Severus Snape is not amused ([info]severusnape) wrote in [info]the_recruitment,

Who: Remus, Sirius, Severus
What: Severus is going to use his mad Legilimency and Occlumency skills to put Sirius back to sorts the wanker
Where: Gryffindor Tower, 6th year boys' dorm
When: 6th March, around curfew
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG, perhaps higher

It's a thief in the night to come and grab you
It can creep up inside you and consume you
A disease of the mind, it can control you

After he had agreed to meet up with Lupin, Severus found himself taking the stairs a little slower than he might usually. He wasn't quite looking forward to what was to come, but he knew that he had something over Black now, something that was so powerful it would guarantee that the other boy would leave him alone for a long time to come, perhaps even until graduation. A small part of him genuinely felt guilty about his treatment toward Lupin, so he'd wanted to help, but the bigger part just wanted to do this for the knowledge and power that he would gain. Severus had to constantly remind himself that it wasn't because he wanted to help one of his greatest enemies, but that it was for the good of his own development as a wizard and for the pursuit of his skills. He wasn't completely heartless, though.

The castle was chilly and quiet that evening, this close to curfew. Only a few stray students were about, and luckily, none of them wanted to cross paths with the Slytherin. He made his way to Gryffindor Tower with the slinking litheness of a stalking panther, pressing himself close to the walls and practically blending in with the darkness. If anyone were to see him going in that direction, they might think him mad. He hadn't traversed this particular path since that apology to Lily... but for Salazar's sake, he needed to clear his mind of distractions. With a concentrated effort, he wiped all thoughts except for those necessary for this task tonight. It was fairly easy to do so after so many years of practice.

Dark eyes swept the corridor containing the Fat Lady's portrait, but he made a grave effort to avoid her at all costs. At a darkened alcove near enough to Gryffindor's entrance, he leaned against the wall and waited for Lupin to meet him.

Remus wasn't particularly looking forward to any part of this whole plan, except for the part where Sirius received help that no one else was able to provide. He didn't like going behind James' and Peter's backs to do it, but he had no other option. They'd run out of time, Sirius had nearly died before, and Remus wasn't going to take anymore chances. Especially with the Full coming up. James could be angry with him all he wanted if it meant this worked for Sirius. In the end, Sirius' well being would always come first. That didn't mean he felt good with his decision, or that he even trusted Severus. But he'd made the others think that he did, and that had to be good enough for now. Severus was the only person who even thought they could help Sirius. Remus didn't care what his motives were, he just needed him to do what he said he could, and they'd go from there. Holding it over Sirius for years to come didn't seem like a big deal if it meant Sirius still had those years to live.

After closing his journal when he sent Severus an urgent request to come to Gryffindor Tower, he stood up from the plush couch in the Common Room and wen to the portrait hole. He felt uneasy, scared for Sirius, and unsure of whether or not this was a good idea, but the bottom line was, Sirius needed help. Remus took a deep breath, then pushed the portrait open. He glanced out, and saw Severus leaning against the wall near the entrance way. "Thank you," he said, relieved to see him -- never thought he'd live to see the day he was relieved to see Severus Snape. "He's up in the room. I'll take you there."

When he heard the portrait opening up along with the undeniable sound of someone else within the vicinity, Severus looked over and nodded to Remus, not bothering with unnecessary pleasantries. He merely stalked over to the portrait hole and curiously glanced past the Gryffindor inside, wondering if anyone else was about.

"Let's get on with it, then. I would like to spend as little time as possible inside that room, if you don't mind." Severus managed to withhold the sneer that he wanted to punctuate his sentence with, if only barely. A hand reached instinctively for the wand tucked within his robes just in case anything became amiss about this whole affair.

Remus felt that was something they could both agree on. He didn't want Severus there any longer than he absolutely needed to be. But at the same time, he didn't want the Slytherin to rush through whatever it was he needed to do in order to help Sirius. He wanted it to be thorough, and done properly -- whatever it was. He still hadn't gotten any answers, and he still wasn't sure if he was okay with that, but he didn't really have much of a choice. Sirius couldn't carry on this way, and he didn't have any answers that wouldn't land Sirius in the psych ward at St. Mungo's. Remus wouldn't even entertain the thought that maybe that's where he ought to be right now. That wasn't an option.

