Thread: Living Dead Halloween
WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: Halloween night, October 31st
WHERE: School grounds, the graveyard, the woods, the dorms

Barclay observed the clouds. It had been a cold, crisp day, perfectly suited for autumn and hallowe’en. Tomorrow, it would rain, he knew: the trees had whispered it to him, far more attuned to the weather patterns than he was. Tonight, it would remain dry.

A wind whipped up, sending a chill across the graveyard. Some people burrowed deeper into their coats. None of them were teachers, who were standing vigil. Solemn. It was about time. The sun was almost gun. Barclay looked around, teachers and Experts surrounding him. Most students avoided the graveyard, too busy doing prepwork for Halloween, but among Experts, it was tradition to be there when the dead rose from their graves. A last adieu, if you will.

Barclay could feel Ashton’s presence behind him, knowing how the dragon would look: serious and curious. Leon was a few steps away. Barclay wondered if it was weird for him, seeing how he had attended this last year, together with Mickey. Tonight, he was here, attending it with his sire, who stood behind the fangling, looking grim. Like a thug, but grim. And then there were the teachers: Ms. Stheno with her snakes curled up, Mr. Pheres with his arms crossed, Mr. Farrowe, Mr. Kaden, Ms. Hallowfen… Barclay would miss them, he realized. His eyes found Ms. Menides who was looking… almost sad. He had never seen her look sad. Stern, disappointed, kind, yes. Sad? No.

It was disconcerting.

They rose like smoke from the graves, strands of thin ethereal white that slowly shaped themselves into human-like shapes of silvery grey and translucent blue. A teacher with a fiddle started playing La Danse Macabre and, simultaneously, a low voice joined in. It sounded like a dirge. Barclay didn’t just hear the music: he could feel it, shivering down his spine, making goosebumps on his skin. The spirits assembled around Mr. Cavanaugh, the singer, waiting for him to finish. Like the living, they were paying their respects.

Barclay watched them, these ghosts, these memories of tales that ended unhappily. A pale, thin man with a commanding presence - Barclay thought he recognized him from one of the paintings in the hallways. A sad-looking maid with an apron and a bonnet, her wrists cut open and a silvery light pouring out. A Native American man covered in tattoos and scars, who reminded Barclay of how Leon used to be. That poor teacher who hadn’t survived an encounter with the Wendigo. And Jonah.

When Mr. Cavanaugh noticed him, his voice halted for a moment.

Ms. Menides walked towards her deceased student as the song ended and the ghosts started making their way towards the school, following path of the warm yellow lights that would lead them to the dorms and the school buildings. Barclay knew most of them would go to the Pegasus house, where the living and the dead gathered and communed. The living shared a meal while the dead could share their experiences.

Like always, the spirits would avoid House Hydra, which had made a proper haunted house. The theme this year was Haunted Hospital, adopting a proper bent way to their house of horrors. Crazy nurses, insane doctors, and ghosts haunting the hospital corridors… This year, they were going for traditional horror, fewer magic tricks to scare everyone. You didn’t need tricks when you had doctors with bloodied aprons and zombie nurses with sharp scissors. House Kitsune had been turned into a paradise for AV geeks, with their movies and video games. This year, their house had been themed towards dance games, mixing it up. House Sphinx would be all about the board games, though rumor had it that they’d rigged their basement as a laser gaming hall. There'd be poker tables as well, though the students had to bet with M&M's, not money.

And then you had House Ladon, which is where most everyone alive ended up to see the sun rise. It was where they built the bonfire and where the music was the loudest and the most danceable. Usually, students were the music-makers, the most promising disk jockeys getting about an hour to get everyone dancing. No matter how vigilant the teachers were, there was always some way to get alcohol. Even Mr. Kaden’s presence couldn’t avoid that, though he tried. It might have something to do with the fact that every year, all the teachers gathered here during the crucial hour before the festivities started. Ladons weren't known for their intelligence, but when it came to creatively breaking the rules, they were a match for most Hydras.

Barclay watched most people - both living and dead - leave, except for Ms. Menides and Jonah. A few teachers lingered there as well, watching. The teacher and her former stood there, looking at each other. Nothing was said, but it seemed something was happening. Barclay could feel the prickle of it. And finally, after a few quiet, tense moments, both Jonah and Ms. Menides chanced a small smile.

