time warp
Who: Remus Lupin + Lily Evans
When: Maybe half an hour after this
Where: NYCWC Cafeteria
What: Remus rushes to see if this "Lily Evans" over the boards is just screwing with him.
Rating/status: ~PG/finished.

As Remus stepped off the short set of steps leading up to the antique shop, he turned again and clasped hands with the owner who was just about twelve years his senior. "Thank you for the interview, Mr. Townsend."

"Thank you, too," Townsend said to him with a tight smile. "You'll definitely hear from us again, Mr. Snape."

"All right."

Their hands parted, and before Remus knew it, the moment his potential employer had disappeared, he was walking briskly towards the corner to the closest alley, almost bumping into a woman with her groceries. "Sorry," he breathed to her with half his brain. It was quite unlike him, but he couldn't help him. An hour ago, faced with a bulletin board in the shop, waiting for his name to be called with Gwen Harkness' words in mind, he began wondering how the magical thing worked and decided to try it out, even if it could give his location away to a couple of evil-doers. He reckoned it worked almost the same way as a map he had done during his younger years but...a little less complicated and intelligent, but superb nonetheless. That was when a certain female had introduced herself as Lily Evans.

The Lily Evans?

So many questions took root from there and it was difficult not to think about them during his job interview. Why Evans? Why not Potter? How did she get here? Who did she come with? How about Harry? And then later: is she really his Lily Evans? It was a rather common-sounding name to start with...

But just the same, the possibilities of the combination coming from a lost woman couldn't be endless, could it? He pondered this as he marched deeper into the alley and spun round his heels, images of his room in the Welcome Center flashing in his mind as the ground beneath his feet crumbled away and the sound of a vacuum sucked into his ear.

Crack!

He dumped his faked documents in his bed the moment he recognized his door across of him and he all but bolted out of it. He kept himself in check as he walked down the halls, greeted Millie with a small smile and hurried down to the cafeteria where this Lily Evans told him they'd meet. He didn't know when other stayers of the Center went down for meals and wondered if there would be one too many red-haired females for him to choose from.

But spotting her had been easy enough. The frame of her shoulders, the shape of her head, even from the back, these were sights that were all so familiar to him, it didn't even seem like he'd missed them, not when he was so aware of them. Wondering if he looked well enough, Remus breathed in as he walked closer to her, then clearing his throat, he said to her: "Hullo, New York."

Getting there. After three years, and they were still in the thick of it. Or more in the thick of it. She tried not to be discouraged about it, because it at least meant she was alive three years from ... her point of departure.

"Of course they are," she replied, squeezing his hands gently. "I can't imagine they've all backed off and decided to sit us all down and chat compromise over tea." Not that she'd drink tea a Death Eater offered her anyway.

She shivered as he described his arrival, and she shook her head. At least she'd arrived alone and not in the midst of some sort of conflict. "That's a horrible thought," she murmured before she sighed. Well, why shouldn't part of the war have followed them here? She did make a note though to be sure she had her wand on her at all times, even if she was just darting down the hall for something.

She arched her brows as she eyed him at his confession. "Of all the names to choose," she replied before she shook her head. "Why not Benjy or Frank or something? Something less ... remarkable?" She also thought it was going to be very interesting for anyone who met the real Severus after having met Remus masquerading as him. Though she supposed for the sake of derailing Death Eaters, it was as good a name as any. Still, he could have gone with Rosier or Avery; they had normal names as well and it would have served the same purpose.

"Just as well you didn't tell me you were Severus over the board. It would have gotten interesting, I imagine."

"I couldn't!" Remus finally laughed although soft enough so that only he and Lily heard it. "There was just something wrong about telling someone my name was Severus Snape in the board, not when everyone could read it! If a Death Eater had read that I was named Severus, they would seek me out, I imagine." So now, he vowed never to mention his or Severus' name in reference to himself on the board.

