Sirius got out of bed at 10:45. He didn't bother looking at the boys in the other bed, didn't put on his cloak or shoes, but did take the time to snatch his wand off the nightstand and tuck it into the stretchy waistband of his bludger pyjama pants.

He wasn't asleep, there was no mistaking the glint of his dark, hooded eyes. He wasn't asleep, but it was clear that he wasn't fully aware either. His movement were slightly stilted, as if someone else were standing above him pulling the strings. He walked haltingly over to the door and wrenched it open, somehow managing to not slam it despite the fact the he obviously wasn't trying to be quiet.

He took the stairs two at a time, almost sliding from one step to another. He stopped at the bottom, staring straight ahead, before striding briskly across the common room and out the portrait hole.

It wasn't late yet, but James had already settled into bed, hoping to rest his weary eyes for a bit. No such thing would be happening tonight, it seemed, as he heard some minor rustling noises. James poked his head through his curtains, blearily watching as Sirius moved about the dorm room. Brows lowered in question, but he didn't say a word, merely watched Sirius leave with odd movements.

Soon as his friend was out the door, James shot up to his feet and tugged on a longer pair of pants over his sleeping ones. The invisibility cloak was dug out of his trunk and his wand was tossed over it. He'd have to hurry up if he didn't want to lose Sirius — until he realised.

"...the Map!" It wasn't shouted, but it wasn't very quiet either. Cursing himself, he figured that he should tell his mates anyway. James went to Peter's and Remus's four posters respectively. It wasn't that late, so maybe they weren't asleep. He let that thought follow him as he impatiently got their attention in any way that he could.

"C'mon you prats, Sirius is on the move!" he'd hissed, blurry vision not helping matters any while he prodded about at his mates.

Remus attempted to stay awake, but he'd dozed off while reading. His book lay across his chest, his head propped up on the headboard but tilted slightly as he'd slipped off into a light slumber. He'd stirred a little when Sirius woke up but it hadn't been enough to rouse him. It was James' voice and the sound of him hurrying around the room that pulled Remus back into consciousness.

He sat up and opened his curtains. Realization struck him then of what this meant. Sirius was wandering off as he'd claimed to have done before. Mixed feelings stirred within him; if he'd slept in Sirius' bed he might've been able to coax him back to sleep, but by not doing so they could at least follow him and try to figure out what was going on. He wasn't sure that either action set well with him, so he just got up and put on his shoes and fished out a jumper to throw on over his pajamas. "Let's be off, then."

Peter had already been awake and slipping out of his bed when James bolted upright, and he had sat upright at the sound of footsteps, the dormitory door having shut just moments before.

Sliding out of bed, Peter snatched up the jumped he had deliberately left out that night and tugged it on, snatching his wand from his bedside cabinet and a rolled up scroll of parchment. "I've got to let Lily know," He said, words directed to James.

"I just need to get this to her, and then I'll join up with you two--Alright?"

It was resignation that had left Peter so sure of what they planned to do tonight.

James gave Peter an odd look but quickly brushed it off as he turned to Remus, slapping him on the back while smiling encouragingly.

"We've got this mate, let's go." James turned back to his bed and snagged up the cloak and his wand before digging up the Marauder's Map. Ignoring the fact that his upper body was quite naked and that his glasses sat abandoned on the bedside table, he ambled his way toward the door of the dorm and opened it slowly. He was listening for footsteps or noise in the common room.

Not hearing anything out of the ordinary, he turned back to his friends in the dorm and gave the thumbs up, grinning a little too excitedly before tossing the Map in Remus's direction and half-enshrouding himself in his cloak, awaiting his friend to join him under it.

Remus' eyes bugged a bit at the slap to the back, but he quickly composed himself and straightened out his jumper. Secretly, he hoped that Sirius' departure was just a quick trip down to the kitchens to find something sweet. Deep down, he knew it wasn't going to be that simple, but he still had to hold onto that hope.