That was the signal. The last remaining people in the graveyard left for the school. Barclay took Ashton’s hand and they went back to their House. It was time to get to work.

Just Away from the Bonfire: Ellie & Rider

The way she chewed her bottom lip nervously didn't escape his attention and Rider's cheeks dimpled as he tried to hide a smile. Whatever she thought of herself, Rider found Ellie completely charming. Everything from her accent, to her love of fantasy, to her ability to still be open with people after the things she'd been through. He enjoyed being with her and seeing her happy. Of course, her looks didn't hurt either, and his eyes stayed trained on her lips slightly longer than necessary.

He clinked his plastic cup with hers and took a swallow of the cider. With his tolerance, he didn't need to worry about sipping the way she did. Then she asked him if he was cold and looked so quickly embarrassed that he had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing. His dimples did make an appearance again, however.

"Are you worried about me getting sick, El?" He tugged a lock of her hair softly and smiled. "Don't worry. I'm pretty tough. I can handle the cold. Or was that a hint that you want to help keep me warm?" The light from the bonfire reflected mischievously in his eyes.

He might be surprised how much Ellie really hid. She had nightmares almost every night. Approaching or talking to new people took every ounce of courage she had. It helped when people were nice to her first. She wanted friends...needed them, really. She didn't even realize how much. She just knew that the people she'd made friends with she tended to stick to.

Those dimples of his were divine! And distracting. While he looked at her lips, her own hazel eyes picked out the appealing little divots near the corners of his mouth.

"Well...aye, but do you even get sick?" She grinned for the tug on her hair then tried to tame the mass of it with one hand. And then...

He went and made that suggestion. Ellie blinked in stunned silence because whoa. The idea of helping to keep him warm...that look in his eyes...he didn't seem terribly adverse to the idea and...now Ellie's face was near the shade of her hair as she laughed in embarrassment. "Like ya need my help there!"

All the girls chased after him and he could have anyone he wanted. Including some of the girls what were showing off their legs and chest who were no better than they ought to be.

He grinned in triumph as she blushed scarlet. That was the reaction he'd been expecting and Ellie didn't disappoint. He laughed along with her, though part of his mind wandered to thoughts of a different reaction. One that would leave the pair of them feeling a little warmer. He kept those thoughts to himself though and gave her an amused shrug. It was true that he never wanted for attention, female or male.

"Well then at least come dance with me." His drink was still in his right hand, but he reached his left out to her in an invitation.

She knew she was amusing him, but he wasn't being cruel about it. Ellie still felt like hiding her face. For as warm as it felt she could tell her fair complexion was betraying her. Blast it anyway.

"Dance?" Her brows shot right up at that. "Oh you like riskin' your toes if you're askin' me to dance!" Eep! Another sip of cider was taken because she knew she was absolute bunk at dancing, but she couldn't really tell Rider no.

Rider shook his head. "Maybe you just never had the right partner." He'd had a lot of experience dancing over the years. Mainly for fun at parties, but there was that weird phase when he was 12 and his grandmother had insisted he take ballroom lessons. "Besides, I talked to my toes, and they said they're willing to risk it."

He downed the last of his drink and set his cup aside. "If you don't have fun, just say the word and we'll stop and never speak of it again. But I promise you'll have fun."

"No," she affirmed, bit her slip then hunched her shoulders up. "I never really danced." They didn't exactly encourage such things in Anton Castle. No dancing. Singing. Or anything else that most people learning growing up. Ellie bit her lip, took a drink for courage then gave him a lopsided smile. "Tis your risk..."

One more drink from her cup put the contents down to a level where if it got kicked not too much would be spilled, then Ellie set it down without a care that someone might find it before stepping up Rider. "All right. Show me how this is done."

He didn't miss the look that clouded her face as she confirmed she'd never really danced. Not for the first time, his spirit dampened a little as he thought about what it must have been like for her locked up as she was. His smile never faltered, though. He was determined that she would enjoy herself. "Well you can make up for it tonight then."

When she set her cup down and came toward him, his entire face lit up. "That's my girl." Standing so close to one another, it became clear just how much he dwarfed her. Nearly a full foot taller than her, the top of her head barely reached his shoulder. And his giant hand almost completely enveloped hers. "Such a wee lass," he said with an only mildly bad impression of her accent.

