Back to base
The University still stands huge and imposing, it's halted building work torn apart to help with fortifications.
Inside there is a large open space, where can foods clothing and medical supplies stand stacked not far away from a huge noisy generator.
Upstairs sits an old media centre from which the broadcast flows.
Some precious electricity is given over to an old CD player, playing constantly in an attempt to drown out the noise.

"Ahh, no, I'm pretty certain I shouldn't," Alex replied in a curt tone, his eyes flicking around the room again, running a hand through his hair. "I'm not planning on staying anyway...made that mistake once, won't do it again."

"Or, you could trust us...we need someone with medical knowledge." India said in her soft voice. "You don't know us, and you've been through something...I'll be willing to listen if you'll be willing to tell."

Alex frowned at her. "Medical knowledge? What makes you think I can help there?" He quirked an eyebrow at her. "Yes, I don't know you...and you don't know me." He sighed and ran a hand down his face, before adding in a flat, short tone. "I'm not willing to tell."

"Contusions and abrasions...rather than bruises and cuts." India responded "I'm brighter than I look."

Alex sighed and rolled his eyes. "Yes, fine, I have medical training." He shrugged, his tone suddenly turning bitter. "Which is why the other group were 'glad' to see me at first."

India shook her head. "Is it fun being that bitter?"

"'Fun' would pretty much defeat the object of being bitter, wouldn't it?" Alex replied with another shrug. "Should I be all pleasant and happy? Terribly sorry, but between trying not to get killed or infected by the murderous, rage-filled kind; and almost getting lynched by the non-infected kind, I thought bitterness would be appropriate."

Alex frowned at her again, before leaning against the wall and lowering his gaze to look at the floor. "I'll stay for a little while." He eventually murmured in a quiet voice.

Wary brown eyes flicked up to look at her as she approached. "What?" Alex raised his head to look at her properly, quirking a questioning eyebrow.

Alex stiffened slightly at how close she was but otherwise just continued to frown at her. "Umm...right.." He rubbed the back of his neck before letting out a sigh and rolling his eyes, before holding out his hand. "Alex McEwan," he offered as a proper introduction. "Doctor...but titles mean sod all now really...so.." He added with a shrug.

Alex lips quirked briefly in a tight smile. "Well...obviously you didn't..." He paused and rubbed absently at his right arm. "Is there..umm...somewhere I can...have a bit of..privacy?" He asked hesitantly. He wanted to check the bandage on his upper right arm but didn't want to do it where someone might see.

"The med zone's the best we can do." India's tone was sarcastic as she indicated a small curtained off area.

Alex glanced over to where she indicated and grimaced slightly. "Ahh...right..." He murmured, turning his head to look over at the kitchen area as the dog barked, his lips twitching in a brief smile as the dog chased the ball.

He shook his head and turned back to India, giving her a small nod. "Right...well...I guess it'll have to do then.." He muttered, waiting for her to move before pushing himself off the wall.

Alex grunted slightly in response, rolling his eyes and moved over to the curtained off area. He gingerly pulled aside the curtain and curled his lip in obvious disdain.

The 'Med Zone' consisted of a stretcher in a carpeted area with ragged 'curtains' hanging around it. An incomplete set of medical equipment sat on on a makeshift medical trolley. Despite the dark and dingy look of it, Alex could still make out some blood spatter.

"Nice," he muttered aloud.

Alex watched her move away and after checking that no one else was nearby, ducked behind the curtain. He blew out a breath and ruffled his hair, dumping his bag on on end of the stretcher before shrugging out of his coat and laying it on the stretcher. He grimaced at the blood stain on his shirt sleeve; old dried blood with a few spots of fresh blood. Opening a pocket on the bag and pulled out some dressing. He undid his shirt; revealing a t shirt underneath; and shrugged out of the right sleeve, wincing as pain went through his upper arm.

He pulled a pair of dark-framed glasses from his coat pocket, put them on and carefully removed the blood-spotted bandage, revealing a recently stitched wound...that was actually a bio-hazard symbol, that had been carved into his skin with a knife.

"Bugger.." He muttered under his breath, noticing that a few of the stitches had popped, probably from the van ride. He swore again under his breath and reached into the bag again, pulling out sutures and a needle. He bit his lip slightly, biting back a hiss of pain as he started to redo the stitches with his left hand - looking up every now and then to check no one was nearby.

Once done, he wiped the wound clean before re-bandaging it and shrugging back into his shirt and coat. He sighed, remaining seated on the stretcher and dropped his head into his hands with a small groan.

Alex jumped slightly at the sound of her voice. He rubbed his hands over his face; behind the glasses that were still on his face; and through his hair "Fine...whatever.." He muttered, snatching the bloody bandage up and stuffed it into his bag.