He nodded to James, and caught the Map. He wasn't as excited about the whole thing, rather, he was very anxious about it. But he slipped beneath the cloak next to James. "Ready," he said, though it was only half true. He wanted to help Sirius, to find out what it was that was happening to him, but he was also very afraid to know the truth.

Peter slipped out after putting his shoes on, however he went a different direction then the other two. He headed to where he kept his pet eagle owl. This whole matter left a worrying not in the pit of Peter's stomach, something that caused his brows to draw down in a furrow, teeth digging into his lower lip.

James had seemed almost exited about this, Remus grim. No doubt Lily would be quite cautious; after all, none of them had any idea how Sirius might react if he caught them following him. He had been acting too strangely as of late for them to predict his mood.

Once in the Owlery, Peter waved his owl down and quickly attached the small note to his leg, watching as he took off through the large opening in the wall and swooped around the castle.

Glancing briefly down at the grounds and the few lights that that were still on, Peter gave a low sigh. Turning away, he left the room and began to head down, just as he told Lily he would.

It was never too difficult to locate James, and since Remus was with him, Peter could only expect to reunite soon enough.

Lily was still up, a charm up around her four poster bed as she continued to work on a Potion's essay. She had already passed the length mark and was working on a couple more inches. There was something about the subject that always fascinated her and she could never stop at the minimum.

Needless to say she was a little surprised when the eagle owl flew through her curtains and she let out a little yelp, covering her mouth as soon as she did. Her heart was thumping as she unrolled the parchment and read the note. This was it! She practically jumped out of bed, trying her best not to wake her mates. She pulled on some jeans and a sweatshirt, before sticking her wand in her back pocket. She quietly slipped out the door and headed down the stairs, her tennis making little noise.

She was out of the common room, trying to remember where she said she would meet Peter. Her feet took her towards the Great Hall and she kept her wand at her side, slipping between the shadows. When she got closer to the entrance, she saw him standing there and hurried over.

"Hey," she whispered, giving him a small smile. "Where are the others?"

Peter started at the sound of footsteps, and turned abruptly to face Lily, his surprised expression shifting into something more like a taunt smile. He gave a slight wave as way of greeting. "Somewhere around here, I think...we broke up so I could send you the note..."

He indicated for her to follow him and snuck closer to the doors that led to the grounds and carefully pried them open, peeking outside. "James and Remus are under the cloak," He said, not really thinking that Lily might have no idea what he was referring to.

"They could be anywhere really. Do you see Sirius anywhere?"

Except for the slight patches of light, the grounds were relatively black.

"Under a cloak?" she asked, wondering what good that would do. Well, it they were under something dark there was a good probability that they wouldn't be seen.

She looked out with Peter, her eyes scanning the grounds. "I don't thin - Oh wait, there!" She pointed towards the Forbidden Forest, a movement catching her eye. "Is that him there?" She looked around and took a step outside, squinting to try and see better. It was a good distance away so it was hard to really see. But really, who else would be out this time of night and by the forest?

"I think we should go check it out," she said, glancing back at Peter.

"Uh huh..." For once, Peter was being absentminded, rather then paying great deals of attention to how he was behaving, or just what was being said. Under a cloak that was simple enough to understand. After all, it did make the wearer invisible.

At Lily's exclamation, Peter flinched, the slightest movement, and pulled his eyes from the spot he was scrutinizing, to where she pointed. It was someone. Who he could not be sure, yet it made no sense to just ignore it!

"Y--yeah, we should..." Carefully, he eased the door open wider and slipped out, waiting for Lily to come along, all the while watching the person drawing ever closer to the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

Sirius...

What was he doing?

Rabbits made such satisfying sounds. First there's the high pitched squeal as they're snatched off the ground, dangling by their soft ears. Then there's the slippery tearing and desperate screaming as the skin is slowly and methodically removed. The screaming stops when their vocal chords are severed, but nothing is more satisfying than the sharp snick of a breaking breast bone.