"But with just one person, it seemed much easier. After you, there was a woman who found my note and left me a response. Her name is Selina Kyle, and I suppose I can say that she was the one who saved me when I arrived here." He was yet to repay her for her good help. "At that time, I was scared and hurt, I'd splinched my fingernails and I was," Remus shook his head, "an embarrassing mess. That was how I decided that she couldn't know my real name. Severus Snape was the first thing that popped in my head, a name I could freely use without damaging my friends and loved ones."

Lily pressed a hand to her mouth at his explanation of why he'd chosen Sev's name, and she shook her head. "You're horrible," she informed him with as straight a face she could manage -- which wasn't very.

She did draw his hands into a position to get a better look at them, smoothing her thumbs over his nails before lifting her eyes to meet his. "Well, at least it all turned out all right then." She was curious about this woman though, and wondered if there'd be introductions in the near future.

At least she'd managed to apparate intact, but she hadn't tried to do it in the middle of anything. She also wondered then if Severus had wound up here as a result of an apparation accident, and she very nearly latched onto that as a theory before recalling that it likely wasn't the case. There were people not of their world here, so clearly this wasn't just some apparation malfunction.

Shaking out of those thoughts, she simply smiled to Remus while she sorted through the questions tumbling around in her mind. She should focus on the here and now and not things back home. Especially things that didn't matter ... like how the wedding had gone, and if it was as beautiful as she imagined it should be, and if Sirius behaved himself. No, how a wedding went wasn't important. What was important was employment and shelter and food and things like that.

But those were also downers, and she didn't really want to bring the mood down. So for a moment, she was content to simply gaze at him quietly, a silly little smile on her lips.

"That's what they all say," Remus said pleasantly of his horribleness. There was, at least, the consolation that if he was horrible, then James and Sirius would be magnanimously horrid. "I really am glad that episode of my arrival is done and over with, as well." And that was the truth.

In the silence that replaced their conversation, he let out some breath -- a little sigh of sorts -- as he drank in Lily's smile and physical being and he sat with light satisfaction. "I really missed you, Lily," he admitted with sincerity. He was not going to lie, he was glad that she was here with him! And gladder still that she was not his "real" Lily, and that his "real" Lily was still safe with her husband and son. An 18-year old Lily made it out fine, didn't she? Taking care of her should be of no harder trouble...

"Oh I just remembered," Remus said in a breath, "You have work, don't you? You should tell me about it! And these prats and toerags. They can't be more terrible than the vile bleeders back home..."

"I'm glad to see you," she said softly to him. "I hate that you're stuck here, of course, but if I have to be here, I'm glad you're around for company." She smiled, then tilted her head. "We should see about getting a flat together," she suggested. "I'm sure James would appreciate that. He wouldn't want me living on my own, or with a stranger."

Lily exhaled softly at his question. "I'd rather not talk about the prat. It'll just get me all riled up again, but he's a right piece of work." She fixed her emerald eyes on Remus, then opted against asking. She was certain Remus had no desire to shag her, and she wouldn't want to embarrass him by asking.

"It's ... secretarial work, at the Sterling-Cooper place, just a couple blocks away. It isn't as though I can afford to be picky just now. It ... it doesn't seem that bad. It'll keep me busy and it's a pay check, and until they find us a way home, what more can we ask for, really?"

She wondered if Remus was still hoping for a way home, or if he'd begun to resign himself to being stuck here. He had two weeks on her, after all.

A flat with Lily was a great idea! They'd share the rent, share the chores, Remus could look after her better, he didn't need to suffer James' wrath for letting her on her own, it would just be like home! But it was an idea Remus was not very enthralled about and it could be seen from the smile that flickered in his face and the hollow way he nodded and said, "That's brilliant." He would love to live with Lily, if only his wolfish nature permitted her safety...

"I had been hearing about the Sterling-Cooper. It's one of those big names," Remus said. "I'm glad you managed to find employment there, if only undeserving of your skills and talent. But it would be enough for until we get back home..."

He paused for a moment. "Actually, I had been thinking about home. It's curious and maybe even ridiculous but..." looking up to face Lily, he asked her, "Do you remember what Dumbledore said? That help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it?"

