Who: Shannon and Loki
Where: Cuban wilderness
What: Powers activate
When: Monday is a day for burning things
Rating: TBD
Open: no
Status: On going

Shannon placed the backpack, full of important things-Water, and plenty of it, sunscreen, a change of clothes- on the ground at the base if a large and beautiful banyon tree. She had the hopes that she wouldn't accidentally set the bag on fire. The positive thoughts would save it.

Shannon had outfitted herself in a pair of well fitted shorts, a top that clung to her like a sports bra would, but it was longer, and a pair of nondescript athletic shoes, all in different shades of green that complemented each other. It was too hot for black. She was ready to conquer the raging powers that had built up inside her. But she wasn't sure now to purposely go about doing that. So she stretched her whole body. Bending forward to touch her toes, squatting, a few lunges.

She knew Loki wasn't impressed with any of them. But she didn't skimp out, she was still mortal, and didn't have any intention to hurt herself because she hadn't been ready. And when her body quit protesting at the straining movements she turned and gave him a bright smile. "Thank you for being patient."

"Of course," Loki said. "My corporal form never feels distorted." He barely remembered his first ever change. He had been a child, playing with magic that had the potential to rip him apart. Everything had been new to him, everything had been an adventure and a wonder. He remembered his mother's delight even more than his own. "It can take time to adjust... to learn how to use a shape to the best of its abilities. But it is nothing more than to learn how to use a tool."

It was different with the ghost now. The loss it had taken to gain it had alienated him from its feel. It was no proper body. It left him a stranger to the world. He did not feel like himself any longer. Only a shadow was what was left.

"Using them is simple. Like closing and opening a fist." She held her arm out from her body and did just that, and the wing followed. Just the left side. The wing closed and spread in time with her hand. It hadn't taken a moment to figure what part of her was different

Shannon turned toward him, sensing the turmoil then. The little dragon wings folded together. They weren't what was important just then. He wore that mask so well. She stepped toward him. "I don't know what I mean to you, Loki. But I know what you mean to me. It is more than lust, I hope you know that. And it isn't just because you're a god, and what you can do for me. To me." She took another step closer. "You mean more to me than the man that fathered Katherine. You've... treated me better in this short time I've been here, than he had in the near decade that I knew him. And seemingly without motive. I can't say for sure it is without motive, because you hide yourself well. But I feel... like you care whether I live or die." Where the former, didn't. "I'm not asking for confession. I just... I hope my words are making you feel better." She didn't want him to dwell on what they couldn't do, what he couldn't do right then.

Loki huffed a snort when he started to sense into which direction the conversation was going. He tensed on the inside, eyes lowering to the ground. He did not know what to do with all those words. Hardly anyone had ever spoken similar words and meant them. Could he even trust Shannon's? He pushed the thought aside.

"I don't think that is what we came here for," he said quietly, drawing back just a little. He glanced up at her. The corners of his lips tugging upwards. "Or is it that you want to test if notions of sentiment provide an identical effect?" A cheap diversion.

Shannon knew she had failed to sooth him. She wasn't good at charm she was better off being blunt. "Yes. I was testing to see if maybe the wings would go faery if I curbed the lust and attempted to be charming. Or maybe something equally as... I don't know." It was a good shovel to bury her failure. So she went with it.

"Was there any change? Perhaps a unicorn horn or something whimsical like that? Or was I too poor at it and it failed completely?"

Of course, it hadn't been real. He smiled at the realisation. She was becoming good at her skills, he had almost believed her. He took another step back. Another quirk of his lips as his mind played catch-up with what had happened. "I cannot see any. Maybe we should stay with the lust and fear. They are less..." He tilted his head and lowered his gaze once more. "...deceitful."

Her little pitiful wings drooped, less deceitful. She couldn't imagine two words being more painful. "Of course. But fear is impossible to conjure. It only comes when one of the people I care about most, are in danger. It is not related to self preservation at all." Because, really, how much self preservation did she have anyway.