Sirius smiled vacantly as he fit his fingers into the rabbits sternum and peeled its ribs back, flaring them out beside the body like tiny, bloody wings. He could see the still beating heart fluttering madly, like a moth in a cage. He reached in and plucked it out, raising it too his lips and crushing it between his teeth. A small trickle of blood ran down his chin as he watched the rabits movements finally still.

James had guided them slowly through the portrait, letting Remus catch up with each movement, and down the corridors. They didn't really need the Map just yet, since he could hear the steps of his friend, but just in case, it would prove useful in case they were to lose him, as well as to track any stray Professors or Prefects. He sniggered to himself when he pointedly noted that he had one of the Prefects right next to him, but then he silenced himself and glanced over, whispering to his friend.

"Moony, whatever we happen to see, just don't... well don't go loopy or anything. It probably won't be anything though. Nothing too bad, I reckon..." James attempted to infused his words with confidence and fell only slightly short. He still wasn't quite sure what was going on between his two friends, and frankly, it didn't really matter right now. He'd eventually pry enough to get more information after they'd dealt with Sirius's strange behaviour. Just a little ways more and they'd be practically on their friend's heels.

Remus followed along behind James, trying to mimic his motions and stride so as not to lag behind or slip out from under the cloak. He didn't really want to think about what they were going to find when they got to Sirius, but worry had most definitely begun to creep in on his psyche. He was a worrier by nature, and did not share in James' confidence. That didn't stop him from frowning at his friend's words, though.

"I'm not loopy," he said quickly. He was level-headed almost to the point of being insufferable. ...Except when it came to Sirius. James was right, and he knew that, but he didn't really want to admit to it right now. He just wanted to find Sirius and bring him back to the dorm before--

They were coming upon him, and Remus could hear the sounds of the rabbit in its dying moments. "Is.. that.. Wh.. What is he doing?" Perhaps he was going a little bit loopy. "James..." He'd defer to his 'leader,' as James was in all of their schemes. But he really just wanted to run out from under the cloak and get him. Instinct was trying to take over and propel him forward, but he didn't move just yet.

James merely shook his head at Remus, trying not to be too antagonistic. He'd let the silence enshroud them as they followed their friend, but as soon as they'd come up behind him and heard, saw, what Sirius was doing, he found himself completely in tune with Remus's emotions on the matter.

"I reckon I might've misjudged the situation a bit..." James felt himself tense at the gruesome sight. Trying to find any excuse to look away, he fumbled for his wand for a few seconds while tersely whispering to let his friend know what he was doing.

"I'm going to stun him, and you grab him, yeah? Maybe we could knock him back to his senses after that. If Pete ever catches up, let's not let him see that rabbit. Y'know how squirmy he is." Truth be told, James wasn't having an easy time of it either. He forced himself to face Remus with a confident smile, letting him know that he was fully focused and still here. It wouldn't do for the mighty James Potter to show weakness now.

Remus didn't like the idea of stunning him, but he truly couldn't think of anything else to do. At least that way they could get him away from ..whatever it was he was doing. He also agreed with James' idea to not let Peter witness any of what they were seeing. It was hard enough as it was; he didn't need to see that.

"You stun him, I'll get him. But where are we taking him?" He asked. Taking a stunned Sirius back into the castle seemed risky. They couldn't fit his rigid body under the cloak, could they? They could avoid people with the map, he supposed, but it was still a risk. They had to act fast, before Sirius was on the move again. "Suppose we could figure that out after you stun him. Do it."

It took a little longer for Peter to make it to the forests edge. Their was curfew to think about and the last thing Peter wanted at the moment was to be caught by one of the Professors.

So he stayed out of the direct view of the over head windows, making sure that Lily was close every other second. A strange sound had began to come out of the dense forest, a muffled noise that Peter could not quite make out...

The very ideas that sprung to mind made his stomach churn. He hoped it was just one of the many rumored creatures, not his mate.

