Jim & Mary

It took Mary a moment for her to recognize him without his uniform on. In jeans and a leather jacket, he blended in with all of the other off-duty crew members. There was a way that Jim Kirk held himself though. Even while off-duty it was clear that he was in charge.

Mary wasn't a woman who often went to bars. That wasn't to say that she didn't drink, just that bars weren't considered proper for a lady of her status. This bar seemed decidedly casual, much more casual than the dress she was wearing, which she had thought was incredibly casual. Why was everyone wearing laboring clothing like jeans at a social gathering? The dress itself had been a find. The machines called replicators on this ship were truly spectacular things, allowing her to make a dress that reminded her of the ones from home in mere minutes. Mind-blowing.

Many people stopped by to chat with Jim or just to say hello, so Mary held back for a moment, waiting until he was alone to approach him. She saw her opportunity when he was leaning against the bar, drinking a beer out of the bottle. (Not a very gentlemanly pose if one asked her.)

"Captain Kirk," Mary said, her posture straight as she held out her hand to him. "I am Lady Mary Crawley. We spoke on the PADD."

He turned his attention to the woman in front of him, lowering his bottle for a moment to greet her with a smile. "Lady Crawley," Jim said. "It's nice to meet you face to face." He couldn't help but give her a once over. He'd never seen a dress quite like hers before. "I trust you're getting more used to being several hundred years in the future, or at least as used to it as you can in only a few days."

Mary watched his eyes scan her form. She was used to men looking her over, so it didn't bother her in the least, even if he was only looking at her dress. The first thing she noticed about Jim was that his eyes were incredibly blue in person.

"I am, or as well as I can," she conceded. "Do people usually wear workmen's clothing to social events?"

It was a genuine question, not an insult, even though there was surprise in her tone.

Jim glanced around. None of his crew was in uniform, so he wasn't sure what she mesnt, so he just shrugged. "You're probably used to a more formal attire," he said. He had read the stats of all the new arrivals and, if he was remembering correctly, she was from the early part of the 20th century.

"I am," she confirmed, thus why she felt incredibly overdressed. No matter, she would persevere. At least she was comfortable in her clothing.

Mary stood next to him for a moment as a silence hung between them. "Do you mind if I join you?" She wanted to get to know the man who was in charge on this ship. Such a thing could prove useful later.

He glanced around and shrugged, shifting a little to the side and motioning to one of the empty stools near him. "Not at all," he said. He sipped his beer and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "I hope it's not too overwhelming to be out of your time period."

Did he just wipe his mouth with his hand? Mary tried not to look too horrified at how far manners had possibly deteriorated in just a few centuries. She perched on the stool, her posture perfect.

"I'm sure I will adjust quickly enough." It was a nice deflection. While hopefully true, Mary was still frightened of being trapped in this time and place with nobody that she knew. She had cried numerous times in her room, alone with the door locked, where nobody could see her.

She glanced up at the multicolored bottles that lined the shelf behind the bar. "Do you have any drink suggestions?" she asked.

She amused him. In a good way, of course. Jim wasn't sure if he'd ever met someone so proper as Lady Crawley was, except perhaps for Spock, but that wasn't necessarily proper, just logical. And Mary wasn't emotionless. He could tell that just by reading her facial expressions. "Why don't you tell me what your usual drink is and then I'll see if I know of anything similar?" he suggested.

"I like a martini," she said, "or whiskey."

Mary knew that she couldn't entirely hide her fear, even if her poker face was strong. Fortunately, Jim did not seem to be calling her out. She appreciated that. Manners aside, the captain seemed like a good man at least.

He nodded and motioned to the person tending bar. He ordered her a martini, dry, with an olive. "Some things haven't changed much in three hundred years," he said. "Although the olive isn't Terran, so it might taste a little different to you. But it's good. Promise." He winked at her.

The wink earned him a small smile in return. "I shall give it a try at least." Somehow he'd managed to order her drink just how she liked it without even asking her.

She settled a bit on the stool, feeling somewhat more relaxed now. "Where are you from originally, Captain?"

He grinned. "I think you'll enjoy it," he said, taking the glass from the bartender and offering it to her.

Jim was relaxed as well. Then again, he often was when he had a chance to be off duty and have a drink. It was just that, these days, there were so many more people to meet, women to flirt with. "Now that's a complicated question," he said, though he supposed it wasn't actually all that complicated. "I was born in space but I grew up in Iowa, on Earth."

