The laptop case closed with an unsatisfying click. Veronica thought that it should have made a slam, like the impact of all this had on her not-too-ordinary life. She should be used to this by now, she thought, rubbing her temples for a moment before getting up and throwing on cutoff shorts and a shirt. The day was already hot and oppressive, and that didn't include the ominous feeling of having to tell her now returned to the living best friend about all the things she missed while she was dead. How could she casually mention falling in love with Lilly's ex boyfriend, or Duncan having a daughter and running away with her, or her own rape? That she had become someone entirely different after her death, someone Lilly might not even recognize?
It was easier just to pull the band aid off, wasn't it? Waiting to talk to Lilly would just make it worse. And there was something else-Veronica loved Lilly, more than almost anyone in the world. She was the sister she never had, and she had brought Veronica out of her shell even if she hadn't really stayed the same. She owed so much to Lilly, and she missed her, even more now that she'd been back in her life. And then there was Sam. When Lilly was here last, she didn't really connect much with Sam, which she was sure was owed as much to her being so wrapped up in him and neglecting their roommate relationship. Now that Veronica lived outside the tower, she wasn't sure how that would impact it, but she knew that whatever happened, she wanted Lilly to see how important Sam was to her. Sam was a part of her life that was the one shining good thing in all the muck that had come and gone. He'd been there for her, had seen the ugliness that she had to live with, and the demons she kept at bay, and had loved her still. Deep down, she knew Lilly could see that too, even if Veronica was the oldest one, now.
She met Sam at the entrance of the tower and took his big hand in her smaller one. She squeezed it and gave him a nervous smile. "She's here, Sam. And now I'll get to see her again." Before she even knew it, they were outside Lilly's door, and unexpected nerves fluttered in her stomach as she knocked on the door and waited for her best friend to answer. Nope, not weird in the slightest.