"Right, then," he said, and nodded. Fortunately the common room was empty, which was a bit of luck. No one was around to ask any questions as to why Severus Snape would be heading up into the dorm room belonging to the four boys he normally wanted absolutely nothing to do with. Remus wasn't in the mood to answer questions anyway, so it was just as well. He gestured for Snape to follow him, and took him up the stairs of Gryffindor Tower to that led to the dorm rooms. He paused outside the door, and looked back at Snape. "He doesn't know it's you. He just knows he wants to do whatever it takes to fix what's wrong with him." He just wanted Snape to know that he probably wouldn't be receiving the most welcoming greeting, though he was smart enough to have deduced that under any circumstances or pretenses this wouldn't be the most pleasant of meetings.

That said, he pushed open the door and walked inside. "Sirius," he called out quietly. "We're.. here."

Grudgingly, Severus followed Lupin through the common room, dark gaze taking in every feature of the place and storing it all away in his memory. It was much brighter than Slytherin's common room, and a lot more cozy, yet at the same time, it had this messy air to it that Slytherin did not. Severus decided that he rather preferred the dark and cleanliness of Slytherin, with very little bias influencing his thoughts in that regard. And besides that, the colour scheme wasn't doing anything for his stomach, which was already starting to clench into a small knot of anticipation. As much as he'd wanted to hold this over that idiot Black, he started to wonder if helping his biggest enemy [aside from that spectacled git] was the right move.

However, the decision was already made when they made it up to the dorm room, and Severus used Lupin as a shield for as long as possible before he had to stop into the room. Peering around, he spotted his target and narrowed his eyes, wondering what would cause him to be tied up to the bed like he was. With a questioning glance to Lupin, he then looked back to Black with a cautious yet steady gaze, and asked, "What did he do, try to beat some sense into himself? Honestly, you might have wanted to let him continue."

It didn't hold the heat of his usual snarled insults, more like a neutral sort of interest in the situation. Perhaps this would be beneficial after all, he thought privately, stepping just a bit closer to Black. At least he couldn't physically fight him on it.

Sirius was nearly done. He'd been fighting with... Whoever was inside him all morning. The 'Other Sirius' had been in control for a good portion of the last few hours, but he'd wrestled himself back and tied himself to the bed, not wanting to be loose if He came back. Now he was just waiting for Remus, desperatly hoping that whatever the Werewolf was planning would work, he didn't think he's survive another round with the Other.

He looked up as Remus entered the room, then fliched back when Snape followed him. What the fuck was he doing here? He was just about to launch as scathing comment at the Slytherins head when what little sense he still had kicked in.

Remus brought him, he's here to help.

"So, you huh?" He wanted to sound cocky, confident, and unconcerened, but all he really sounded was tired and drained. "Okay. What do we have to do?"

It almost scared him to see Sirius so resolved to the idea of Snape helping him. Ordinarily he likely would have protested to the point of cursing and yelling, or just outright refusing. But he'd barely even given a response. Remus knew this was their last chance before he'd have to get someone like Dumbledore involved.

He wished he could be the one to give Sirius an answer, but he didn't have any. Those would have to come from Snape. So all he could do was smile reassuringly at Sirius and sit next to him on the bed, then turn back to the Slytherin for answers.

Severus looked thoughtfully between the two of them for a moment, not deigning to give Black a response as his mind made a few preparations for the task. He tightly closed off his own thoughts while he searched the room for any sort of chair. Spotting one in the far corner, he withdrew his wand and Accioed it over, catching it when it zoomed closer. Wordlessly, he sat beside the bed and leaned forward, fighting the urge to grimace at the breaking distance between himself and Black.

Low and serious, he kept his wand out just in case. "I'm sure I will despise this just as much as you, but your friend here has been so kind as to let me proceed." Dark eyes shot a tight look at Remus before returning to bore into Sirius.

"In order for this to work, you need to keep your eyes on me. No stupid comments and we can finish this up that much faster."

"What... What are you going to do?" he pulled back slightly, then squared his jaw and moved forward again.

"You know what, it doesn't matter." He fixed his eyes on Severus, barely even blinking. "Just do what you have to do, I won't say a word.

His eyes flicked quickly to Remus, wishing the other boy could be sitting with him, then fixed his gaze on Severus. He would do anything, even trust his worst enemy, if it made this go away.

But he isn't your worst enemy anymore, is he? You have so many more people to be scared of Black.

Remus wanted to be able to hold his hand and reassure him that everything would be all right, but he felt he had to keep his distance. Severus indicated he needed quiet and to focus, so he just stayed there, close enough for Sirius to be able to sense his presence but that was it.