Bad impressions were soon forgotten, however, as Rider began to dance with her. One hand in hers and the other on her waist, he twirled her around in time with the music. It was an upbeat tune, and he grinned as they bopped along to it. "See? Not so awful, right? Tell me you're not having fun." He spun her around for good measure.

Rider was being awfully sweet. Ellie appreciated how he went out of his way to make sure she was having fun. Sorin and Thierry too, but Rider was...well...him. If it never happened again Ellie would happily hold this moment close to her heart for a long time.

The attempt at her accent made her laugh, and her eyes light up. "That was awful," she said through her giggles.

She was used to people being taller than her so it was nothing for her to crane her head back to look up at Rider. It spilled her hair down her back, but at least it was out of her face for once. Her hand in his was warmer than others, especially being outside this long, but her magic kept her warmer than other people.

There were a few false starts as she had to learn how to take a lead. Rider would go one way while Ellie thought to go another. It made her laugh at herself until she finally let go of trying to be in control. The whisky in her cider certainly helped, and she found herself focused just on what they were doing. And Rider. Everything else was a merry blur.

"Only on account tha' I'm trusting you to not let me fall on me nose," she answered then giggled for the turn.

Bears were known to have a sense of smell that was extremely strong. Some said they could smell 7 times better than a bloodhound. This was a blessing and a curse for Kaden. He'd used it to track down their students a year ago who'd been kidnapped by a crazed warlock. He'd used it to locate contraband during monthly room inspections. In human form, his sense of smell wasn't quite as strong, but it was still greater than an average man's. Which meant, as he was making a pass close by the bonfire - to his credit, not approaching directly through, not wanting to be a complete buzzkill for the bonfire - he could smell alcohol in a cup a student was holding or even smell the student on the cup they'd set down to drink.

Such was the case of Rider and Ellie. Their cups may be out of their hands, but the scent of their hands were still on their cups, and so was the alcohol. Kaden was particularly protective of the young witches who'd come back from Romania, scarred and underfed, frightened and unsure. He was also fond of Rider, particularly because he was being such a kind classmate and Ladonite to befriend one of the witches. But that only gave them both a slight forbearance with the grumpy bear who would rather be having second dinner and settling in for the winter months.

"Thought you two could get away with it?" He growled as he stepped out of the shadows on the war path. Their cups were in his hands, one in each, and he looked at them accusingly, interrupting what might have been a truly enjoyable dance to the light of the bonfire. "Care to explain these?"

Usually Rider was good at keeping an eye for teachers. He liked to make himself scarce when he was breaking the rules, to avoid the punishment that always came along with such endeavors. However, this time he’d been so focused on making Ellie laugh while they danced that Mr K’s appearance had caught him unawares. Shit he thought to himself when he realized his head of house knew they’d been drinking.

“Hey, Mr K,” he kept his voice light, but not flippantly so. “Stealing a dance with the prettiest girl here? Had to try to get away with it. Can you blame me?”

He knew they were busted, but if he was going to get punished, he wanted to at least try to lighten the mood a little. He honestly really liked Mr Kaden and didn’t like seeing him looking to grumpy.
“It was me,” he conceded with a sheepish smile. “You should punish me, not Ellie.”

Ellie had squeaked and jumped damn near out of her skin when Mr. Kaden's voice came suddenly out of nowhere. Who knew such a large man could move so quietly? Of course, not hearing him had nothing to do with having almost two cups of spiked cider and dancing with Rider.

Nobody ever looked so guilty and surprised. Ellie's hazel eyes were wide, her face first drained of color then flushed bright scarlet. Then Rider tried to take the blame and oh hell no!

"Dinna listen ta him, Mr. Kaden," she said as she stepped right between Rider and their teacher. "He's jest tryin' ta be gallant. I brought the whisky." Oh, what a lie. "I didna want to try it alone and Rider agreed it wasna a good idea fer me to drink alone."

A stubborn look came to her blushing face as she jutted her jaw up and out. The few times she'd been in trouble for shoving a bully into a mud puddle or something similar she'd worn the same look. No way was she going to let Rider take the fall for her.

The look on their faces was priceless, and if Kaden wasn't in such a sour mood with tensions high after the mysterious death of one of their students, he might have actually laughed and let them off easier for being so loyal to one another. Ellie would've made a fine Ladon. But no, this was serious business. Alcohol had been consumed by minors and one of them happened to be a pyromancer who already had just a tentative control over her powers.

