Summerfest Quilt for [info]drachenmina

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I finished this a little while ago, and [info]drachenmina just got it in the mail, so here are the photos.
The center piece is an illustration from Mina's fic "A Most Impractical Cat" and there are some choice quotes from the piece free-motion quilted into it.

  • Yay! Another crafter!

You are amazing! This is so fabulous. I can only imagine the amount of effort and skill and love and thought you put into this. Again....the colors! (I really want to meet you and see what you look like irl. I'm starting to picture you as the kind of person who almost shimmers with vibrancy--your work is so alive with color! OK...I'm probably obsessing.....)

The multi-fabric border is wonderful. I love how the scale of the patterns and the darkening colors move the eye into the center. Plus, the border has a feeling of insubstantial floating--like in deep space, or things moving around on water. Its hard to describe, but all of that depth and movement surrounding the solidity of the portrait really makes it pop. I know you know all these things but its just so cool to see you do it with fabric! (I'm really not surprised...you are an artist after all! *rolls eyes at self*)

And the quilting for the picture is *guh*..... I don't have words. I wish I had that kind of skill and confidence for my dolls--how you put a little line just so to make a collar bone, or the fold of the robe. I'm really partial to that kind of economy--just enough to suggest. And I'm in love with the textured stitching on the white background too. Those kind of details add so much and make me a slavish admirer. (I really want to get in there and look at it stitch by stitch!)

Anyway...I totally love this and stand in aweof your amazing talents. Drachenmina is such a lucky recipient, but we are too. I hope you'll find a place to post pics of other work you've done in fabric, and I hope I can keep you from feeling stalked! lol!
    • LOL, not feeling stalked quite yet. If you followed the photo links to Flickr you'll see some of my crafty projects, although I hope to expand them soon.

I think I'd like to do more character quilts, maybe work up a little collection of them to take to Azkatraz or something...

and as for the simplicity of the lines, you can hand the credit to my mother. she gave me some really good tips on doing the quilting that paid off. I was going to try to outline every line I'd made in the drawing and that just would have been odd.

I'm really happy that the purple fabrics are working well for everyone. I was looking for science-y, chemistry-ish, Snape-ish fabrics, but also stuff Mina would like. Man, I LOVE the quilt store down by the port. Such great selection.

      :D
