The [info]snarry_games have the best Mods in fandom—they've worked so hard for years to give all of us such a supportive environment in which to play—thank you! Also, my heartfelt appreciation to [info]jadzialove for the excellent beta reading, to [info]whitecotton for help with Scottish-izing my Scottish, and to [info]sestra_prior for her assistance with British questions. Team Snitch, thanks for your input, your team spirit, and your love of Snarry. It's been a privilege and honor to cavort with you all and wield my big stick. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't express my appreciation to Rudyard Kipling for his masterpiece, Captains Courageous.

Summary: Belonging and deserving, needing and wanting—desires of the human heart that Severus and Harry must face when they're forced to the little village of Lochdubh to settle a very late codicil of Albus Dumbledore's will.

Oh my god! This was the most satisfying read ever. Really. It just hit everything I love about Harry and Severus as adults. It's brilliant and insightful, moving and funny, bittersweet and hopeful. Gorgeous, gorgeous story! Team Mom, this was fantastic!

Snape reading audiobooks is such a great idea. Would be great listening to Alan Rickmans voice reading classics.

A wonderful story! A little sad sometimes and my heart broke with our messed up Harry but then you made it all better in the end.
A mystery and surprise that I really liked and I think I have fallen a little in love with your Snape.
Always doing the right thing.
It was so sad that what for him was really right, taking the time to find himself and to live his own life for once, was so wrong for Harry.
A very emotional story for me. Wonderfully done!

Love it, love it!!! Another awesome story from you! Wow, Snape audiobooks, I never thought I'd really want an audiobook, but if he was recording books, I would buy them all! I really liked this story--I liked the mess Harry got himself into (well, not liked, but thought it was an interesting and apt characterization) and how they worked their way out of it. It was great--I love it when the two damaged people get whole with each other.

Also great was the scene where Snape gave Harry an object lesson "This is what you deserve...every time." Just awesome.

And that Harry had a family after all was just beautiful, and I liked how you brought it about through Dumbledore's machinations. 10 years was a little excessive for making Harry wait for it, though...did he really have to go through another horrible period in his life with no comfort? Poor Harry, he is such a messianic figure--all the hurt and troubles of the world on his slim shoulders. Good thing Snape's there to pick up the pieces...

Wonderful job!

What a wondrous post-war story!! I love the way you slide effortlessly between a character telling about a memory from a scene with someone else, and the actual scene, and back to present again. I don't know if I make myself clear... Oh well, I absolutely adore your fic, tenter and bitter-sweet, and so well written. The end is heart wrenching, but in a good way. All in all, I'd say: WOW!!!

*Sigh* That was just beautiful. The pacing, the writing style, the plotting, the characterizations(both canon and non-canon) were all so engaging. I love the thought of Severus collecting driftwood and recording audiobooks. I love that Harry's passion is wood-working, and that we later find out his father builds boats. I love that Snape is so clear headed about Harry's issues, but in denial about his own, which is such a typical, human reaction. I love that Severus is a cat person(and Mercutio is wonderful) and that Harry has always wanted a dog!
I especially love the happy ending for both Severus and Harry.
Harry's struggles to figure out what to do, now that his externally driven roles have been resolved, feels so believable, as does Snape's achieving a peace after being relieved of the burden of two masters. The use of the various books as analogy was very clever. Your stories never disappoint, and this one is brilliant.

So good, so damn good.

It took me three days to read it. But it was worth every minute i spent on.

Im still overwhelmed from the sheer rightness of the story and the charakters, and... all...

This was so well plotted and satisfying; a lovely long read and engaging mystery.
You made me want to read Captains Courageous. And I love Mercutio. All stories are bettered with the inclusion of a feisty feline.

Such a great story! It deals with all the psychological issues that Harry & Snape would have. Belonging and need with these two damaged men, and how that would play out. You handled the characters wonderfully. Albus, of course, up to machinations from beyond the grave.

When you first mentioned Snape recording audio books, I instantly thought of Rickman's recordings of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Oh what a voice!

