Who? Rob, Darcy & OPEN
Where? Starting at the park on wheel 3
When? Wednesday morning
What? A riding accident
Open? Yes
Rating? TBD

If Rob were being entirely honest, he and Darcy had been showing off a little bit. Darcy was a funny sort - the kind of posh Englishman that he doubted he'd ever have spoken to back home, but the more time that he spent with him up at the farm, the more he realised that they had more similarities than differences. Or maybe it was just that he was excited to have someone else around who knew horses like he did. Apparently the man liked dogs as well, and that was a lovely new connection. Rob had been so excited to meet the new puppy, and Toby was thrilled with his new friend.

But that was exactly why they were showing off - getting a bit cocky and racing around the parks. He'd missed the fellow while he'd been in Coney Island, and so had Annie. But it had changed very quickly from just a bit of a laugh to being horribly frightening. Bingley had gotten under the horse's hooves, Annie had spooked, and before there was anything either of them could do, Darcy was on the ground. Rob was sure he'd heard a cracking sound, and he'd just hoped that it wasn't a bone.

He'd dismounted himself, and had to try to wrangle the two horses who were all shaken up from the episode, he'd tried whistling for the dogs - Toby came back, but Bingley was sniffing all round his master in a panic. Fortunately, the puppy didn't seem to have been hurt in any way. Eventually, he'd managed to get over to Darcy without horses trampling all over him. He was breathing, but unconscious. The radios were a godsend, and people were apparently coming to help. Rob knew enough about horses to know that you didn't move a thrown rider if they couldn't stand up for themselves.

He kept close watch as he waited, trying not to feel too guilty about it. It was just an accident, no one was to blame. It was just the risk that came with riding, that was all. He'd be fine. He was sure he'd be fine.

Cuddy grabbed a medical kit and went directly to wheel three.   As soon as she got off the elevator, she began running.  "I'm coming."  She called out, hoping Rob would remember and recognize her voice.  He could tell the patient that help was on the way, if he was conscious.  It was a big if. A fall off a horse could be very serious and she doubted the rider had been wearing a helmet.

She entered the park and dropped to her knees by the patient.  "You said his name is Darcy?   How long ago was the fall?"   She asked Rob while checking to see if Darcy was breathing.

Rob felt the relief wash over him as he’ll appeared. He did remember Dr Cuddy, and he would’ve given her. Wave of he hadn’t been holding onto the horses to keep them away from Darcy.

“Aye, well it’s his surname I think, but Darcy’s what he goes by,” he explained, unsure why he was feeling the need to clarify. It hardly mattered. “Just minutes before I radioed. He just went down and he was out cold right away. I think something cracked, like.”

A crack. That could be a fracture; Cuddy hoped it wasn't his skull.   She checked the rest of the patient's vitals and then focused her attention on her supplies, setting down the backboard and getting out the cervical collar.  "I may need your help, Rob.   Will the animals stay back on their own?"    If they started getting in the way, it would make things that much harder and she wanted to make sure she didn't move Darcy until he was properly secured.

Rob watched anxiously as Dr Cuddy got to work. He didn’t like that the man wasn’t awake yet. All the animals really weren’t helping matters, the horses were still stressed from the accident, and the dogs really wanted to help in the most unhelpful ways possible.

“Aye, Jake is on his way to take the animals, he should be here any minute,” Rob explained. He walked the horses back a few more steps and then motioned for them to stay. He managed to get Toby to sit with them, but Bingley was too little to really understand what he was doing. Every time he tried to move toward Darcy one of them would break rank and try to follow it. It was just getting to ridiculous levels when Jake did appear, and after a brief conversation he was able to get the man to take all of the animals back to where they were meant to go. Rob would go and collect the dogs from him later that day.

That exchange done, he went to crouch by Darcy with the doctor. “Sorry, what do you need?”

Cuddy moved to kneel behind her patient's head.   She put the collar on him as Rob and Jake worked on the animals, and then moved the backboard as close to him as she could.   As she worked, she spoke to Darcy, describing her actions in case he had any level of awareness.   She looked up at Rob when he returned.

"I need to move him onto the board. It's a two person job."  She replied.  "I need to maintain in-line stabilization."  As soon as she said it, she realized it might have been too technical.  "I need to hold his head."  She explained.  "I want you you to kneel beside him and put one hand on his shoulder, and the other on his hip.   Then I'll count to three.  On three, we'll slowly and gently roll him onto his side.  Then I'll look at his back, check to see if he's bleeding or has any other hidden injuries.  Then we'll gently and slowly roll him onto the backboard."

