The [info]snarry_games have the best Mods in fandom—they've worked so hard for years to give all of us such a supportive environment in which to play—thank you! Also, my heartfelt appreciation to [info]jadzialove for the excellent beta reading, to [info]whitecotton for help with Scottish-izing my Scottish, and to [info]sestra_prior for her assistance with British questions. Team Snitch, thanks for your input, your team spirit, and your love of Snarry. It's been a privilege and honor to cavort with you all and wield my big stick. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't express my appreciation to Rudyard Kipling for his masterpiece, Captains Courageous.

Summary: Belonging and deserving, needing and wanting—desires of the human heart that Severus and Harry must face when they're forced to the little village of Lochdubh to settle a very late codicil of Albus Dumbledore's will.

Wow, you really nailed your prompts perfectly! I enjoyed how you wove your story and I very much liked Snape and Harry's backstory. I really wish I could get my hands on those audiobooks!

Oh wow, this was amazing. I love you're writing style, about a quarter of the way through I realised it reminded me of something, it took me a moment to realise the something was "A sensible Garden" and a moment longer to realise thats coz you wrote that as well (I'm a tad slow.) Beautifully written, I don't read many post war fics, but this one is stunning.

When i saw the author's name I new this was going to be an amazing read (she has never dissapointed before and I doubt she ever will). But I was still unprepared for this amazingly great piece of snarry. well done, I gave it a 10 out of 10 (or really a 9 out of 9 ; )

this was a great story. and you have come up with the PERFECT job for snape. omg, you are a genius. i don't blame harry in the slightest for sitting on the floor outside of snape's room and listening in.

and even though this story was tragic in so many ways--oh, harry, harry, harry, why do you think you deserve to be treated like garbage??--it ended well, which is all a girl can hope for, really. and that shock we got in the cottage at the end? OMG, I LOVE YOU. harry belongs, finally :)

Excellent story, Team Captain! I utterly loved the profession you picked for Snape -- I'd definitely get in line to buy a copy of his audiobooks!

It was a very engaging read from beginning to end. I only wish I could vote!

Believe it or not I was just talking with a friend last week about how Alan Rickman should be doing audio books! With that said, I don't have the words to describe how beautiful this story was. What a treat! I cried right along with Harry at the end of his "lesson". Snape's guilt and self-denial were perfect examples of why I love his character so much. This was most definitely an instant classic. Thanks providing a glowing start to my week.

I went to go see Tori Amos on Saturday and was finishing this up a half hour before the concert began. Thank the Goddess for my BlackBerry. She serves me well! LOL

That said...

This was such a long and satisfying read. It took me a few days, but it was definitely worth the time invested. The Snarry dynamic absolutely struck a chord with me. I thought it was perfect. I love that Snape mentored Harry, and that Harry wanted to be taught. The sex scenes were perfect. I was actually glad that Snape had thrown Harry out the first time, because it just seems like something he would have no qualms about doing on the outside, even when he's conflicted on the inside. And I love that their first time wasn't ideal, but rough and a bit angry. Mmmm! And then there's Mercutio and Snape's reading audiobooks with that sexy, sexy voice of his. But he still did his Potions on the side. Just a small detail that I really appreciated. Just a lovely, lovely story, sweetie. I have a few thoughts on the ending, but I'm going to share those with you over email when I can.

♥

Oh gosh! That was absolutely lovely! Perfect! It made me smile and cry and laugh... and I love the way you really wove the prompts into the story rather than just having them as decoration, if that makes sense. Everyone was 'coming home' in some many different ways. The literal sense of 'home' with the inheritance of the house and the difference houses in the story, and then the abstract 'coming home'- Harry finding his father, visa versa, and of course Harry and Sname finding each other. And then, running parallel is the Captains Courageous story, also about the different ways of coming home.

I also like the way you told the story- slowly, as if you yourself was withholding information, keeping secrets. Especially concerning Snape and Harry's past- did they have a past, had they been lovers, why did Harry idolise Snape? All this, you told in bits and pieces, spread out.

Sorry, I'm rambling and over analysing and I'm gonna stop know. just wanted to say I loved this and I'm happy I found a new writer I like. *goes of to look for your other fics*

What a fantastic story!

Fabulous idea of Severus recording the audiobooks - very original.
A lovely heartwarming story where everyone gets what they want at the end.

Story handed in, yours was the first fic I turned to in the games. It was well worth it - I haven't been able to tear my eyes away from the screen (even though I have company... er...) The writing was masterful, and the characterization was excellent for both Harry and Snape. I liked Snape especially - he wasn't too melodramatic or emotional, he had his own interests and passions and life. I just adored this story, and will certainly return to it again and again.

Oh yeah, and gorgeously hot love scenes. My company is probably wondering why I'm fanning myself and staring at the computer in silence.

Congratulations on a great story! And I have to echo previous comments about buying those audio books.

What a lovely, gentle story. I really loved how Harry initially learned lessons from books, but then Severus pointed out to him that simply reading a book doesn't change one's life. And personally, I found it incredibly satisfying that Harry found his family amongst non-magical people, too - I think you were really true to Harry's canon craving for 'normalcy', but in a way that didn't diminish him or substitute magical 'normalcy' for Harry's cultural reality.

And dang. I loved Hamish. *g*

This is one I'll be rereading over and over. I didn't know the crossover aspect of the story, but it didn't matter at all. I loved the parallels of Severus' books and all the twists and turns of the plot.

The clincher for me was: "That is what you deserve." Stunning.

Thank you.

