The get away had been what she needed. And Shepard found herself not wanting to go back. Not wanting to go back to Derbyshire, or the station. Sure it meant living without a lot of modern conveniences but she also meant not going back to arguments, strain. And dead father-in-law. She felt for the Sullys. Most of them had been there for her, and she them. Though admittedly she could have done a better job. But she'd forgotten all that. Left it back on the station. Left that back in Derbyshire. And she'd enjoyed herself more than she had in years. Sir Pitt had been a perverse old fart, but she'd enjoyed his company. She'd enjoyed telling him her stories, and even if he hadn't been sure he believed her, he had seemed to enjoy them too. She'd forgotten her worries, and maybe Rawdon's brother had not liked her because she wasn't the Godly sort, but he didn't seem to terribly dislike her. She'd made herself useful. And got to shed that damned dress. As the carriage carried them closer, the deeper the dread in her stomach got. "We're going to stop, right?" Shepard said abruptly. Forcing herself out of her thoughts. It was the nineteenth. The twin's birthday. And anything to make the trip that much longer. |