"Right," Rob nodded. He knew that it was going to have something to do with moving him, and considering he was a manual labourer by trade, he was definitely ready for that challenge. But then she said some confusing words, and he had no idea what she was on about.

Fortunately, she seemed to realise that as well and offered up a clearer explanation. "Right you are," he nodded, and then put his hands where he had been instructed "Ready when you are," he assured her.

"One, two, three."   Cuddy counted and rolled the patient with Rob's help.  At least he hadn't seemed to have landed on anything sharp when he hit the ground.  No puncture wounds to add to the long list of possible injury.   "And onto the board.  One, two, three."

Once Darcy was on the backboard, she began strapping him in and added head blocks to keep him as secure as possible.   "Can you move the gurney closer?   Then we'll lift him onto it and take him right to the med lab."

Rob did everything as instructed, and as he watched her secure him to the backboard, he felt both thankful that they had someone who knew what they were doing, and also horribly anxious. It all looked terribly serious, and he was having trouble dealing with how quickly things could go wrong. He'd ridden horses all his life, and he knew that accidents were common. It was just frightening, and perhaps he felt a little bit guilty.

"Aye," he nodded, sure that he was white as a sheet as pulled the gurney over as instructed. "Okay," he nodded, moving to help her lift him up onto it.

Cuddy wished she could take the time to comfort Rob and reassure him that she'd deliver the best treatment she could for his friend.  Under the circumstances, every second counted.  "Lift the backboard, don't try to lift him."  Most likely it was an unnecessary instruction, but she had seen people do strange things when emotional.  "One two three."   She counted down and then lifted.

With Darcy safe on the gurney, she began pushing it towards the elevator quickly.   "You can walk with us and talk to him.  He may be able to hear you."   She doubted he would; it was more for Rob's sake than Darcy's.

Once they had him up on the gurney, Rob did automatically walk with them. He wasn't sure if what Cuddy was saying was true, but he did just automatically start talking to him anyway, just on the off-chance.

"You're in good hands now, my man," he assured him softly. "And so are the animals. Bingley's fine, not a scratch on him. Annie's fine, too - she's feeling really bad about it is all," he joked a little.

Once they were into the elevator, Darcy slowly blinked a couple of times. "Doctor-" Rob said, pointing at him in case she hadn't noticed. Darcy didn't really focus on anything, he was just momentarily aware of Rob's voice, and the lights of the elevator, and alarmingly- the fact that he couldn't move. He slipped out of consciousness again after a few seconds.

Cuddy took out her pen light and shone it in her patient's eyes, checking his pupils.  "Darcy?  It's Dr. Cuddy."  Before she could ask any questions to determine his mental status, his eyes slipped shut again.  Damn.

"That's a good sign."   She told Rob, though she wouldn't feel certain until she had him in the medlab and had done imaging scans.   There was only so much she could see with her eyes alone.

Fortunately the elevator ride was short, as if everyone on the station knew to take a different elevator.   Maybe there was some station magic keeping them from pushing the buttons.  Anything was possible.  She pushed the gurney out of the elevator and down the hall.   "Almost there."

Later at the medbay

Ashley knew that by the time she got to the park they would be gone so she made her way to the medbay. She was right, since they were getting there right as she arrived. Henry met her at the door and told her the best thing to do was to wait.

She started to pace in what was considered the waiting room, chewing on her thumbnail nervously. So many different things could go wrong with an accident like this. He could have any number of injuries and she just kept coming up with increasingly worse ones as time passed.

Once they had made it to the medbay, Rob had stuck around for a little while to help. He really did feel partly responsible, and he wanted to be sure that everything was okay before he left. Darcy had kept drifting in and out of consciousness. When he was awake, he was terribly confused and said very little. Eventually, with Dr Cuddy and Dr Morgan working away, Rob knew that he was just getting in the way, so he slipped out into the waiting room.

He hadn't really been planning on sticking around, he'd already asked the doctors to pass on his best wishes once Darcy knew what he was talking about, and he would visit again once he was up to it. But as he walked out, there was the woman he'd spoken to briefly on the radio. She looked sick with worry.

"Hi, lass," he greeted her simply, resisting the urge to just start apologising.