If this didn't work, he wasn't sure he'd be able to keep it together anymore. Remus had been trying to be brave all this time, but he was growing weaker. With the Full approaching, he felt even less together, and he was afraid of how that would affect his resolve. He was afraid of how that would affect Sirius. For now, he had to put all his hope and faith in this working. Otherwise, he didn't know what he was going to do.

Leaning down a bit more, Severus tucked away his wand, feeling confident in his ability to do this wandlessly after so many years of practice on the unsuspecting, although he wasn't yet practised enough to manipulate the spell without speaking.

"Legilimens," he murmured, sable locked onto Sirius Black's grey as he delved into the other's mind and mingled through the memories. There were so many layers to his mind that Severus found himself slightly taken aback. Most of his target practice came in the form of particularly daft fellow students or those much younger than he, so he wasn't altogether prepared for the rush of better developed thoughts that hit him. If questioned, he would vehemently deny that Sirius Black had any more mental prowess than a constipated Blast-Ended Skrewt.

Thinking that he had managed to pull apart the irrelevant memories and thoughts about Black's day-to-day activities, he came upon a memory of him lying on a red sofa with... Lupin hovering close, offering calming words and meaningful looks. Another memory of the two of them holding hands and talking casually. Severus forced himself away from that part of Black's mind and ploughed onward, searching for any clues as to the other boy's odd behaviour.

A flash of blond and the scene unfolded into a misty representation of what Black must have thought was a secret tryst. Severus almost felt embarrassed for the git when he uttered the wrong name and — that's when things turned violent. He could barely pull himself away, could feel himself tensing at the effort, when his mind's eye turned to see Rodolphus Lestrange emerging from a cabinet and then they were gone, pulled away to someplace that looked like it ought to be familiar. The superimposed flash of a black statue hovered ominously over everything else for a moment, blocking out the rest of the memory and he knew that this was it. Severus latched onto it without remorse, attacking it with his mind and years of memorised hexes that would translate into a usable weapon here in the midst of someone's thoughts. The bombarded statue seemed to give way, losing its wicked black colouring and fading into a dull grey, pushed aside and revealing the memory that it had concealed.

Before he could suck in his breath, he saw a flash of cold, elongated pupils boring right back into him, as though they could see through his soul.

It was almost like flying, soaring through a vortex of his own memories. Things he hadn't thought of in years, places he didn't remember being too, people he's forgotten, all streamed by along with mundane and the everyday.

When they stopped at the memories of him and Remus Sirius couldn't help but cringe. He didn't want Snape to know anything about that. He was glad when they moved on quickly.

He knew what was coming as they settled on the memory of the Valentines Ball. He remembered most of what happened, but this was different. This was seeing it, in stark black and white, and he cringed away from it, his body whimpering involuntarily. He didn't want to remember this. Then Lestrange was there, and they were taking him somewhere, and then there was darkness. Nothing. Sirius was floating, completely unanchered. He struggled trying to find Snape, when something exploded, shards of black ripping through the darkness.

He was in a little room, mostly naked, tied to a chair. A man was looming over him, a man with a snakes face and red, terrifying eyes. He pushed harder, wanting to see everything, to know what this man had done...

PAIN, white hot and searing, struck him like an arrow between the eyes. He began to scream, body bucking off the bed, muscles taunt and quivvering. He could hear malicious, evil laughter echoing in his mind, and a word, a name, the only thing he'd brought with him from that dark place...

"VOLDEMORT!" Sirius screamed, vocal chords tearing with the force of it, before passing out cold.

Having to just sit there and do nothing was without question the hardest thing Remus had ever done. As soon as he heard the incantation Severus used, he knew what was going on. Legilimency. It was such an invasive form of magic. Ingenious, really, and Remus had no idea Severus had reached such an advanced level of magic. It surprised him, and it scared the hell out of him too.

More than anything, he wished he could trade places with Sirius and be the one who was going through so much hell. He would've given anything to be able to take away the pain and suffering he'd endured. As it was, all he could do was sit there while Severus hopefully was able to reach him and solve the problem.

When Sirius started screaming, Remus' eyes widened and it took every ounce of willpower he had not to move closer and shout at Severus to stop. He had to get rid of whatever it was in him that was causing all this suffering and strife. Remus clutched at the fabric of his trousers so tightly, his knuckles had turned white. The name Sirius shouted filled Remus with dread and fear. Voldemort? He thought. He looked on with worried eyes, both afraid for Sirius and Severus at this point.