Her expression shifted slightly. He said it was brilliant, but something about his tone seemed a little off. "Well, it's nothing we have to decide right now. It'll be a few weeks at least, before I'd even be in a position to start considering paying rent, I'm sure."

"I am glad, too," she admitted. Glad for the employment, at any rate, and she was certain she'd be fine in time. She'd just keep to herself and lay low and do her work. Maybe make a friend or two, though she had her doubts there.

Her brows elevated slightly as she regarded him, wondering what tangent they were about to embark on. "Of course. But we're hardly at Hogwarts, love, and for all we know ... it doesn't even exist in this ... world." Or reality. Or whatever it was. "You think the school's going to reach across realities to help us out?" She supposed it wasn't impossible especially given that no one knew how they'd gotten here, but it did seem unlikely, if that was where he was headed.

Remus nearly snorted. How could Hogwarts not exist? That was impossible. "Of course Hogwarts exists even here! How else are we capable of making magic or...or even Apparating?" And then it just occurred to him that every attempt he had done to Apparate to Hogwarts had been thwarted by some unknown force. He pushed this out of his mind. The distance was probably too great for him, or he was not determined enough. There would be other ways.

"Hogwarts has been around since Voldemort's time and it's currently 1964, just a few years shy from when the war struck," he continued. "It doesn't matter if we aren't in Hogwarts now, either, we just have to be there. We will find a way to leave this place -- perhaps by an American Diagon Alley, a train or a broom or an American Ministry, travel to Hogwarts, seek Dumbledore's help and be on our way. He would have answers to our questions."

"It's been around longer than that," she pointed out with a little smile. "For a thousand years or so." She wasn't sure how to answer the question about magic though. They were magical; it wouldn't matter if there was a school or not -- they'd still be able to do magic. It was in their blood, and as long as they had a wand, they could do magic.

"I ... I don't think we can leave, love. I met another woman just yesterday who could do something like apparating, and ... her power is a bit crippled as well. I think we're stuck in this city, or ... or at least this state." She hadn't fully tested the limits of their boundaries, but she'd been a bit busy. "I think whatever, whoever brought us here is ... is holding us in a very large, very invisible cage."

Still, if he wanted to give exploration a shot, she was game. If he thought he had a way out, she'd try it.

"...to be honest, I had tried Apparating myself," Remus admitted but he was not about to lose hope, not when all means hadn't been exhausted yet. "To Hogwarts. It didn't work, of course, but I think it is because the distance is too great. And I am probably too weak or not determined enough to get me there. But you must wonder, Lily, if no one can leave this place, then why are we the only ones complaining?" he asked her. "Why isn't the entire city screaming to get out? Personally, I think it's because they can."

It seemed very simple for Remus, in spite of the fact that his theories are in the very least theories or even hypotheses. But he went on with confidence in his words, "We need just find a way to slip out with them...or perhaps," he gestured to Lily, "if we really can't leave this place, then perhaps...I don't know, someone who can send out an owl or a note to Hogwarts. I really think there is a way, Lily, we just have to be wise enough to find it."

"You can't apparate that far," she murmured. She was fairly certain, at any rate, that apparating had a distance limit on it. Portkeys likely did, too, but a greater distance. "You couldn't apparate onto the grounds, anyway. The closest you could probably get was Hogsmeade."

She shook her head slightly before she gazed across at him. "We're displaced, Remus. I don't think they are. I think the majority of people here are natives, and the people in the welcome center ... we're the ones that don't belong here. That somehow we got displaced. I don't think it'll matter. We're stuck here, somehow, and even if we clung onto them, made it out with them, we'd still wind up back here.

"Besides. We came in here, so it makes sense that the way out will be around here, somewhere." If there even was a way out, and Lily had her doubts, if people had been here for a month or more. If there was a way, why hadn't it been found already?

"We can look though," she added quietly. "See if perhaps we're the lucky pair that finds the way out."

"Hogsmeade is much better than New York," Remus uttered to her.

He couldn't help but feel disheartened by Lily's words, though, and he was starting to believe her. Possibly because...even before his theory had come into mind, this had been what was in it.