Shannon plopped to sit on the ground. "Lets shift focus off of me. Surely we didn't just come out here for my sake alone." She drew her knees up and rest her arms on them. Her wings lay limp down her back.

Her reaction gnawed at him. There was something he was missing but the god with the silvertongue dropped the thought. What had been said, had been said. There was no point to dwell on it, was there?

"A good idea. It will provide you with time to rest." With that he shifted. His body took on its ethereal form, pale and slightly transparent. He stepped forward as his gaze searched for a suitable object.

"Yes and maybe they will just go away on their own." Or she'd be able to figure out what about the wings was different from the rest of her body and banish them.

Shannon bridged her hands together between her knees and watched him. Curiosity masking the pain.

He glanced back at her over his shoulder. A shadow flickered over his pale features. "I am sure you will be able to control them soon enough," he said softly. A token of guilt? Empathy? It was a hard thing to discern for any spectator.

A rock was the first focus of his training. Loki stretched out his hands towards it. The powers of the ghost still lacked honing. He had only ever trained alone before and the audience was not something he was used to. It strengthened his urge to succeed. He reached out towards it with his magic but he struggled to cause a reaction. It shook slightly under his influence and powers. Nothing else.

Shannon gave him a little smile. She wasn't sure what she had expected of this trip, but she hardly expected everything to be solved at once. To know the base of all that she'd gained so far, even.

All that vanished as she watched him though. Watched his face, and the determination there. The determination to get the rock to move. Her gaze shifted from his face to the rock, and saw it shake. "Close your eyes." She whispered. "Close your eyes so that it's only you, and the rock." Afraid to talk above a whisper and truly disturb him. What was a rock to the all mighty Loki, she wanted to cheer. But she didn't.

Loki tilted his head ever so much. It was the only indication that he had heard her talk. Silently, however, he listened to her and closed his eyes. There had always been a resistance against advice, especially when it came from a mortal. Too many fools thought they knew better than him and urged him to try things he had already attempted many times before. People overlooked his true potential easily. He was the younger prince. The weak son. He was sick of the image.

But here and now he listened. It was a compliment of the highest regard. A small step towards a partnership, whatever that might entail. With the rest of his sensations cut out, he tried again. It was harder to make the connection. He reached out into the dark. But once he could feel it, it was easy to concentrate on with the world around him shut out. He could feel its shudders. He built up a force and unleashed it.

Crack! The rock had crashed into the trees behind it. Loki ripped open his eyes. "Hmm..." was all he said.

Shannon felt an odd sense of accomplishment when the rock crashed into the trees behind it. He had listened to her. Which was surprising, and damning all the same. It meant she was a distraction, not a help. Where as he had been the opposite for her.

She sighed softly and slowly stood up. In her distraction she had neglected to notice that her wings were no longer there. She hadn't been focused on them, so they had been able to fade as quickly as they'd come. "I think maybe I should go back home. As much as I'd like to stay here, it would be selfish of me if I did."

His head snapped towards her. The rock was forgotten. Lips twitched and he let his arm sink. "And why would you say that?" he asked softly. Quiet voice. Vulnerable. He wanted to overshadow it with a jibe. A quip. Anything. But he held back. This was Katherine's mother... this was a woman who still saw a worth in him even though he was dead.

"Because you were able to get the rock to do what you wanted after you closed your eyes. I'm a distraction." That sounded vain and that thought alone caused Shannon to shake her head. "Not that I think it's simply because I'm me, I think anyone else would probably be a distraction. Though the stupid part of me would be incredibly gleeful if I were the only one you couldn't ignore." Stupid because she wasn't sure if it was sexy, or dangerous that she garnered his attention, and she couldn't find the reason to care which it was. After all, didn't pain lay down that road? Hadn't she learned that already?

Loki stared at her. There were flaws in her logic. His eyes danced from side to side as he tried to figure out her agenda. "Ah, but I was able to do it after I closed my eyes..." He had his head cocked, waiting for an answer. Anything that gave him another hint.