Well done. Emotional and bittersweet at times. I kinda felt a little lost at not knowing the Hamish MacBeth references, but the story came through regardless. Also, like so many others, I want those book recordings of Snape's. I have a funny feeling we are all imposing a certain actor's voice in there. *g*

I normally race to read your stories but I was very uncertain of this cross over - even though I love Hamish and the gang. Much to my suprise you made it work.
You have a way of removing Harry and Severus from all the usual props - Hogwarts, Harry's friends, most of the wizarding world - and yet still retaining their essential characters. They have moved on with their lives in ways that are totally in character, and the way you have blended them into a new family group is beautiful
And oh how I wish I could have Snape reading audio books to me. I'd never switch off my ipod!

It might have taken me a week to finish it (and lots of anxiety that I had yet to post a comment on), I have finally finished! Prepare for an inundation of exclamation points.

I LOVED IT! I loved that Harry was a woodworker and that Severus read audiobooks. I've never seen that in a fanfic before, but what a perfect choice! And their interaction with each other was an absolute pleasure to read. I loved that it took Snape nearly to the end of the story to finally give in to his own desires and Harry's. And the twist with Harry's father! I was NOT expecting that one at all! Up until Julian showed up, I was picturing a floppy, old man kind of like the man Riddle killed at his father's manner in GoF (can't remember the man's name, though I'm absolutely positive you will be able to, canon queen that you are :D). It was such a lovely idea, and so wonderful that Harry was able to find his family at last. I always lamented that Rowling killed off his grandparents and made his father an only child. This was a satisfying alternative.

All-in-all, I adored this! It's definitely my favorite of all the Games entries, and possibly one of my favorite Snarry's of all time! Very well done! I'm tempted to try and sneak a vote in again ;)

I can see I'll be reading fics from this fest for a long time to come. I only just got around to having time to read this one.

This was lovely, a nice thing to be able to read on a muggy summer day when one needs distraction from steamy heat and no way to escape it.

I liked the natural progression of their relationship here, stemming from their shared history, an ill-timed first encounter and their unique relationships with Albus Dumbledore and Lily Potter.

Having only seen one episode of Hamish MacBeth, I can't speak to that aspect of the fic, but I did enjoy seeing a slice of life there and how both Harry and Severus find it and each other in the safety of its welcoming confines.

Mercutio was charming. Harry's love of creating things with his own hands unsurprising and very fitting. Severus's profession is one I have long felt he would end up doing if he went undercover, although your concept is an interesting one since here he finds pride and comfort in learning he is good at something besides what his two masters would have approved. Something that does not require his magic at all, except the magic of his voice. (and some of us can and do appreciate that!)

My favourite part of the fic was when Severus decides to show Harry the difference between being fucked and being made love to. Particularly wrenching was the line: He'd had this fantasy hundreds of times when he'd desperately tried to retrieve that stolen, ruined encounter and make it into something memorable, worthy of both of them.

It is so quintessentially Severus. Canon even, as Rowling showed us his doing something even more drastic in DH with his safeguarding of that fragment of a letter from Lily wherein she bestows love to another, not even him, and he clings to this fragment, with a clear intent of utilizing it to sustain him in his dark hours, when fantasy was likely his only means of escape.

That he is surprised when Harry accepts him flaws and all, is again, so very Severus -- after all, he has accepted Harry in all his flawed humanity and yet he still does not feel anyone would do the same for him. :) I love that about them both; Harry's forgiving nature and Snape's exacting one. You did them both proud here. Brava!

lovely, lovely, my dear joan you have wrought such a beautiful story. I am certainly adding a few books to my list, now that I will be able to hear Severus reading them.

How deftly you have woven the tangled threads of their lives, with the help of the (perfectly canon) ongoing meddling of Dumbledore!

I love the original characters, how roger develops a presence long before he shows up. The Scottish detail is delightful: long ago I went thru Kyle of Lochalsh on my way to the Hebrides...

**happy sigh** must get to bed now. I want to read it again. soon.

Oh I loved this! I read a few paragraphs in and decided it was print worthy to be read in the bath - my favorite place to read. And wow I was not disappointed.

I read so few fandom stories these days that I really choose my stories carefully, and this brought back my love of the fandom of old - or maybe back in the day when things still felt fresh and new to me.

I loved the complicated mess that Severus had made of things, and Harry, who was so independent and so very needy in a childlike way. And I have to say, you completely blindsided me with Julian. I didn't foresee that happening at all.

I loved how it ended - on that note of hope, where two porcupines, if veeeery careful, will be able to mate and share their den very happily.

Captains Courageous was one of my favorite books as a kid, and I would sell my soul to get my hands of an audio copy of Snape reading it!

This was sooo good. I really enjoyed the quietude that permeated the story and how this was character-driven. Lovely description of the settings and minor characters - I felt at home in Lochdubh right away. Love how you highlighted Snape having had time to find contentment and peace of mind (at least cursory) by introducing his dealings with Mercutio right in the beginning. By showing his behaviour in regards to his familiar you deftly made me believe in him being humane and patient enough to care about this Harry. Thanks for a brilliant read!

I'd heard it was fabulous so I saved it for a nice lazy Saturday afternoon read and I'm glad I did.
What a story!
Severus would be an AWESOME audiobooks reader! :)
Harry's self-destructive tendencies make prefect sense given the life he's lead.
The pivotal scene for me, of course, is when Severus demonstrates how Harry should expect to be treated, what he deserves. No wonder Harry cried. I almost did.
Lovely story, my dear! Not that I expected anything less. :)