His grin, when he smiled with teeth, had the tendency to change his whole face. It was the same with Mary when she grinned, though it wasn't often that she did it.

She took the drink from him. "In space? On a ship like this, you mean?" Mary took a sip of the drink and nodded her approval. The gin had a pure taste to it. "I have been to America, though not to Iowa."

He watched, satisfied, as she seemed to enjoy the drink. He nodded. "Yes, on a ship like this. My parents were both Starfleet, and I was born on board." He didn't go into the when and where and how though, because there was no need to bring up bad memories of a father he never knew. Though a shadow did pass across his face for a millisecond. "There's not much in Iowa these days except some shipyards and a lot of wide open flat space. I can't imagine it's much different when you're from."

"My mother is originally from Ohio. Cincinnati. We've visited family there several times. The area surrounding the city is quite rural. It did remind me at least a little bit of where I'm from - Yorkshire, England. It isn't quite the same though."

Yorkshire had those green rolling hills and there was just a feeling that you got in the English countryside that one could not get anywhere else. Staring out at the blackness on the other side of the windows, Mary wondered if she'd ever get to see that expanse of green again.

"You know, I've never been to England," Jim said. "I've been all over the galaxy and never managed to get over there. Isn't that funny?" He took another swallow of his beer and grinned over at her. "I hope you'll get used to this place. And you won't be holed up here forever. We'll be making stops. After all, our mission will continue, even with a few extra travelers taken on board."

"Never?" Mary asked with a smile. "The countryside is absolutely beautiful. I hope it remains so, even in this time period. I suppose since there are so many places outside of Earth to visit that it's hard to see everything on Earth."

Mary took another sip of her drink and gazed back at Jim. He seemed kind, like he cared about his crew and was taking on the extra burden of all of the travelers without much of a fuss.

"What exactly is the mission of this ship?"

"I've heard good things," he said with a nod. When she turned her attention to her drink, he took the time to look around, ensure that nothing difficult was going on, no one was getting unruly. It seemed as though everyone was simply having a good time.

"We're on the tail-end of a five year deep space exploratory mission," he explained. "It's been interrupted, however, with these unexpected arrivals, but we're still plugging along."

"So just a general exploration mission? No specific goals in mind?" That seemed kind of odd to her, but she knew nothing about space travel. Maybe this was typical. "I thought people had explored much of the universe by now."

Mary put her glass back down on the bar. Somehow he had managed to select the perfect drink for her. "Have you not been back to Earth in five years?"

"There are always worlds left to explore, especially on the edges of deep space," Jim said. "And it's exploratory but also to seek out new lifeforms and new civilizations, to go where no one has gone before." He echoed the words of the captain's creed as he spoke.

He nodded. "Just about five years, yes. We're sure to be heading back there at some point in the coming months for some much needed shore leave, but I don't know for certain when that'll be."

"Have you found any new lifeforms then?" That seemed kind of exciting, if not a bit scary. How did one know if a species would be friendly, or if it would speak a language that you could understand.

She gazed back up at the window, the vault of stars on the other side of it. Mary leaned in slightly so that she could speak quietly to him, despite the noise of the lounge. "Does it bother you to not... see grass or sky for so long?" Because it had been hardly a week and it already bothered her.

He nodded. "Yes, several. The Enterprise is the fleet's flagship, so we're sent on ahead to negotiate or make first contact or leave beings be, sometimes. It depends on the civilization, in some circumstances." He finished off his beer and motioned for a second one, setting the bottle down on the bar beside him.

Jim tipped his head to the side. "No, it doesn't bother me. I was born to be in space."

"That must be exciting," Mary replied. "You are captain of the flagship of the fleet?" She hoped that she had managed to keep the surprise out of her voice. How did such a young man rise to what had to be an incredibly important position. Seeing him in jeans and a leather jacket, one never would have guessed how important he was.

"Perhaps it simply takes time to get used to," Mary said, though there was a wistful tone to her voice. She never knew that she would take going outside for granted.

Jim nodded. "That's right," he said. He grinned at her again. "It just means more time in space though, which as you're learning, isn't easy for everyone. That's why we schedule stops and shore leave whenever we can."

He seemed so confident. It looked good on him, made him attractive despite the informal clothing.

"Do you know where our first stop will be?" The idea of walking on solid ground again really appealed to Mary.