Stepping inside of the woods, Peter stilled, giving Lily a nervous glance. It sounded closer, just like the whispered words that seemed to come from nowhere. Remus and James underneath the cloak maybe?

He gave Lily a nervous glance, holding his wand more tightly. "Come on, I think they're here somewhere."

With a shrug, James turned from his friend and stared at Sirius for a minute longer, disgusted and equally mesmerised by the scene unfolding before them. It certainly didn't sound like Sirius, but to see the familiar features doing such awful things...

Something in James hardened and he quickly ducked out from under the cloak, pointing his wand at Sirius and swiftly uttering the stunning spell. He didn't even think before he leaned forward to check on Sirius with one hand while tucking his wand into his trousers pocket with the other before vigorously waving Remus over.

"Come on, let's just get him under the cloak for now," James whispered harshly, as though afraid that his spell didn't work or that anyone would pounce on them at any moment. He was just now starting to regret being half starkers as the cold prickled his skin up into goose flesh.

Lily had followed after Peter, hoping they wouldn't be noticed either. She had a good reputation to uphold and she prayed it wouldn't be tarnished by their late night excursion. Still, her curiousity and need to help her friend outweighed any other need of keeping a clean slate.

As they grew closer to the forest, she didn't like the noises she was hearing. It was like a high pitched squeal that made her stomach turn in knots. She was curious to know what it was exactly, although a small voice was telling her to just hold back a bit.

She let out a little yelp as James seemingly appeared out of thin air. She was momentarily distracted by his naked torso that she didn't even realize Sirius was now laying immobile on the ground. She blinked, realizing what she was doing and looked around her, seeing her friend.

"Stunned him?" she asked, her eyes going back to James'...face. His face. Look at his face.

The entire situation was scaring the hell out of Remus. He didn't know how much more of this he could really take before he fell to pieces. He loved Sirius more than anyone or anything in the world, and seeing him this way was killing him. He could only imagine what it was doing to Sirius himself. He could understand now why he was so disturbed and afraid all the time.

When James moved to stun him, part of him wanted to jump in front of the spell and take the hit for Sirius. He was so protective of him, that even in an instance like this he wanted to shield him from harm. The only reason he didn't was because he felt that what was happening to Sirius now was a greater danger than a stunning spell.

After it happened, he hurried to join James, knowing they only had a limited amount of time to accomplish this task. He draped the cloak over Sirius, then looked up at James. "We've got to get him somewhere he'll feel safe when he wakes up. Otherwise he's going to completely panic."

Peter had stopped moving. James was the leader of sorts, for their little friendship, the group that they had created and dubbed the Marauders.

In a sense, whatever James did was followed to a T.

Peter had never really stopped to question anything, to ask whether it was right or wrong, if he should be helping or going along with it all....now though, he found himself doing just that.

James had stunned Sirius!

He supposed he had never seen anything more strange, and could not bring himself to answer Lily's own confusion, instead he forced himself to move forward, just as Remus appeared, helping James to pull the other teen out of sight.

"Hey." He hissed. "What's happening?"

James looked up around them when he heard other voices, and as quickly as he could, he helped Remus get the final edge of the cloak over Sirius and the evidence of his 'activities'. The other two hardly needed to be faced with that, even if it would help to justify his actions.

"Look, just trust me, it was either that or duelling him. He's not in his right mind; you lot've seen enough to agree with me, yeah?" It wasn't a question really as James hardened his features and looked at each of them, reserving a softer look for Remus last. James had noticed how the other boy seemed to be more attached to Sirius lately and while he didn't know the details, he felt his heart reach out to the resident werewolf more than to the others where Sirius was concerned. He was there for his almost-brother just as much as James himself always was.

"All right, let's just get out of here and we'll talk later. Wouldn't want two of Hogwarts's upstanding Prefects getting caught outside past curfew, would we?" The self-assured and fun-loving grin touched his lips before he cast a levitating charm in the vicinity of his invisibility cloak, putting a testing hand out to make sure that he'd hit his mark in order to guide them all back into the castle.