He looked from one student to the other as each tried to take the rap for the alcohol. Even if they had been convincing - which they weren't - they both had equally broken the rules. Kaden could smell it.

"You're both done," Kaden growled, spilling the rest of Ellie's drink into the bushes with an angry jerk. "Get back to your room - your own rooms - and stay there. I don't want to see or smell either of you for the rest of the night. Understood?" He fixed each of them with a sharp look and stacked the cups together.

"You'll be serving a week of detention starting tomorrow at dawn, bright and early, with the groundskeeper." There was always a mess to clean up on November 1st. Halloween at the Academy was an all night affair.

Rider actually had to resist the urge to slap his palm against his face as Ellie jumped in front of him and tried to lie about bringing the whiskey. He managed to resist however, and his only response was a small cringe and a twitch of his hand. He quickly smoothed out his features however, and made a mental note to talk to Ellie later about A) telling believable lies and B) never owning up to actually bringing the booze.

While he wasn’t surprised at the punishment, Rider couldn’t help but deflate a little as his head of house ordered the two of them back to their rooms for the rest of the night. The Halloween party was always his favorite, and he knew there were still a few good hours left. But he also knew better to argue with a surly bear. He’d gotten into a lot of trouble of the years and he’d fine-tuned his senses to know when he could push it, and when it would be wise to keep his mouth shut.

“Understood,” Rider confirmed, even though the thought of getting up at dawn for detention pained him. At least it was a Sunday and he could sneak a nap later on. “Sorry, Mr K. I’m just going to walk Ellie back to her room first, then I’ll head right back to Ladon.”

"What?!" Ellie's lips parted in outrage for being kicked to her room for the rest of the party. She snapped her mouth shut swiftly enough, however, settling for a stubborn glare for Mr. Kaden. This was so not fair. Other kids were drinking. Not that she'd snitch on them. And she hardly ever got in trouble!

Fine. And she didn't need an escort! Ellie started back toward the school in something of a stomp with a final withering look at Mr. Kaden on her way by. "...yer more fun as a bear..." she muttered under her breath.

The fiery side of Ellie was not something Kaden usually saw from her, so it came as a surprise when she showed outrage at the detention assignment. The stubborn glare from her was something he was very familiar with from students in general, and Kaden crossed his arms and nodded at Rider.

"Get moving," he instructed. He trusted Rider to take Ellie back to her room and then report to his own dorm, not just because Rider knew Kaden would be checking, but because Kaden knew Rider was loyal and not one to go against his Head of House.

Ellie, on the other hand, had a lot to learn. As she muttered under her breath, Kaden didn't need his heightened sense of hearing to catch every word, and both of his hands went to his hips. "That's two weeks detention now, Miss MacNab! I suggest you take yourself back to your dorm before I make it three!"

Rider's hearing was not nearly so good as Kaden's and he didn't actually hear Ellie's muttered words after she'd stomped away from him. He could could tell she'd said something, however, and it clearly hadn't been good, based on the teacher's response. Rider inwardly facepalmed again.

He took a couple of long strides and caught up to her before she could open her mouth again and land herself with a month's worth of detention. "C'mon, El." He tried to convey a Please keep your mouth closed and come with me expression with his eyes.

The added detention didn't just get a shocked look from Ellie, but her eyes betrayed her and filled of their own accord. She thought Mr. Kaden liked her! Bloody hell! But no way would she risk more so after a look of absolute betrayal she whipped right back around to head for the school.

She was aware of Rider being there, and suddenly wished he wasn't. Her cheeks were burning with embarrassment, her nose begged her to sniffle and she had to swipe angrily at her eyes to keep them from spilling over.

"'M, fine." She had wanted it to be a grumble, but her voice hitched. Damn it.

Ellie took off like a shot, and Rider gave one apologetic backward glance to their grumpy teacher before he followed after her.

Obviously she was upset. Though she tried to hide it, he could tell. She wasn't always the best at hiding her emotions. Rider gave her a sympathetic smile when she tried to proclaim just how fine she was.

