Who: Shannon and Loki
Where: Her bed
What: A bad dream
When: Early morning
Rating: high for mentions of things and stuff
Open: no
Status: on going

Loki had been a still sleep companion, a cool bed parner for her overheated body. She almost had the notion that he watched her sleep more than do any himself. Though these past few days he was in someone else's body.... He thrashed rather viciously and it roused her from her sleep. Pushing a hand through her mussed hair, she slowly sat up. He was still asleep. And though it would be uncomfortable, perhaps he would be comforted by her warmth.

Shannon dragged up the covers, she knew she had to be the one to shove them down, and eased herself closer to him. Sliding her arm around his waist she found him bathed with sweat. At the same time a distressed murmur reached her ears.

She didn't know what he dreamed of, but she'd never heard him speak in his sleep. Very gently she pressed her lips to his bare shoulder. Not at all distressed that he didn't look like himself. And knowing as soon as the air conditioner kicked on that it would no doubt chill him, she tucked the covers tighter around him. Whispering softly, in effort not to wake him, but to perhaps change his dream just a little... "It's alright. I am here my king. No one will harm you." A little bit of smoke escaped her nose, just enough so that he would smell it.

"No, I haven't. My intent was to remind you. You weren't, or didn't seem, as bothered to be Eggsy, given that he was also female at the time, as you are Jack. And he was just as mortal, and midgardian." Shannon knew there was something else to it. Was it Jack's age? She wasn't trying to open the flood gates, but a little drip, a trickle. A small something.

She opened the door and held it for him. Doubting that they would run into anyone up at this hour. And she was intent on making him tea.

He glanced at her unimpressed. "There is a huge difference between these bodies," he explained dismissively as he passed through the door. And he had not been in the hunt back then. He did not have this caved in feeling where he could almost feel Thanos's breath on his neck. His hand wandered towards it and brushed lightly against his own. The memory of his fingers choking him would never go away.

"Of course there is, you're in a middle aged man, and Eggsy was a twenty something young woman. You can't get more different. The only likeness would be their mortality and earth." Shannon dropped her voice just a little, so that it wouldn't carry through any of the doors between them and the kitchen. Following shortly behind him. She didn't expect anyone to be up.

"Then you have your answer," he said shortly as he followed her. Whatever she would choose that to be. If he let her come up with an answer, maybe the crossfire would cease.

Something told her that wasn't all. That wasn't his only reason for it bothering him so. But she let it drop. For now. "I'll fix you some camomile and nettle leaf tea then. That should sooth any aches you have, and help you get back to sleep." Because why would dreams of a man he didn't seem to care for, hunting his family, and a body that was old, keep him from sleep.

Loki was grateful for the break. He already felt vulnerable in this body. It was impossible to hold onto any sense of strength when this state was as good as it would ever get. Eggsy's young form had enabled the illusion of eternal youth. But in this it was a steep climb to the bottom.

He was quiet for a while as he watched her. "I do not know how you humans can live like this. This body has seen short of a century and it is dying already." He had been surprised at how much it had bothered Jack. Why did they even care to make plans?

When they had made it into the kitchen she set the kettle on the stove, after filling it full of water, and set about setting up a steeper full of the concoction she'd mentioned. "To be honest, we're dying from our first breath. That one has seen a rougher tumble through life than some do." She'd read the books. Often she didn't care if the people in it were there or not. She didn't interact with most. "He was supposed to die before he reached thirty."

Shannon retrieved one of the frozen honey spoons she'd made so that it would make the tea easier to drink. "I'm not sure why he's here at sixty, but like most I'm sure he is grateful for the pain to remind him he is still alive, and no doubt has a few different pills that help alleviate the aches." She set one of her favorite mugs down on the counter, and stuck the spoon inside, with the steeper. Now she just had to wait for the water.

The revelation of Jack's early death did not come as a surprise to Loki. He was unaware that it was bound to the dreams and memories he was experiencing or rooted in the knowledge that there were many different versions of a universe out there. There was no set course for a given person or universe. But he would not lecture Shannon on her misconception.