Severus forced himself to push away Black's thoughts, clamping down hard on his own mind to protect it from the piercing gaze and the pummelling of memories and thoughts that came crashing all around him. He finally managed to pull out of the Gryffindor's mind and he leaned back in the chair, panting heavily from the exertion. He'd never had an experience like that, nor did he expect to see the victim of those hard memories awake after that ordeal. As he'd suspected, Sirius was completely knackered out.

Shooting a look at Lupin, he watched the worry that stiffened him and Severus felt his eyebrows lowering in remembrance. The two of them? Together? The surprise in his mind was shaken away as he stood abruptly, snatching up his wand and looking back down at Black with a slightly different sort of gaze. He would rather die than admit to anyone that he was developing a sliver of respect for the boy who hadn't completely buckled under those darker memories. It was clear that the statue was placed for a reason, and the involvement of Lucius and Rodolphus... he practically snarled when he noted that the latter was now connected to two victims: Black and Lily. Severus let his mind slowly open up to his musings as the mental walls started to come down.

"Lupin, I found what I was looking for," he said quite perfunctorily, standing before the other boy in a stiff sort of stance. He was still trying to get a hold of himself after that last memory. "Make sure that he doesn't pass by the statue of the rearing centaur just outside of this common room. It was some sort of a... a plant, likely what was causing his behaviour."

Severus glanced back down at Sirius and shook his head before returning the chair to its place and heading toward the door of the dorm. "If I didn't know any better, I would swear that those Death Eaters are involved." With that cryptic comment, he steeled himself to have a good talking to Lucius. Before he turned to go, however, he gave Lupin a cocky look. "Does Potter know about you two? The werewolf and the giant dog. Quite a pair."

Not wishing to get into any further discussions on the matter after that, Severus headed back down the stairs and out of the Gryffindor common room, hoping to get back to Slytherin territories before the red and gold became imprinted on his retinas.

The whole thing was horrifying and heartbreaking. Having to sit and watch Sirius go through so much pain nearly destroyed what was left of Remus' heart. How could someone inflict such cruelty upon another person and induce such suffering? He knew what Severus was doing would get to the root of the problem, but he feared for Sirius whenever it came to the surface. There were tears prickling his eyes, but he managed to swallow them back, just as he'd been doing for days, weeks. This had to be about Sirius, not him. He promised Sirius he would be there for him, to see this through and never give up. Gryffindor courage was all he had left to rely on.

His eyes were still on Sirius' limp body when Severus indicated he'd finished what he came to do. It brought him out of his thoughts, but he had hundreds of questions. A statue was triggering those outbursts? How was he supposed to get Sirius around it without passing it? What was it? Was it enchanted? Could they break whatever curse was put upon it? Or destroy the statue? What was going to happen to Sirius now? So many questions, and no answers. Before he could even speak, Severus was making a snide comment about his relationship with Sirius; apparently he'd seen that too. That was of little consequence to him at the moment.

There was temptation for him to follow Severus, but he was already taking to the stairs. Remus followed him to the door of the dorm room, but stopped there. He couldn't leave Sirius. He had to be with him when he woke up. ...And it would probably be best if Severus was gone. If James came back, all hell would break loose. It was going to be bad enough anyway whenever he told him about what he did.

Sirius. He had to focus on Sirius. Communication with Severus could continue over journals.

For now, he went back to Sirius' bed and started to undo the bindings keeping him tied down. He didn't want him to be restrained when he woke up.

Sirius woke slowly, like surfacing from a deep, shallow lake.

Hearing came first; it was quiet, but someone nearby was breathing

Sensation next; he felt terrible, wrung out and achy like he'd been sick for weeks, and he had a pounding headache right between his eyes, but something was... different. He felt lighter, like a weight he hadn't even realized he'd been carrying had suddenly been removed. He felt like he could finally breathe.

He opened his eyes, cringing against even the dim lighting, then turned his head to look for Remus. There had never been a question about whether or not he would be there.

"Moony?" His voice sounded raw, but the despair that had been tinging it was gone.

Remus worked as quickly as he could to get the bindings off. He didn't want anything holding Sirius down; though, perhaps that was a bit reckless. Something could have still had a hold over him when he awakened. Snape hadn't seemed to think so, but how could he know? No, Sirius didn't need to feel like a prisoner anymore, either in his own mind or his bed.

He'd just gotten the last of them off when he felt a slight shift on the bed. Sirius was waking. Remus moved quickly up near the head of the bed so that he would be close when Sirius came to. "Hey," he said softly, and smiled at him. He looked a little more like himself. Maybe that was a sign, and not just wishful thinking. "Here." He reached over to the bedside table and filled a glass with water he'd kept in case Sirius needed it. "Slow sips," he instructed as he held it to the other boy's lips.