"I know you are," he answered her warmly. He didn't like seeing the shining in her eyes. A lot of guys freaked when they saw a girl about to cry, but Rider had always been the sort to try and cheer them up again. Sometimes it worked, others it didn't. But he'd always try. "But hey, don't worry about the detentions, okay? Yeah, they suck, but it won't be the worst thing ever. Trust me, I've had more of them than you could ever dream of getting." He smiled at her and his dimples flashed. "Look at them like a rite of passage. Everyone cool gets detentions now and then. You went to a party, had some drinks, and had a good time, right? Well congratulations, Ellie. You are officially a normal teenager."

He grinned again and raised his shoulder in a half shrug. "Or normal for St Margaret's anyway."

"I don't mind doin' it." The cuff of her sweater sleeve was taking some damp damage as she tried to keep those stupid tears away. "I mean, it's far and away from the punishment we'd get at Anton but.." Her grimace tightened her jaw as she held her breath. Sometimes that worked to settle her down. Not this time however. "I feel like I'm a horrible disappointment now. Like I dun somethin' terribly wrong."

And that was the rub. Since coming to St. Margaret's she'd been on her best behavior, her definition of it anyway. Keeping out of sight, under the radar and trying not to be noticed. That was how it was done in Anton. How it had to be done. Bad things happened if you attracted attention to yourself there, especially drawing punishment down on you. Not that she expected the same treatment here, but it really hadn't been all that long ago, and old habits died hard. These folk were good to her and the rest of her oathbound. Now look what she'd done.

Rider's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Terribly wrong? What? Ellie, come on. It's not like that here."

Though he wanted to cheer her up, Rider had difficulty grasping her perspective on life. He'd grown up in a supporting and loving family, and even when he screwed up, he knew they'd always still be there for him. The lightbulb went on when he remembered that Ellie didn't have that. She had years of negative enforcement from people who had no trouble at all hurting her, and wouldn't think twice if something bad happened to her.

"I know it's probably hard to believe, but you'll have to do a lot more that this to ever have any of the teachers consider you a horrible disappointment. They aren't like the people you were with before, El. They're teachers. They get that kids screw up sometimes."

If Rider weren't with her right now she might have actually run out into the woods to hide, ban or no ban. Everything she was feeling was magnified...thank you spiked cider and inexperience there with...which was kind of frightening.

"I dunno," she said as she looked up at Rider, pleading eyes, damp lashes and all. "He seemed awful mad. I'm not even really payin' to be here. I'm a ward. They could yank that away." Which was a really scary thought. Where would she go then? Sorin and the others would still be here!

“Well a good first step to getting back into his good graces is getting back to the dorms quickly.” Rider put his arm around Ellie’s shoulders and pointed them in the direction of Pegasus. He kept his strides shorter for her sake, but he did make sure they were moving again. He squeezed her shoulder lightly.

"I'm goin'," she mumbled petulantly then sighed. So much for Halloween, but Rider was being nice. Anyone else would have probably been just as mad at her as Mr. Kaden for getting them in trouble. She was grateful that he wasn't, and leaned against him when he squeezed her shoulder.

His reassurance helped. Even though she wasn't sure she believed him entirely she did trust him, so she looked up at him with a weak little smile. "Aye. I trust ya." She bumped the side of her head against him as they walked. "Thanks, Rider. Yer a good friend." And she really needed those.

He smiled happily at her response. “Aye,” he responded in another terrible attempt at mimicking her accent. “I am, aren’t I?” He laughed at himself and turned his head to rest his chin on the top of her hair for a moment. His voice returned to normal, and was sweetly earnest. “You’re a good friend too, Ellie. I’m glad you guys are here.”

At that point they’d reached the Pegasus dorms and he halted. “Don’t be too hard on yourself about tonight, yeah?” He pulled his arm from around her shoulder and faced her. “I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow morning for detention.” He winked. “Remember to drink a glass of water before you go to bed.”

The horrible attempt at a Scottish accent managed to pull a giggle and a small but outraged smile from Ellie, but when she chastised him it was in solid Gaelic. "You are an irrepressible imp, and the day you cannot make me smile is the day the sun does not rise." But the warm fuzzies that came from the declaration of friendship in return made her eyes all squishy again, and her smile soften.

Ellie faced Rider when they got to the dorm, wrinkled her nose at the admonition but nodded. "Water. Right. I will." But there was no promises on not feeling guilty.