"Thirty is hardly a whole life," he mentioned, forgetting the fact that the woman in front of him was no older. "It is a few breaths." He wave a hand dismissively. "They let their Empires be led by children." He had seen the young Kings on their throne. Half the age Katherine was.

"No it's not. But I don't think people plan to die that soon." She knew she hadn't. She had planned to see her daughter thrive and grow. But if they were in their own times, if she had not come back, her days would be numbered. She thought for a second about bringing up what she and Katherine had talked about. But without the suppress their daughters repressed memory of it, she thought better of it.

"But he died to save his family, in the book. I would like to know how he ended up here, now. And how much it changed things." She collected the kettle, which was near the whistle point, and ran it over the honeyed spoon and the tea steeper.

Loki would have answered and told her about how he thought a century was just as short. But Shannon had stirred the the conversation back to a previous topic. Her interest in Jack was higher than Loki enjoyed it to be.

"I care not for the differences between the universes of mortals," he waved a hand and slouched back in his seat. He already knew more about the man's life what he liked to know. It was unsettling. The life the mortal had let was one of hardship with parts that reminded him too much of his own. "He came here like most others came here." Amelia had seen to it.

She brought the mug over and placed it in front of him. "You don't? I thought this particular one would have some interest for you. I have the book if you'd rather read it for yourself." He had seemed to prickle. Was he jealous?

"I know that, I mean what was his life like when he did. It's clear that he lived much longer, in a mortal's frame of time." Shannon placed herself in front of him, pointing out the wrinkles he had that he wouldn't have had at 30.

Now he raised an eyebrow. She really did seem obsessed with this man. "Why is it of such interest to you?" Shannon was living among the gods, why was she interested in this mere mortal? "If you want to read a good book, I recommend the Tales of Raegon's Dynasty." Now that was a good book. Intrigue, manipulation and a dark family secret.

"Because, as much as you'd like me to stay obtuse, I am not. Being in this man's body bothers you. And I don't think it is as simple as "he's old". So I'm using reasoning. And Raegon's Dynasty will not help me with that." HE was an interest for her. Not Jack. And Loki was a puzzle wrapped up in an riddle, tied with a big enigma bow. "Are you jealous? Afraid I might run off to a mortal man that's past middle age?" She teased him lightly. Trying to lighten the mood.

The god started to chuckle. Him? Jealous of a mortal? Of this mortal! He himself might be dead but even then his appeal outlasted that of this body. "Now, do I have reason to be?" he asked playfully, going along with the change of mood.

"Of course not. Because no matter what you look like on the outside, you are still you. I can close eyes, and see you." She had been tempted to do just that, and reach out and stroke his face. But didn't feel the want for rejection, because he would no doubt pull away, and it would change the mood yet again. So instead Shannon did not hold the full effect he had on her from her face, from her eyes. "Besides I thought I proved that point rather solidly when you were Eggsy."

"Ah, now, you might have had some strange fetishes," he held up his hands in an 'I do not even want to know'-gesture and smirked. "Maybe you are indeed into hanging skin and broken joints." His tone was still light as he continued, even though the words that followed held a little too much truth to them. "For there must be a reason why you share a bed with a dead man." Jack had let him know all too well how disgusting his usual self was.

"Some would say I do have some very strange fetishes, considering I don't balk at any of the transformations you make." She didn't find them strange at all. One of her favorites being the snake. It was another brilliant point to draw out. And she was about to add that she didn't have any 'daddy' fetishes, but was stopped by the dead man comment. Then she couldn't resist touching his face. "Because your soul, your mind, and your heart remain yours. The body is just a vessel." She slid her the backs of her fingers along his jaw. "I have only told you this once, but I will repeat it because it needs to be said: I love you Loki, not because you are a god, or because you are Asgardian royalty. It doesn't matter the body you're in, or the shape of it."

