I think he knows him, but not exactly well. But he's also incredibly intelligent and will probably grasp this weird multi-verse faster than most of us did. I've counted a minimum of five already.

Nate, your dad and I have never exactly been close but if I know anything about him, it's that he loves you kids more than anything in the world. He'll know you need some time away. Nat is going to be around the house for him if he needs anything and they both know how to get ahold of you if they need you.

This isn't your fault, buddy, and he knows that.
