Back to base
The University still stands huge and imposing, it's halted building work torn apart to help with fortifications.
Inside there is a large open space, where can foods clothing and medical supplies stand stacked not far away from a huge noisy generator.
Upstairs sits an old media centre from which the broadcast flows.
Some precious electricity is given over to an old CD player, playing constantly in an attempt to drown out the noise.

Sal slid herself out from under the generator at the sound of someone approaching.

Snap took the opportunity to slap a wet slurp across her face before she could come upright, pleased to have caught someone down at his level. His dark ears went back as he grinned at her, showing sharp white teeth, silver tail wagging once before he sat, head turning to look over his shoulder, still grinning in wicked doggy delight.

DP shook his head. "Ssst," he said, softly, calling the dog back to heel. "Sorry..." He knelt, catching the blue dog's massive head against his chest as Snap head-butted him, digging his fingers deep into the silver ruff. Shiny sequins (spelling out the words "You Can't See Me") flicker in the light against the camoflage green of his shirt.

"S'Cool. I love dogs." Sal pulled herself upright, swiping her hands clean on a rag. "And he is just about the best lookin' thing I've seen in the past year.
She took the guy in, cute enough to make her aware of the fact her white vest was grease stained.
"In on the broadcast huh?"

DP ducked his head shyly, then shook it, silently. He tugged on a black ear, then looked at her again. Softly enough to almost hide the burr in his voice, and inadvertantly accenting the drawl instead, he answered, "...came in with a supply run, I guess." He shrugged a shoulder, one corner of his mouth turning up in a shy smile. "I was headed back to Scotland, but they didn't really want to take 'no' for an answer."

He wobbled suddenly as the dog shifted and leaned harder into the scruff scratchings, then adjusted, dropping one knee to the ground to brace against the weight, patting the dog heavily on the thickly barreled ribcage. "...'sides. Snap wasn't getting enough attention, or so he told me." He shrugged.

"So he dragged you in the direction of a bunch of campus girls huh?" Sally teased gently. "Sally, resident grease monkey." She offered her hand for him to shake. "You won't find much, we've stripped down everywhere we can reach. Now we're just trying to find anyone else that's left."

He grinned. "Girls have all the fingernails for scratching through his coat. He likes girls." DP gingerly touched her fingers, barely grasping them before letting go and settling back on his heels. "DP."

Sal looked down at her own hands, busted and messy, the oil refusing to shift from under short, practical nails.
She squatted on her haunches. "So Snap huh? Nice to meetcha." She solemnly offered a battered hand to the dog. "No nails, sorry boy."

DP frowned. "How many people are here?" He glanced around, then looked back at her. "You've got electricity -- have you started gardens or anything like that? Raided the Zoo for meat?"

DP jerked to his feet, backing off, eyes suddenly bleak and dark. "Don't!" He spoke sharply, retreating another step as Snap leapt up and came to heel, looking curiously between the two. "Don't put that on me -- I don't want to carry your souls, too." His voice cracked on the last, and he turned away, blindly heading for the door.

Snap paused, one foot in the air, and looked after him, then looked at Sally again, head tipped, before trotting after his master.

"My soul's my business." Sally responded. "And maybe yours is too. Don't go back out there, it isn't...just don't go back out there." She headed after them as quickly as her exhausted, malnourished frame could carry her.
"God don't make me chase you, DP."

DP stopped, hand on the doorjamb, but didn't turn to look at her. Snap turned, and, as she came toward them, planted himself firmly between them, his head and tail up, ears coming firmly erect as a soft, high-pitched growl rumbled up out of his throat in warning. The dog took one step forward, then paused, watching her carefully with bright, golden eyes, still rumbling out his girlishly high-pitched warning.

"People don't survive out there alone...Nothing does." Sally looked sadly at them both. "I think we all know that your herds will be torn apart, just like everything else." She took another slow step forward "It's OK Snap."

Snap's growl only rose a notch in tone and volume as she moved closer, eyes intently on her face.

DP hesitated a moment, then turned. Ignoring the dog, he considered her, seriously, for a long moment. Finally, softly, he said, his tone frank, "Unless they are cornered, the herds will be able to outrun, outfight and outwit any infected human that comes in scenting range -- and out there, there are a hell of a lot less walls to get cornered against." He indicated the still growling dog. "Snap and me -- we been together a long time. I watch out for him -- he watches out for me. We make a good team -- " he paused, and the bleakness came back into his eyes again, just for a moment, " -- we take care of each other and so far it mostly works." He paused again, then slumped slightly, hissing a soft, wordless command to the dog, who abruptly stopped growling and came to heel, sitting and looking up at him with intent, curious eyes. DP looked up at Sally again, looking tired and defeated. "...its when other people get mixed in that things start falling apart." He shook his head, grief threading into his tone, despite his best efforts to keep it locked away. "Don't put your salvation on me -- you won't live to see it."

Sally snorted. "I live because I say so...I made a choice. We made a choice. I don't look for my salvation in anyone else." She threw her arms in the air. "It's a fucking phrase." She stepped forward, her voice low as she caught the grief in his tone. "It's OK."

DP maintained his place by the door, and simply nodded, once, his own eyes taking in the others silently. Snap stood at his side, head up and ears alert, but similarly silent, his eyes alive with curiosity.