He pressed his lips together in a weak smile, an empty one, as he gazed at their hands, still laced together albeit loosely. "We will look, Lily," he said to her quietly. He couldn't show her he'd lost his spirit...

"Oh, Lily, I promise you, we'll be that lucky pair," he said to her eyes. "I will get you out of here, and back to James if it's the last thing that I will do, I swear to God."

Lily wanted to believe him, that they'd get home -- and soon -- but she was also trying to be realistic. "It is," she agreed. "I'd rather be there than here. And back in our own time, while we're wishing for things."

She licked her lips, gazing down at their hands. "I've been ... well, trying to avoid long term planning, but doing it all the same. I don't want to think of us being stuck here for weeks, or months, or Merlin forbid, years, but it's a possibility. Something we have to consider, at any rate. Better to plan for it and find a way home than to not plan and ... be worse off than we would have been otherwise."

But they could spend time looking for a way back. Between working or finding work or finding a place to live that wasn't the welcome center.

Remus nodded to her words. In a way, they were back to square one -- or more him than her, seeing as he was still in need of a job and a Shrieking Shack. Hopefully one that didn't include her, or at least didn't include putting her life in danger.

"Do you suppose," he said with something like a chuckle, "we could do something for the Order while we are here? Deal with the lost Death Eaters, I mean, disable them. There is Severus, we could start with him." Positivity was laced in his voice as he tried to keep the corner of his lips from peaking.

"I imagine if we run across any Death Eaters it would be our sworn duty to dispatch them," Lily agreed, though she wondered if that was truly going to be an issue -- aside from the one that had apparently come through with him. She certainly hadn't seen any.

Lily shook her head at the mention of Severus. "You should just ... leave him be," she murmured. "Unless he starts something, there's no reason to start with him." There was no reason, really, they even had to see one another, though the thought of that made her sad. There was no reason he needed to be alone in this place -- but she also couldn't see him regarding an offer of friendship from her or Remus with anything but hostility and suspicion.

Her expression shifted slightly, sorrow briefly visible in her eyes before she sighed softly. No matter. It was done. They weren't friends, he wanted nothing to do with her, and she wasn't going to push anything unless she saw a reason to and she couldn't imagine him giving her one.

It was when Lily didn't even so much as slap him in the arm that Remus realized again that she was not the Lily he knew, that the memory of their falling out and Severus' choice of friends was somehow still fresh to her. The smile had gone away completely, and he let out a sigh through his nose as he clasped her closest hand firm, squeezing it. "I'm sorry, Lily. I didn't realise I might be touching something raw with that. I won't talk about him this way anymore." And that was a promise.

The cafeteria had become less populated during their conversation and the cashier was empty -- although, so was the food display. Still, it was an opportunity for distraction and he stood up with this in mind. "I reckon it's nearly time for tea. Would you like some?"

"No, it's ... it isn't as though you have any reason to make exceptions for him. I don't want you to censor yourself. Not on my account. I mean, there's a reason he and I fell out." Choices were made, things were said, and while some days she did long for the days before that incident, she'd convinced herself an eventual falling-out was inevitable. It was sad and sometimes it still hurt, but that was life.

Still, ever the optimist, Lily thought she'd like to have a chance at mending things. Without the elements of their world and the war here, it might be possible. She still wasn't going to hold her breath though.

"Tea sounds lovely," she agreed as she watched him stand. It was nice to see him, and sketchy topics of conversation aside, she was pleased she'd discovered his presence here.

"Stay here," Remus said to Lily needlessly as he slipped out of the bench and made his way towards the front which was backed by a wall filled with square chalkboards littered with colorful scrawls of the day's menu. He was the next person in line when he stepped before the counter where he order for tea and two slices of cake, the kind that was made of egg, flour, sugar and sugar.

He returned to Lily soon after with a tray of his order, carrying the plates out of it as he sat down and stirring his tea as he set aside his teabag. "When do you start work?" he asked, "Or have you already begun?"

