I understand that I don't have the touchstones (in this world) to recognise or respond to potential threats in the way that some of the residents of this tower -- particularly if these residents have 'super powers' and are accustomed to battling overblown rhetoric and violent imagery with any regularity -- but I do know a terrorist when I see one. I do understand what it means to be a connoisseur of fear and to have such self-aggrandised delusions regarding oneself that they overtake all of the airwaves ...

But -- hear me out, here.

There is a point. As much as I rail against being called a lamb, there is a purpose to making this society think on its sins. I would hazard to say that this person will get there eventually. I hope it's sooner rather than later.

Still and yet. We've every reason to listen.

Perhaps.

The name seems familiar but I cannot place it. Was he a man like this?

He's the kind of man that this guy wants to be. Did Tony show you how to use Wikipedia?

Um yes and no. He mentioned it and I used the google to get to it but I have to admit I find it more difficult to navigate than the kind that is flipped through.

Click on this link: http://www.wikipedia.org

Do you see the little rectangular box with the magnifying glass and the word "English?"

I feel incredibly foolish, thank you. There is a lot written about this man, he must have been very powerful.

You shouldn't. You should have seen me try to operate a color television twenty years ago. You've heard of Rip van Winkle? I had the distinction of sleeping for almost fifty years. I've been awake for about twenty years now, but there was a pretty big adjustment period in those first few months.

He was. He conquered more of the world in his lifetime than any individual before or since. This terrorist would very much like to follow in his footsteps, but he won't get nearly as far.

You must have been very young, or perhaps you age more like those where I come from. I can imagine what it was like - adjusting to this life in the Upworld is confusing. There is too much information, about everything, all the time, and all of it seems important and urgent. Things were very different where I am from.

I have learned, though, that this world has seven billion people in it. That is too many to conquer.

I age very slowly, thanks to the administration of a serum whose formula has since been lost. I'll be 91 next month. Are things slower-paced where you're from?

You make a very good point. There were far fewer people in the world when he conquered some of it. Perhaps 450 million.

Ninety one, very impressive. So you took a potion to live longer? Things are not slower or faster, just different. Some people do not show much sign of age until they are dead. Some keep their souls in a secret place to keep death away. In some places, though, where time has overflowed from Upworld, men have lived for hundreds of years without knowing it.

I think we may be optimistic then.

I took a potion to become stronger. I was very weak and ill, and I needed to be strong so I could fight against another powerful man. That sounds like a very wondrous world.

We also have the benefit of a number of individuals who have experience with exactly this kind of man. Whose collective power vastly outweighs his.

You must be very good, Steve. Often when the weak become suddenly powerful they don't use that power to help others. I wouldn't call my home wondrous, but I would call Upworld straightforward. Well, I would have. This place is like the Upside but not very straightforward. Time does seem to march on, though.

I hope that is true. He had the air of a man with power and I admit that it frightens me.
