#138 - mistakes - "The Light of His Countenance"

Title: The Light of His Countenance
Word Count: (100)
Rating: G
Challenge: mistakes
Characters: Remus/Severus
Notes: Inspired by Psalm 43:5 (I've been listening to a setting of it all week).

Their world had never forgiven Snape for cheating death, and there had been many incidents that would have driven a lesser man beyond despair. The silences, the sneers, the sotto voce judgments -- he had endured far too much for such things to matter.

Yet, they did, and the last time Remus had seen Severus so cast down and disquieted, it had been another careless insult -- one that had somehow struck so deep he saw his entire life as a colossal mistake.

Remus said nothing, but handed Severus a mug of tea.

Severus rewarded him with a wan but genuine smile.