"I was thinking if I go, that maybe you wont have to close your eyes. That you'll be able to focus on whatever you want without distraction, without closing your eyes. Because it really will be you and the object you're trying to... magic." Did he not want her to go? Is that what this was? Shannon bit down on her lower lip and attempted something a little bold. Or something she considered bold. "Do you want me to stay?" It was a risk. Because surely he didn't need her.

Now that was a question that brought him unease. Vulnerability was nothing he was comfortable with. But what if he was erased for good. Death came easy. Death came unexpected. Thor's last words to him rang clear in his mind.

His gaze had dropped as he mulled his over and fought a battle with himself. He picked at his fingers while the war inside turned towards a strange victory. "I do not mind if you linger for longer," he answered quietly. "My failures are not your fault." A swallow. "I myself am I tyro with these new powers."

Though he dropped his gaze, she watched him, watched as he picked his fingers. She hadn't meant to make him uncomfortable, but she got her answer. A little smile tugged her lips. "Alright, I'll stay, but if I become a bother you must send me away."

Shannon sat down more comfortably than she had before. Her legs folded in a relaxed lotus position. "And I wouldn't say you have failed yet. The first time the rock did move. And you are the great and powerful Loki, God of Mischief and Magic. I'm confident you will master these powers as you have all the others." She couldn't help but hope that gave his ego a bit of a boost.

He relaxed his hand as he became far too aware of the signs he was sending. Whatever sight had inspired such a assurance was not one he wanted to be. Of course, he would master them. He was a Prince of Asgard. He was one of the most powerful sorcerers of his universe. And, yet, his death had put a dent into his confidence.

He stayed quiet and instead focused on his task. Once again, he shut his eyes and concentrated. The grasp on the rock came easier. Instead of pushing it back, he pulled it towards him. The two foot high boulder rushed right through him. The god needed to snuff out his instincts to not jump away.

Before she could quiet it Shannon sucked in a surprised breath, as the rock rushed toward him, only to pass right through. Shannon clapped her hand over her mouth to keep the squawk of surprise as muffled as she could. She hadn't expected that, though she should have. There was no forgetting the man she loved was a ghost.

There was no forgetting that terrible night.

Loki quirked a smile. Good. His eyes flickered towards Shannon at the noise of surprise. He chuckled a low laugh. "Now, there is nothing to worry about. I can hardly die a second time." But he could make sure that his skills would match that of Ebony Maw. It was not only Thanos they needed to defeat.

"I know. But..." Her hand dropped over her heart. She was sure it was going to leap out of her chest. "I'm surprised I didn't cause a mini bonfire." Only people she cared about were able to work up that fear. Especially if there was absolutely nothing she could do to save them.

Shannon rubbed her hands over her face, with a little groan. She'd need to get used to that. She then shook it off. "Sorry."

Another laugh. "In that case... this might be an exercise for the both of us." Mirth glinted in his eyes at the prospect of evoking a reaction that would have the Cuban fire brigade worried.

He closed his eyes again but this time he focused on a tree. It was a small one but bigger than anything he had ever moved before. He frowned in concentration as he aimed to establish a grasp.

Oh she knew that look. He was up to something now. Not that she thought he would put her in danger. She knew he wouldn't. Not intentionally. But she hadn't a clue what he was looking at.

Shannon was sure he was intent on moving something by the frown. Already she could feel the anxiety of not knowing. "I'm preemptively apologizing now." She whispered. So not to break his concentration.

Another chuckle. The tree wavered and shook as roots tried to cling to the earth. He stepped a couple of steps between Shannon and the tree. Invisible while an illusion remained in his old place. He could feel it coming lose but at first did not want to show it.

When he was ready, the illusion vanished and his real image appeared. The tree rushed towards him and at the same time Shannon. It soared right through him and crashed only a few meters next to his lover. Of course, he had known this. Of course, he was in control. Nonetheless, he felt relieve that his plan had not led to any harm.