He grew tense under her touch and her words. Those words were often the climax of romantic tales or heroic eposes. Yet, here he sat wishing that they had not been uttered. His soul... he did not even know what it stood for.

"Now you have chosen the wrong man to have talks like this. My family is not known for exchanges of the heart."

"Perhaps, if I expected poetry in return, or if I even expected the sentiment to be returned. But I don't. It is enough for me that you simply want me around, whatever your reasons are. I know you guard that part of you, and me being mortal ..." Shannon sighed softly. "I know I'm not likely to ever hear those words or anything like it. But," She let her hand drop as she turned around, picking the kettle back up she returned it to its base. "I am old enough to know just because my heart wants what it wants does not mean yours does."

She turned to face him again, leaning against the bench in front of the kettle rather than return to stand in front of him. "That doesn't mean I pine like a love sick teenager. I just know to be content with what I have, rather than resentful of what I don't."

So he was a disappointment to her. The god could hear it in every word she uttered. He was not what she wanted him to be. It hurt. It stung. The physical distance was a relief. He felt weak and vulnerable in this body. He did not feel at all like the god and prince he was.

"And what is it that you have?" he asked quietly while his own thoughts cut into himself even stronger. As much as he wanted to deny it, he knew it was him who had caused the chaos. He was not even able to remedy his own mistake.

"Someone who seems to care whether I live or die, and has made sure that I have a fighting chance to live, someone who listens to me, sometimes, even when I'm spouting silly mortal sentiment. The father to our daughter." There was no way he could miss the pride in those last four words. A smile even turned up her lips. "There is no label for what we are. And I'm happy that there isn't."

Shannon looked down at her slippered feet. "That's more than I had before, more than I expected to have. You've made me a better person. Because I would have whiled away my hours alone in that apartment, like I did my little house. You make me feel worthy of you. The people in my own time didn't even... " She shook her head.

Loki tried to take in her words. But he did not know how. She used words like 'happy' and 'content' when she clearly wanted more but would not let herself reach for it. He was the one holding her back. His own daughter was always pushing him, always nudging him towards the person she wanted him to be. While Katherine did not have a choice in her relationship to him, Shannon had.

When he had died, this world here had been forgotten to him. He had died alone with a guilt-coated heart. It had torn at him ever since. His mother had returned to their lives. He wanted her to look at his life and be proud of what he had done with it. He wanted his brother to accept him as an equal and for his child to look up at him and carry her name a legacy with pride. But sometimes it seemed unreachable.

"And yet you ache for more, do you not?" he asked quietly.

"No." She answered without hesitation. Her face rose when she did, her eyes meeting his, if he searched. There was no doubt on her face. No room for questioning whether she meant it or not. "That doesn't mean I don't have ambition, or hope. But I like to be surprised."

Shannon caught her lower lip between her teeth and sucked on it a little. "I realize this is a lot. Caring for someone that has an expiration date. You could get hurt if you do more. And I don't want that. I want you to remember me with fondness. Not with pain or resentment."

He had considered this point. Even before he had met Shannon he had scolded his future self for the foolishness of siring a child with a mortal. What had he been thinking?

"To deny that concern would be a lie," he said with carefully chosen words. He was wading into a sea filled with fearsome creatures. It was a dangerous business. "But time need not have the same effect on you as it had on your forefathers." He had toyed with the idea, had tried them out on the two dying mortals. Still, he had never shared it with anyone.

"I can't say I really know how it affected my forefathers. It could be altered already with everything we've done. Are you considering using the stones again? On me?" Well, didn't that speak volumes? A slight smile tugged at her lips, again, he surprised her. "Would you want to be stuck with a silly, sentimental mortal for an undetermined amount of time?" Sure she was making assumptions, on the little that he said. Assuming that it would be the stone's power he tapped into.

But then she checked herself. Sure that it was vain. She had almost gone to him again. Closed the gap. But instead Shannon pushed herself up onto the counter behind her. So that he kept his space.
