Also, my heartfelt appreciation to [info]jadzialove for the excellent beta reading, to [info]whitecotton for help with Scottish-izing my Scottish, and to [info]sestra_prior for her assistance with British questions. Team Snitch, thanks for your input, your team spirit, and your love of Snarry. It's been a privilege and honor to cavort with you all and wield my big stick. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't express my appreciation to Rudyard Kipling for his masterpiece, Captains Courageous.

I'm not a huge fan of crossovers so I started this with some trepidation...allayed, of course, by the fact that *you* are the author and I'll read anything you write and probably love it *vbeg* I found that, unlike many, you didn't overemphasize the connection/crossover points between the series. (I'm sure it helps that I love Hamish Macbeth!) The only downside was the Julian connection seemed a little contrived - more forced than your usual. The quotes however were absolutely brilliantly woven in and I loved them. Outstanding work as usual.

Glad you liked it overall. You'll note that Crossover wasn't one of my genres, as this wasn't a crossover. I could've easily substituted the name 'Kyle Klach' for Hamish's, and 'Plockton' for 'Lochdubh', and no one would've been the wiser, because I was very careful to actually make these appear as if they could be eccentric, but original, concepts. I'm not a huge fan of crossovers either, and intentionally avoided the genre.

Julian was a shock, and came near the end of the story. Shocks to readers often appear contrived. I had one other reader who was disappointed by this development, but it stemmed more from a desire to see Severus and Harry only needing each other than the feeling that it didn't fit.

Thanks so much for reading; I'm glad you liked the book element; that was great fun for me. Appreciate that you read, and that you stopped by to tell me!

So many things to love about this story. I'm always a sucker for people reading aloud to each other so of course I was going to love this. Snape as an audiobook recorder is such a great idea. Also loved Harry's job and kept waiting for a scene with Snape (and Harry probably) sitting in his beautifully carved rocking chair. I'll just keep imagining that part myself.

The really great part though is the emotional arc that weaves through the whole story. Exploring what happens after Harry is rejected by Snape is really interesting and I was so moved through all its parts. When Harry finally cried so did I.

And then there was more to come! The plot twist with Harry's father still being alive and not being James was a big surprise, for me anyway but you handled it realistically. I actually can't wait to read it again. Congrats on another great story!

Haaaa, at least Snape got to sit in a Rustic Roc,er in Harry's shop, though. How about we imagine them, then, having a ritual where Snape does have Harry in his lap in that chair in front of a fire?

I was hoping that it was clear that it was Snape's treatment of Harry that proved the catalyst in a long line of things in the boy's life to make him feel lost. But many of the other things had been nameless influences from his childhood; how much more damaging it proved to be when it had a face and a name, a person who'd become cherished? So glad you caught that arc, and those were good tears for Harry; hope they were for you.

The audiobooks and Julian were things that drove me nuts: the former because I became research-obsessive, the latter because I had to make it sound plausible. Again, I appreciate the feedback on those two.

I'm so pleased you took the time to read, and for your thoughtful comments, and am humbled that you'd read it again. It means a great deal to hear a reader say that, so thanks.:)

When I was writing this, it was Rickman's voice that I heard in my head, although he's not the Snape I see. I'm so pleased to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the investment of time to read this--I appreciate you dropping by to tell me you liked it.

Oh, a lovely story!
I adore the ones where Snape and Harry are just missing each other's meaning, or, as here, Snape's doing absolutely the wrong thing for Harry's benefit.
I loved that you had a previous encounter that they both had to accept wasn't right. I loved the proper, loving encounter, and then the secrets start to unfold. I think you wrote Harry's hurt search for what he believed he deserved very well. I wasn't wholly convinced by the 'Harry's father' bit of the storyline, but your Snape - Harry interaction was so beautiful it didn't really matter.
Gorgeous, and I, too, wish to hear Severus' take on a Gloucester fisherman's accent - I love Captains Courageous!

Snarry games: Sex, lies and audiotapes

Harry bit his lower lip. "Listen, if he does show up today, you wouldn't just open the box and settle things without me here…and then leave, would you?" he asked anxiously. "I wouldn't want to come back and find that you've gone."

Severus tried to resist the feeling, but it was there all the same: he was touched.

--------
"That," Severus said in a low voice at Harry's ear, "is what you deserve. Each and every time. Don't forget it. Here endeth the lesson," he murmured.

And for reasons that Severus understood perfectly, Harry cried.
------
Sliding his arms up, Severus pulled Harry out of his chair, and after a slightly awkward moment, had him in his lap. "We both get what we want," he murmured at his ear. "And deserve."

These quotes barely scratch the surface of why I so loved this fic. Tender, heartbreaking, sweet, with Snape's sarcasm intact. And, and, and...Jullian! *cries*

Yes, my eyes were bright with tears so many times as I read this. A thousand thanks to you for writing this soon-to-be Snarry classic.