Sirius drank gratefully, the cool water soothing his ragged throat. He was tired, but compared to the soul killing weariness he'd been feeling the last few days this was nothing. For the first time in a long while he thought sleep he could sleep, and maybe wake up feeling normal again.

"I think," he reached out a shaky hand and let it rest of Remus' knee. "I think he, I think he might have fixed me." he tried on a crooked smile, liking the way it seemed to fit his face again. "Something, some darkness, it's gone. I feel, well, like Hell, but, but better. I feel like, like me."

Merlin, it was such a relief. He hadn't even known how ever present "Other Sirius" had been till now, when he was finally alone in his mind. He still couldn't remember anything he had done, but somehow it mattered less. He didn't ever need to know, as long as it wasn't going to happen again.

Remus looked down at the hand on his knee. Somehow, he could just tell. The evil that had taken hold of Sirius wasn't there. It wasn't in his touch. Nothing felt off. Remus didn't know enough to know if this was over with for good, or just temporary until he had to pass by the statue again; he'd ask Snape to be sure. But for now, it seemed okay.

He could breathe again.

He took in a shaky breath and looked at him directly. That smile, that Padfoot smile, did him in. Two of the tears he'd been so stubbornly holding back for weeks, spilled down his cheeks and he quickly rubbed his eyes to keep the rest at bay. "I'm so happy to hear it," he said, hoping his voice didn't betray him. He placed a hand over the one resting on his knee and gave a gentle squeeze. "It's good to see you again, Padfoot."

Someone else might never have noticed the tears, but Sirius had made watching Remus an art form. He knew all the signs, and he didn't miss them. He pushed himself up with only minor difficulty and wrapped Remus in his arms.

"It's going to be alright now." He held on as tightly as he could, wanting Remus to know he was there, to know he could cry if he needed to. Merlin knew Sirius had done enough crying in the last few weeks. "I swear, everything is going to be better."

Remus started to protest when Sirius raised up, not wanting him to have to move too much too fast. Before he could, Sirius' arms were around him, and Remus couldn't fight that. He'd needed to feel that strength and assurance for weeks, just to know that Sirius was okay.

His own arms slid around Sirius and he closed his eyes. He didn't hold him quite so tightly, afraid he might hurt him after all his body had gone through. "You don't know how much it means to hear you say that," he said, quietly, with his face hidden in the crook of Sirius' neck. "Just knowing you believe that means everything to me."

This was good, right. With everything that had been going on they hadn't had a chance to just be together, not had he since Hogsmede, and that had ended so horribly...

Don't think of that now, just enjoy this. You're together, that's all that matters

He had so many questions, so many things he needed to know. Who was Voldemort? What exactly had he done, and why? Who else was in on it, besides Lucius and Rodolphus. What else were the planning, and why take Lily? That had to be involved somehow...

He pushed the thoughts away. He was exhausted, and everything was still so fresh. He could almost smell Lucius on him again, and that last vision, those eyes, that face... No. He didn't want to think about it. He'd go over everything in detail with Remus, James and Peter later. For now he just wanted to hold Moony till they fell asleep.

"We'll get to the bottom of this," he promised, rubbing his hands along Remus' back. "For now, let's just not worry anymore, yeah? I'm okay, I'm here, and we're together."

There were still so many pieces of the puzzle that had to be put into place, but thanks to Snape they'd put together a very vital portion of it. It was a start, anyway, and would hopefully lead them in the right direction to gathering all the other pieces. Time would tell, but Remus felt that now they had a little more time to do so.

Sirius' words truly did soothe him. Remus needed that, and needed him. He brushed his fingertips over the other boy's back and slowly lifted his head. "There is one thing Snape said," Remus went on to say, looking at Sirius in the eyes. "The rearing centaur statue outside of the common room. Stay away from it. Don't walk past it. It's a trigger for what happened too you. Promise me, Sirius, that you won't go near it until we can figure out if it's possible to destroy it or somehow remove it from the castle."

Sirius struggled back a little, needing to be able to see Remus' face.

"A statue? What?" He tried to remember, and yes, he did recall seeing it right before he changed that first time, when he was walking with Lily. And now that he thought about it, every time he'd passed it the Other had seemed to get stronger.

"Shit," he rubbed a hand over his face. "If I'd known that... But it's right outside the tower, I'm going to have to leave the dorm by broom for a while. But we'll destroy it, yeah?"
