Back to base
The University still stands huge and imposing, it's halted building work torn apart to help with fortifications.
Inside there is a large open space, where can foods clothing and medical supplies stand stacked not far away from a huge noisy generator.
Upstairs sits an old media centre from which the broadcast flows.
Some precious electricity is given over to an old CD player, playing constantly in an attempt to drown out the noise.

"My soul's my business." Sally responded. "And maybe yours is too. Don't go back out there, it isn't...just don't go back out there." She headed after them as quickly as her exhausted, malnourished frame could carry her.
"God don't make me chase you, DP."

DP stopped, hand on the doorjamb, but didn't turn to look at her. Snap turned, and, as she came toward them, planted himself firmly between them, his head and tail up, ears coming firmly erect as a soft, high-pitched growl rumbled up out of his throat in warning. The dog took one step forward, then paused, watching her carefully with bright, golden eyes, still rumbling out his girlishly high-pitched warning.

"People don't survive out there alone...Nothing does." Sally looked sadly at them both. "I think we all know that your herds will be torn apart, just like everything else." She took another slow step forward "It's OK Snap."

Snap's growl only rose a notch in tone and volume as she moved closer, eyes intently on her face.

DP hesitated a moment, then turned. Ignoring the dog, he considered her, seriously, for a long moment. Finally, softly, he said, his tone frank, "Unless they are cornered, the herds will be able to outrun, outfight and outwit any infected human that comes in scenting range -- and out there, there are a hell of a lot less walls to get cornered against." He indicated the still growling dog. "Snap and me -- we been together a long time. I watch out for him -- he watches out for me. We make a good team -- " he paused, and the bleakness came back into his eyes again, just for a moment, " -- we take care of each other and so far it mostly works." He paused again, then slumped slightly, hissing a soft, wordless command to the dog, who abruptly stopped growling and came to heel, sitting and looking up at him with intent, curious eyes. DP looked up at Sally again, looking tired and defeated. "...its when other people get mixed in that things start falling apart." He shook his head, grief threading into his tone, despite his best efforts to keep it locked away. "Don't put your salvation on me -- you won't live to see it."

Sally snorted. "I live because I say so...I made a choice. We made a choice. I don't look for my salvation in anyone else." She threw her arms in the air. "It's a fucking phrase." She stepped forward, her voice low as she caught the grief in his tone. "It's OK."

DP pulled back, sharply, bumping into the doorframe, avoiding her. Instantly, his body language shut down, going tense and tight and impersonal, his eyes cooling and blanking as he forced a small, crooked smile into place and deliberately changed the subject, unwilling to talk about it. "Look -- Snap and me, we haven't had a chance to have dinner yet. Is there anywhere around here I could light up a can of Sterno without bringing trouble down?"

"You can eat with us if you want?" Sally said softly.
A sharp sound from behind her drew her attention. "Seeing as the others are here and all."

DP glanced behind her, then shrugged and nodded before straightening again. "All right, then."

Sally loped back, hitting switches that activated the gate and door.