Wow! (she said, finally starting to read the Games' stories after more than a month) What an intricately woven, creative story which, by the way, I totally would have known was yours even without a name, if only for the wonderfully detailed descriptions of niche interests (like the recording of audiobooks). And such a perfect ending. Well done.

I can see I'm going to have to track down some Hamish MacBeth to read, plus dig out my cassettes of Alan Rickman reading Hardy's Return of the Native. Rickman's not my visual Snape, but it was impossible not to hear him when reading this. Harry's self-destructive tendencies make total sense (and I'm always up for a little Harry torture, don't ask me why) and Snape's blind contribution to Harry's situation. Plus, I'm always a fan of Albus-meddling-from-beyond-the-grave fics. But mostly, I always love the wealth of detail you put into your fics and the slow but never boring build-up and always with an emotional wallop. Go Capitan!

I loved this! I can only imagine the amount of research you must have done. Everything about the locations and Harry and Severus's jobs felt very real - at least to this layperson. (Also loved your Faraday cages to eliminate magical interference!) I'm also a huge fan of audiobooks so I especially loved your descriptions of Severus's process. I really liked how you showed us Harry and Severus's journey and the way you brought them together. I'm a little ambivalent about Julian/Roger, but only now after finishing the story - while I was reading it, I'd completely suspended all disbelief. Even now I don't find it less believable than the actual epilogue.

The Severus and Harry in my mind when I read the HP books and fanfic don't much resemble their movie counterparts, but I couldn't help but imagine Alan Rickman's voice doing the book excerpts, especially after you threw Shakespeare's sonnets in there. Severus has some fantastic range in the books he reads, and his company has great taste in books :)

Thanks for the great read!

p.s. Great title :)

Thought I'd commented on this and realized I had not.

The phrase "well of loneliness" wove throughout this fic. Harry's self destructive journey was especially heart breaking. I don't think I have ever disliked Albus more - his meddling cost Harry more than just a happy childhood - it nearly destroyed him.

I liked the profession you chose for Severus - I have listened to enough book on tapes to understand the incredible difficulty the voice actor performs - the wrong voice can easily ruin the listening experience.

Severus' interaction with his cat were priceless; there is no doubt who rules that household.

Well done.

This story caught me up and wouldn't let me go until I reached the end. I adored Severus and his cat. And the way that Harry and Severus interacted.

My only complaint, and it's minor in comparison to how much I loved about the story, is how easily Harry forgave Dumbledore (and even Severus) for turning his life upside-downin the name of the war against Voldemort. I understand why you did it that way, but I have to believe that some day Harry will erupt again over it all.

But really, as I said, it's a minor complaint for a story that I enjoyed reading.

Another gorgeous piece! I loved Harry's vulnerability and Severus' approach to dealing with & healing Harry. Great quotes too. Merlin knows I'd love to hear him reading those books!! Interesting twist with Julian. I'd put this fic right up there with Anniversary and Second Best (both of which I madly love). Happy future writings! ^_^

This was a most satisfying reading experience, both emotionally and Snarry-wise. It’s not that I don’t appreciate fancy genres or intricate plots, but there’s nothing like a story where Severus and Harry actually spend time together (for whatever reason) and talk. I loved how they did just that in this story, how they gradually got closer to each other and approached the crux of the matter while conducting their ”forced adventure.”

What with their past experiences in canon and the events after the war as you described them, including the heartbreaking ”incident,” there were plenty of fascinating topics to tackle. Besides, the important issues, such as deserving, belonging and loneliness, were easy to relate to, because they concern everybody. And as much as I loved all the talking, it was Severus’ hands-on lesson in deserving that took my breath away. Not only was it incredibly sensual and touching, but it made me realize how much the ”incident” had affected him.

I also loved the way the ”interruptions” by Hamish, the shinty matches and the trips to their homes gave impetus to more and more intimate conversations, confessions and interaction. At the same time, they provided a welcome distraction from the often serious, intense discussions. OTOH, I think I almost resented Julian at first for turning up just when Severus and Harry had the opportunity to bask in happiness for a while. But he was such a jovial guy I couldn’t hold a grudge against him. :)

Lastly, I really enjoyed learning about the audiobook business and about the books that Severus was recording, and although I suffer from similar gaps in education as Harry did, I never felt like I was missing out on something, despite the central role Captains Courageous played. It was beautifully written and poignant. When Harry stopped to listen to Severus’ reading for the first time, I cried. Also, I was happy to see that despite his problems, Harry had found his niche in woodworking. What a lovely connection to his father, as well!

Beautiful. And for some reason this touched me the most: "He had no regrets that he'd never have a child to pass things on to, but he mourned that what was essentially him would be lost, would remain unknown, like a beautiful clearing in a wood never seen by human eyes."

I've only been reading real Snarry for a week but if this level of brilliance is common (unlikely), I'll be shipping for some time. I was so surprised by how much I loved these characters. This vulnerable Harry worked so well. The twist didn't seem cheesy or unrealistic at all. This is a fantastic piece of work that was definitely worth the read.