Weaving this story with Captains Courageous added a nice depth. The time alone forced Harry and Snape to reconnect and work out some issues. And introducing a lost brother! An addition to the mystery I didn't expect. Harry's cup runneth over!

I really enjoyed reading this!

This story was just so mesmerizing. All the stunning details, the characterizations, how it flowed. Just beautiful. I must confess that I Harry's pain made me cry. Thank you for crafting such a deep and wonderful story.

BTW, I loved both Harry and Severus's hobbies/jobs.

I loved this story. Especially the little things, like Mercutio, and Harry and Julian both being woodworkers. The word count intimidated me at first, but this was worth every word, and it left me wanting more!!!

Aww such a sweet story, my favorite Games story so far :) It's so nice to see Harry and Severus get such a happy ending for a change, to get exactly what they each "want" "need" and "deserve!"

This is so perfect that I can't even find appropriate words. Um... I loved every word of every sentence, I loved Mercutio and Severus making audiobooks and Harry crafting rocking chairs, I loved the perfectly fitting quotes and Julian (what a surprise he was!), loved Lochdubh and its inhabitants; and most of all your beautiful writing style and the little details that paint vivid pictures in the readers' minds and that make the story so real.
One of the most beautiful stories I've ever read; thank you for writing it.

I've been out of town the last couple days, but I did the responsible thing and saved your fic for my commute.

Let it be said that I love your stories. And I think I figured out part of my attraction. I love how emotionally broken your Harrys are. Your Harry didn't come out of the war fine-and-dandy as though none of the countless horrible things that'd happened to him gave him pause. Here, I love how the mystery of Harry's failed relationships is revealed. I love how Snape tries to put him back together. Also! How wonderful and creative and perfect is Snape as a reader!

lasdjfsdal The whole thing! I love your little town; I love Snape talking to his cat; I love the complexity of wanting and needing; And most of all, I loved their past and their future. Thank you! <3

I was fine until just before the One Month Later part. I got all teary right before that. I was just so happy! I feared the worst at Severus' words. I already had plans to throttle him and you - thank goodness that was averted! :)

Wondreful, wondreful story. It took me two full days to read and I enjoyed every minute. Thank you!

OK, just had a thought--I've never watched Hamish MacBeth, but how about this for a crossover--Father Ted/Snarry? Have you seen that show? I would love to see Snape dealing with the shenanigans on Craggy Island, not to mention dealing with the endless offers of cups of tea from Mrs. Doyle. Anyway, that was a random silly thought you might appreciate!

I'm also inspired to read Captains Courageous! I haven't read Kipling in years and years. I loved how you created the analogies between the stories Severus read and his thoughts and the arcs of his and Harry's lives. Just great.

Well, I finally got a chance to read this; I am sorry it took me so long.

I think, of all the stories you have told, this is probably your best, yet will be the one I won't ever read again. It's not that I dislike it--to say so would be an insult by implying something so... insipid or banal as 'liking' it. In fact, as I struggle to clearly express what I'm wearing on my sleeve at the moment, ascribing any emotion seems inadequate; maybe later, when I catch my breath, I can find better words. As to never reading it again? I won't have to, the story is indelibly etched in my mind's eye, and it won't ever be leaving me. Instead it will join a few other stories I've hoarded in my heart's library, a hidden place where I keep those things that have profoundly changed me. I can't say, exactly, why yours affected me so, I just know it has and will continue to do so each time I think of it. For this rare experience, you have my gratitude.

love you...

Great read, thank you! Loved Hamish and the villagers, and Snape's audiobooks, and him reading to Harry. The reading scenes are so touching.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but it seems there's an audiobook of 'The Return of the Native' narrated by the one and only Alan Rickman. Have you heard that one, by any chance? I'd love to try it out, but it's a tad expensive.

I cannot tell you how much I loved this story. Snape's character was so wonderfully written, Harry so terribly broken by his past. I love the detail, the town, Julian, Mercutio.

This is definitely one of those stories that I'll be reading again, but then, with your writing, that's the norm.

Wonderful job!
