Popeye, crossdresser with a cause THIMBLE THEATRE by EC Segar is so one of the greatest comics strips ever to hit print. The humor, pathos, action and suspense remain amazingly effective almost a century later. The art and dialogue work perfectly. And the Fleischer Brothers cartoons from the 1930s (even though not quite as good as the strip) show much of this magic.
This Sunday page from June 1932 is a good example. Popeye has taken in an desperate orphan*(for a rough weathered old sailor, he has a heart like a big marshmallow). Trying to make her feel at home, he puts on a skirt and plays at being her grandmother. Popeye is so confident in himself that he's not embarassed at all to go out in public like this. When the abusive "Big Butch" comes to claim the little girl, he has no idea what he's confronting and Popeye thrashes him. It's interesting too that the cop not only doesn't try to stop the "woman" beating her husband unconscious, he encourages it ("Knock him around all you please, Grandma.")
_________
*(1932, no Department of Child Services or anything like that, no Welfare, millions out of work and going hungry. There were plenty of homeless children on the streets.

Golden Age Wonder Woman These are from Sensation Comics #4, 1942. Remember that these can be bought in the Archive Edition reprints; thus far there are five Wonder Woman volumes. And they have them of other Golden Age comics too; I also have the Black Canary volume.
This issue introduces Wonder Woman's enemy Baroness Paula von Gunther, whom she later reformed, probably by spanking her.

Golden Age Wonder Woman This is one of my favorite Golden Age WW stories ever, Wonder Woman vs. the International Milk Company. It's one of those unusually cracked out ones. Originally published in Sensation #7 in 1942.

Golden Age Wonder Woman Today's story is from Sensation Comics #8, 1942, about a department store chain called Bullfinch that overworks its employees terribly. Yeah, WW shilling for labor unions. Sad.

The Shield is a defector?
Hmmm. Canada's SUPER COMICS# 1 reprinted MLJ stories from PEP COMICS# 22, December 1941. For such a patriotic guy, the Shield doesn't seem to have objected to changing his American flag-inspired costume for one based on the Union Jack. Maybe he was just doing his part to show solidarity between the United States and Canada in this dark hour of history.. what a guy.

Golden Age Wonder Woman These are from Sensation Comics #9, 1942. Some of you may know how Wonder Woman originally got her "Diana Prince" identity. She ran into a nurse who resembled her and was coincidentally named Diana - Diana Prince - who wanted to go to South America where her fiancé was, but didn't have the money. Wonder Woman gave her the money in exchange for her identification papers, which she used to get a job in the hospital where Steve Trevor was being treated.
In this issue, the original Diana Prince, now Diana White, returns to America. Her marriage is to all appearances happy, but, well, odd. I'm sure none of you are surprised.

Golden Age Wonder Woman: The Origin Well, the next post in my archives is from Wonder Woman #1, 1942, which somebody else already handled quite well here. I'll just repost one panel which seriousfic also posted, which I found especially amusing.
On to the next post. In Wonder Woman #1, published in 1942, the story of her origin is retold.

Golden Age Wonder Woman Bondage These are from Sensation Comics #11, 1942.
You know, the comic book writers and artists of the 40's didn't know that they were the Golden Age. I'm sure it never occurred to any of them that decades later, adults would be reading their creations, analyzing them and laughing at the plot holes. They were just trying to pay the rent. They had to make those kids hand over that dime which might well be a whole week's allowance, so they used the most eye-catching gimmicks they could think of. "People like cowboys/ancient Egypt/leopard-skin-clad jungle queens," they would say. "Let's build a story around that." And they would, however far-fetched the combination might be.
And it's lucky for us that they did so, because it gave the more serious comic book writers of today, who know that adults are going to read their stories with a critical eye, all kinds of crazy elements that they have to try to get to make sense. Today's comic book readers want to have our cake and eat it too; we want our heroes to be from other planets or from lost civilizations, we want them to be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, we want them to run around doing good deeds in patriotically colored spandex... and we want the writer to make all of this make sense.
I love superhero comics.
Today's installment is basically The Story of O for kids. Really. No, really. It was very hard not to just scan the whole issue.