"Today," she replied. "I ... did already. It's ..." She shrugged. "It's work. It's loud, everyone smokes and keeps offering them to me, I'm expected to dress a certain way or receive commentary on my attire," and the man she'd had all intentions of avoiding and never seeing again, the one who had told her to never come back, was the one who'd offered her a job -- so there was the confusion factor as well. That though would be dealt with, soon, if only because she wouldn't let it stand for long. She abhorred mixed signals, and if this wasn't the biggest one of all time, it was a close thing.

"What about you?" She prompted as she drew her cup of tea closer. "What sort of prospects are you looking at?" She hoped he had some, but she couldn't imagine that he hadn't been looking.

"Just..." Remus shook his head a little as if to shrug, "...work. Paid work. Nothing too extravagant or ambitious, perhaps something that won't be too demanding, either, if to give me an escape for those nights." Tossing his hair back a little, he said, "You know, looking for work here is much easier than back home. The Muggles are ignorant, there is nothing that is forcing me to reveal what I truly am. I had actually just come from an interview a while ago. A small antique shop which I suspect is home to many boggarts."

Taking up his fork, he pierced at the sharp end of the cake and scooped it off. "I do wonder if it would be enough to rent me a house..." He ate his cake piece. "Augh-- bloody hell, this is awful."

Lily imagined that if Muggles knew what to look for, he'd be spotted eventually, but she didn't suppose they did. "Best of luck with that then," Lily murmured. "I imagine that would suit. That, or the library," she suggested, a hint of a smile on her lips. She thought it was a shame she hadn't thought of that for herself first; she could quietly sort books. Instead, she was ... well, where she was. For now, at least. She still liked to imagine that some morning she'd be back home and not here.

"A house would be nice," she agreed, though she hadn't for a moment aspired that high. A flat seemed ... less long term to her. A house seemed like an 'I live here now' commitment, and she was determined to go at least three months before she reached that point. She thought it was a fairly realistic goal, and she wondered if she'd meet it or if she'd give up before then.

She grinned at his reaction to the cake. "Your tastes must be more discriminating than mine," she teased him. It wasn't the best she'd ever had, but it wasn't horrible.

Remus opened his mouth to protest, but he shut it, anyway, in favor for a curled smile of sorts, something akin to a smirk, maybe. "Well, I don't suppose it can be helped." All in the way of being a werewolf, he thought.

Anyway, food was food, and he knew how not to waste it. After having more tea, he devoured half his cake. "We should probably make a plan for ourselves for now. Find a job, find a place to move to," especially him, "and then find a way to stay in contact with each other. And then...look for a way back home."

Hadn't she tried that, just a moment ago? "I still think we should move in together. Once we've saved up a comfortable cushion. Enough to handle a couple of months' rent, at any rate, just in case something does happen." After all, she couldn't really see anyone kicking them out of the welcome center, not if they were working and proving they were trying to get established.

"It just makes sense," she insisted. "Why should we look for separate places and get stuck with unknown roommates when we can just live with each other and split rent in a nice flat we both like?"

Lily exhaled quietly. If he was going to insist they not live together, she wouldn't push him. "We could make mirrors," she replied. "Like the ones James and Sirius made in school. I'd like to try that, regardless, in case I need someone to talk to and be my voice of reason while I'm at work." She'd have to be careful, of course, but she was sure she could find quiet places to use it.

"Because I do not want you hurt!" Remus said almost sharply although his features remained flat for the most part. "Lily, I can't tell you how much I would love to share a flat with you, but if that will put you at risk during...during those nights, then I would much rather you stay with a stranger. You're safer there."

It was only after his quick explosion that Remus realized his behavior and he sighed as he cut up his cake, again. "We should just stick with the mirrors," he said to his plate, almost mumbling to it. "I might remember how James and Sirius did them."

Lily stared at him. "Then go somewhere else on those nights," she suggested. "It's bloody ridiculous to not live with me for 29 days out of a month because of the one night you're not yourself. If you lived with someone else, you'd rather they be the ones in danger then? At least I know what you become." Not first-hand, of course, because James hadn't allowed her anywhere near them on full moon nights, and she wouldn't have disrespected Remus' privacy, anyway.