"Hello." Ashley gave him a small smile but it didn't make it to her eyes. "Thank you so much for helping him. Have they said anything?" She started chewing her left thumbnail making the engagement ring visible.

"Oh, it's the least I could do," he said, a little weary. He nodded, just catching sight of the ring and figuring out who she was at last. Of course Darcy had mentioned Miss Sully a few times during their rides.

"Erm... well, Dr Cuddy said that he likely had concussion," he started. It wasn't even something he had heard of, so he didn't know how serious or not that was really. "And he's dislocated something in his spine, I can't remember what they called it, but they're having a look at it now," he told her.

Ashley nodded. She started pacing as she thought about it. Concussion could be bad. Spinal dislocation could cause some problems but nothing that wasn't fixable.

"Has he been unconscious this whole time? When they were talking about his spine did they say a letter and number combination?" She kept pacing as she asked. She was suddenly very thankful she started training as a nurse.

She took it better than he’d expected, and Rob was grateful for that. “No.” he shook his head. “He’s been drifting in and out. He’s awake a wee bit longer each time,” he explained. He would’ve told her he was awake now, but he couldn’t be sure he still was.

“Eh, they did as it happens. I think it was L3, would that sound right?” he asked. He didn’t know if that was good or bad.

Ashley nodded. In and out was definitely better than just out. She smiled again when he answered her second question.

"Yeah, that's right. It's one of the bones in the lower back." She walked over to Rob and turned around, pointing to the spot on her own back. "About here." She sighed. "There could be problems with his legs but if it's just dislocated, that's easily fixable."

Rob nodded in understanding, and smiled a little at her demonstration. It was good that she understood these things, because Rob really knew nothing about medicine. “Oh, yeah, they mentioned that. He can move his feet,” he explained, remembering one of the earlier requests during a moment of consciousness. “They’re doing some sort of scan now before wanting to move him any more.”

Ashley relaxed a little bit. "Moving his feet is a good sign." She nodded. She started pacing again, then stopped and looked at Rob.

"What happened? Annie's usually pretty calm."

“Aye, they seemed to think so,” he nodded in agreement.

When she asked what had happened, that wavelf guilt came again. He’d hoped he might get out the conversation without answering that part, and he also didn’t want to get Darcy in any bother with his missus. She seemed calm and pleasant, but one never could tell.

“Ah... well, it was pretty quick,” he said evasively, and then sighed a little. “We were... probably being daft like, a bit over-confident, you know? It’s not the same riding here as in an open field. The horses know it’s not quite right and spook more easily,” he explained. He’d seen it in his own, usually very docile sholtie.

Ashley sighed a little and nodded. "It is pretty weird when you're not used to it." She started pacing again. She'd have to go check on Annie later. She moved closer and put a hand on his shoulder.

"It'll be okay." She nodded.

“Aye, it is that. Plenty of good about it too, though,” he shrugged. Really, the accident could’ve happened anywhere. It was just one of those bits of bad luck.

He chuckled softly and shook his head. “I reckon I’m meant to be the one saying that to you,” he admitted.

“That’s good, I’m glad for that at least,” he smiled warmly. “I hope he makes a quick recovery. You’ll let me know how he is? I’ll pop back down and see him when he’s up to it,” he told her, friendly as ever. “Oh- And Annie is fine, like. Jake came and took the horses back to their stable, but I’ll jump down now and make sure she’s not feeling badly on it,” he said. And he really would, he’d explain the situation to Annie like he would a human being.

Ashley nodded. "Of course. I'll call you as soon as I have details if you'd like." Hopefully the recovery wouldn't take too long. She gave him another little smile.

"I'm sure she'll be glad to know he's going to be okay. Thank you." Growing up around very smart animals she didn't question Annie's ability to understand.

"Aye, that would be grand. And if there's anything I can do in the meantime, just let me know," he insisted.

He was glad that she didn't think him strange for the way he talked about the horses. "She was awful worried," he nodded. "Oh, and the little pup? He's fine as well. Jake took him off me, I'm not sure where he went after that, but he's in safe hands regardless."

"Dinna fash yersel, lass," he said without realising how ridiculously Doric he was being until it was out his mouth. He gave her a bit of a smile, and translated in a soft, caring tone. "Don't worry too much," he explained. He reached out and gave her shoulder a little squeeze. "See you soon," he said, giving her a nod before he left.
