After everything she'd been through, Julie thought she should have been better at rolling with the punches than she seemed to be. People who'd been through worse -- Mettle, most recently -- seemed to have their life sorted out better than she did, or at least weren't whining about what they'd been through. What had the whole point of training with the Academy been if she couldn't even keep herself together? Had she learned nothing in nearly ten years of using her powers to fight back and do good deeds? She was supposed to be tougher than that. She'd hoped that two months in an alternate New York would've been enough for her to get settled in and grounded (figuratively, anyway), but something kept popping up. Accidentally hurting Tony Stark, Karolina arriving, losing Brandon, Mettle arriving -- the roller coaster was so exhausting. But that was the thing, she reminded herself, that was just what her life was supposed to be like. One thing after another, one more obstacle to overcome, one more battle to fight. That was the life she'd signed up for in the end, and that was what she'd wanted. She'd put a rubber band around her wrist after that, to remind herself every time she got selfish. She hadn't needed to snap it since then, but the day wasn't over yet. A bigger distraction was headed her way (literally, at that), and it was good to have something else to focus on besides her own problems. Mettle needed his friends, and that she could provide. The crowd outside the building had cleared out a little by the time she'd needed to head downstairs to meet the delivery boy -- temporarily or not, she wasn't sure, but it was a blessing for her sake and the delivery boy's (who she knew hadn't signed up to be hassled by tourists either). Flying up the stairs was faster than waiting for the elevator, even with three large pizzas in hand. The hug would have to wait a few seconds until she put the pizzas down inside the apartment, but she doubted Mettle would mind the delay. |