"I'm not taking no as an answer. Not if that's your only reason for leaving me to a stranger. And I'll tell James when he shows up," she "threatened", though there was a playful edge to it. "Remus," she said softly. "Just ... think about it, all right?"

She studied him quietly before reaching out for his hand, squeezing it gently. "We'll do the mirrors either way," she said quietly. "In case we run into something when we're out and about."

Remus had been keen to protest but there was something in the way Lily looked and something in the way that she sounded that reduced him to simply biting the inside of his lips. What she said made sense, of course. Live with her for 29 days, go away for the one day he was to shift...but go away where? The woods, maybe, if he ever does find one, or in some indistinct corner of New York where he could change and hope no one drops by to visit him.

To solve this problem, he really thought that a Shrieking Shack would do it. Less danger, less maintenance if he has to pay upkeep for both places, less worry...but less help. That was the best part about having a flatmate. He could have someone to look after him after his transformation and someone to help him hide or clean-up his mess.

He really missed his friends right now...

"All right," he said to Lily's hand, his fingers curling loosely around hers. "I will." Lily was the closest thing he could get for his friends and as a friend; and right about now, a friend was exactly what he needed, and really wanted.

Lily regarded him for a moment before she nodded. She was a little surprised he'd agreed so quickly, but then she recalled she was dealing with the Marauder that actually listened to logic and reason. "Good," she said softly. "That's settled then. We'll find a place in the meantime. Somewhere safe you can go when you turn." Then, after they each had some money, they'd work on finding a cheap-but-nice flat to call their own until such time as they were returned home. It wasn't her idea of perfection, but it was the best solution for this place.

She released his hand to return to the business of her cake. "I have to go out tomorrow and get some things to wear for work. I can pick up a couple of mirrors then, if you'd like," she offered. She reasoned she'd get a compact; that wouldn't look at all out of place. She'd just have to be careful not to lose it or lend it.

Remus was still not entirely convinced that he should be living with Lily, and he did much prefer finding a small house all for himself, but if Lily knew of this opinion, then he was sure neither of them would see any end to it. Best to leave it for some other time, maybe when Lily is a little less stubborn. He'll have to think about the whole arrangement, anyway.

Now if James or Sirius or Peter or maybe some other Order member would just drop by for a permanent visit, then things would be much better...

"All right. You know mirrors better than I do," Remus said as he finished his cake, leaving most of the icing on the plate. "Shall I come with you, though? Anyhow, I am looking for work...and a place," he said quickly and added just as swiftly, "I don't have much longer to stay in the Centre."

"Is there a time limit on how long we can stay?" She frowned lightly, wondering if that really was the case. She could understand, certainly, if people were just being layabouts, but people who were actually trying, and working? No one had mentioned to her, or if they had, she'd missed it.

Leaning forward, she swiped a finger through the icing left on his plate, sucking it lightly off her finger. "It'll be dull. I have to do ... a bit of shopping. Find things appropriate for work. You don't have to." She thought she'd see if she could find a sturdy pocket mirror for him. Something manly. If she failed there, she supposed he could likely transfigure a compact into something that suited better.

"We can find a place together. Next weekend," she suggested before swiping her fingertip across his plate again. "You could pop around for jobs in the morning. Definitely try the library," she encouraged. "If nothing else is panning out."

Remus gave her a mock look of disapproval, a friendly eying of sorts, as he moved aside her tea cup and pushed forward his plate. "Next weekend, then," he said to agree. If they found a place at that weekend, then everything would work out for him. If not, he supposed he could just confund a poor Muggle hermit and steal his home for a couple of nights...

Still, at least now, he had something to look forward to...aside from the next full moon.

"Brilliant," she declared with a contented smile. Whether or not they found a place, they could at least get an idea of what was out there, and what it was going to cost a month, and what they'd need to afford. Still, a lot could happen in a week, so she was hopeful and optimistic.

Content enough to let the conversation drift to more pleasant topics, Lily was simply pleased that one of her friends was here. Now, if only James would show up ...
