The name was catchy. Root liked it. She took another sip, a longer one this time, and seemed content to keep pestering him. "How many planets have you visited. It has to be quite a few, I'm sure."

She had an agenda but small talk had been a dying art form.

"You know," Jim said, "I don't think I'd be able to accurately answer that without going year by year or month by month and that doesn't sound like the kind of storytelling that ought to happen here in the lounge." He grinned and tipped his beer at her.

Root trailed her finger around the rim of her glass. "Fair enough, Jimmy, but I do love a detailed tale. You'll have to tell me sometime."

She tilted her head, her hair falling to one side. "So who do I have to suck up to, to get a look at the guts of your lovely computer system? I'm something of an expert where I come from."

"An expert?" he echoed. "In computer systems. What's your background?" Jim asked. He figured he could always get her in with some of the operations team, if she really wanted to take a look at it. There wouldn't be any harm in that.

"Computer software and hardware," Root explained. "I was very good at finding backdoors and making computer code do my bidding."

She winked, with both eyes. "The last thing I did was help rebuild and restore a complex artificial intelligence after she was nearly destroyed by a malevolent brother. We called her The Machine, and she had a moral code and somewhat of a playful personality at times."

Root tilted her head. "There was a bit of some growing pains though, we had to re-teach her nuance. Shades of gray, rather than a strict definition of good and bad."

After all, everyone agreed murder was bad, even if Root hadn't believed that until the past three years. But what if you had to kill to stop a murder?

He looked at her, impressed, and nodded a few times. "Now I'm sure the Enterprise's computer here isn't quite the same - she might have a personality but not in the way you're thinking - but I'd be more than happy to get you in touch with my chief of operations, if you'd like to take a look."

"I would love</i that, o Captain my Captain." Root's smile could light up the whole lounge. She knew she could make the computer sing once she understood the code. Though any AI experiments would have to be in a room completely detached from any other system.

"Great, then I'll make sure they seek you out and you can make a go of it."

She tossed him a faux salute. "Thank you. Enjoy your evening." Then with a swirl of her hand, she turned, looking around to see if she saw someone else she wanted to talk to.

"You as well," Jim murmured, smiling after her as she turned away and moved on to another conversation.
