Back to base
The University still stands huge and imposing, it's halted building work torn apart to help with fortifications.
Inside there is a large open space, where can foods clothing and medical supplies stand stacked not far away from a huge noisy generator.
Upstairs sits an old media centre from which the broadcast flows.
Some precious electricity is given over to an old CD player, playing constantly in an attempt to drown out the noise.

"S'Cool. I love dogs." Sal pulled herself upright, swiping her hands clean on a rag. "And he is just about the best lookin' thing I've seen in the past year.
She took the guy in, cute enough to make her aware of the fact her white vest was grease stained.
"In on the broadcast huh?"

DP ducked his head shyly, then shook it, silently. He tugged on a black ear, then looked at her again. Softly enough to almost hide the burr in his voice, and inadvertantly accenting the drawl instead, he answered, "...came in with a supply run, I guess." He shrugged a shoulder, one corner of his mouth turning up in a shy smile. "I was headed back to Scotland, but they didn't really want to take 'no' for an answer."

He wobbled suddenly as the dog shifted and leaned harder into the scruff scratchings, then adjusted, dropping one knee to the ground to brace against the weight, patting the dog heavily on the thickly barreled ribcage. "...'sides. Snap wasn't getting enough attention, or so he told me." He shrugged.

"So he dragged you in the direction of a bunch of campus girls huh?" Sally teased gently. "Sally, resident grease monkey." She offered her hand for him to shake. "You won't find much, we've stripped down everywhere we can reach. Now we're just trying to find anyone else that's left."

He grinned. "Girls have all the fingernails for scratching through his coat. He likes girls." DP gingerly touched her fingers, barely grasping them before letting go and settling back on his heels. "DP."

Sal looked down at her own hands, busted and messy, the oil refusing to shift from under short, practical nails.
She squatted on her haunches. "So Snap huh? Nice to meetcha." She solemnly offered a battered hand to the dog. "No nails, sorry boy."

DP nudged the dog away from his chest and Snap turned to look, then, tail wagging amiably, wandered over to Sally. With a cheerful grunt, he dropped one shoulder mid-step to somersault onto his back in front of her, broad silver belly offered invitingly, head twisted to eye her with delight. DP sighed, grinning, then shrugged. "...he likes belly rubs."

Sally laughed softly and reached out to rub the dogs belly. She looked up at DP grinning. "He must be good to have around...life isn't quite as scary when you've got a dog with you. I'm not great on breeds, what is he?"

DP answered softly, eyes on his dog, still smiling slightly, crookedly, "He's an Australian Cattle Dog." He glanced up at her, starting to relax slightly. "They're about 75% Dingo, if you trace it back -- and the rest of it is about any kind of herding dog you can think of, as well as a few others like setters, dalmatians, and bull terriers." He shrugged. "Not very common over here, but we had them all over the place on my Da's ranch in Oklahoma. Best dog I know."

He grinned again, inching forward slightly to tug playfully on one floppy black lip. "Even if they are goofballs."

Snap thumped his tail once in happy response.

"We had a dalmatian when I was little, he was insane...My best friend when I was growing up." Sally said softly, scratching Snap. "So, Scotland?"

He blinked, and looked up at her, startled. "Hmm?" Snap twisted and came to his feet, giving her an identical, startled expression out of bright golden eyes that were far too intelligent. Automatically, DP reached out and buried his fingers into the silver ruff, scratching the strong shoulders. "Oh," he shrugged, "...that's where I work. Worked." He hesitated a moment, then shook his head and continued, "...figured the safest place to be was in the high country, and the high country I know best is up near Kelsea. Plenty of sheep -- " again, the shy, self-depreciating smile, " -- which I used to get paid to herd, so I know where they are like to be. Mutton's not so bad." He met her eyes for a moment, then dropped his gaze, focussing on Snap's ears. "Low population density means fewer Infected and less places to be caught out, I figure."

"Probably a good idea, we haven't eaten properly in..." Sally thought "...Oh god knows."
