"Do you still hate me?"

Severus resisted the compulsion to kill the conversation, took a breath and replied, "Hate you?  I hate the way your hair gleams gold in the sunlight, I hate the glow in your eyes, I hate the way you smile and how I can't stop thinking about it.  I hate the way I think of you before I go to sleep, and the way I'll wake still thinking of you.  When I take my last breath, I'll be thinking of how much I hate you, Remus Lupin."

Remus stared, astonished.  "Severus," he whispered, and then began kissing him, kissing him as though Severus had confessed to love.

"Severus, how lovely to see you. Come in?"

Severus thrust the potion vial at Remus. "Here Lupin, your Wolfsbane."

The werewolf looked fit and healthy. Almost handsome, Severus thought. Since when had the werewolf's eyes sparkled with golden glints? Did sunlight always burnish his grey hair into the brightest gold and silver? And was his smile always so warm and inviting? Had everything changed, or had Severus changed?

"Are you offering me a cup of your infernally bitter tea, Lupin?"

"My best brew… for starters. Would you like a cup?"

"Yes."

Severus crossed the threshold and walked through the door.

Severus groaned. If only he didn't feel like such a fool! Apparating away without explanation – the bloody werewolf must think he had gone mad.

Still, Severus had faced more difficult situations. Voldemort was worse than this. Much worse. This was a simple delivery of Wolfsbane to a werewolf. Quite straight-forward. A matter of Apparating to London, knocking on a door, exchanging a few words as a matter of courtesy, and leaving. Nothing challenging or difficult.

Calm and resolved, Severus picked up the flask and Apparated away.

He thought his heart might leap from his chest when the front door opened.

Severus could barely think over the wild pounding of his heart. He hoped the werewolf could not hear his heartbeat. He licked his dry lips nervously, "Does that mean you're not gay?"

Remus laughed, "As gay as a maypole." His smile faded, as his eyes met Severus's. "Severus, are you…?"

"Going now? Yes, I must go," and he Apparated instantly, without another thought.

He arrived back in his dungeon rooms, mercifully unsplinched. He couldn't understand his reactions; his heart racing, his breathlessness. If it weren't so absurd, he might even think he had… feelings for the wolf. Of course not.

"It's kind of you to visit. I do miss Sirius. But we weren't lovers – he wasn't my mate, you know."

Severus was certain his mouth was hanging open unappealingly. He snapped it shut – not that he wanted to appeal to the bloody werewolf.

"But you were always together. You acted like a couple," Severus spluttered.

"Well, we were very close. And we only had each other at the end. But Sirius wasn't interested in sex or intimacy after Azkaban – he was very marked by imprisonment," Remus sadly said.

Severus attributed his suddenly pounding heart to his surprise at Remus's words.

Notes: continues on from "Acting out of duty, not concern – part 1.

He was acting entirely out of duty, not concern. Those idiots of the Order couldn't be trusted to care for a pet toad – it would serve them right if they had to clear up the remains of a rotting werewolf corpse. But Severus Snape did not forget his duty, or overlook his commitments.

And if it was not the Full Moon, what did that matter? Duty could not be dictated by the vagaries of a lunar cycle.

Confronting the werewolf's surprised but pleased greeting, Severus ungraciously muttered "Someone had to make certain you had not died, mourning your worthless mate."

He was not interested in Black's former lover.  The thought of touching anything Black had touched was repugnant.  And witnessing the werewolf mourning made him nauseated.  Better to simply ignore the whole distasteful situation, and send the Wolfsbane by owl.

Bottling the potion, he reflected, perhaps he should deliver this month's doses – some-one ought to check on the beast, ensure he was still alive.

Severus was surprised; Lupin didn't look too bad, he thought.  Better than could be expected, really.  Freshly bathed and clothed, almost handsome, eyes brightening when Severus entered.

Still, he was not interested in Black's former lover.

Challenge 150 – Snape vs. Lupin – Snape's perspective: "A Mutually Satisfying Arrangement"

It was all very practical.  Fantastic sex with a surprisingly attractive lover.  Conversation, companionship, carnal pleasures – a mutually satisfying arrangement.

There was no need for frivolous romance, or foolish declarations – no expectation this arrangement would be required to delve into murky emotional territory, where pathways lead to mire or peril, into those swamps and marshlands of the heart.

Severus had himself entirely convinced of the practicality of his decision, the pragmatic reasoning behind his choice, only to find his gaze caught in eyes the colour of amber and sweet honey, more potent than any elixir and sweeter than any draught.

#148 -- trust

PG-13

Familiar only with touch accompanied by pain, and caresses that tore skin and flesh, Severus did not like sex.  It tore open forgotten wounds, ripped the skin off healed scabs; it signified pain, a loss of control.

Severus never chose vulnerability: his hand or a body-for-rent was adequate.

~

Taught powerlessness by the wrenching and tearing of every month's full moon; Remus hated to relinquish control.  His own scarred hand and spiraling fantasy took care of unmet needs.

~

As surprising and unexpectedly joyful as the sunrise-glistening-frost of icy mornings was their trust in surrendering to their passionate sexual collisions.
