Golden Age Wonder Woman

I've figured it out. What's cool about Etta Candy is, though she's a comic character, Marston allowed her to be a real person too. She's brave and tough and loyal and has high aspirations. Here she's actually trying to send Wonder Woman a mental radio message, even though she hasn't been trained to do it.

I love how unapologetic she is. In a world where anorexic models faint on the runway and emaciated young women sign up with Weight Watchers, we need a woman who isn't in the least intimidated by the command to diet.

I have to say, Diana seems to be awfully calm about a girl being thrown down a mine shaft.

Etta protects her own. Give me Etta over a truckload of scrawny supermodels!

Get a load of Diana's ensemble here.

It turns out evil people were forcing Pepita to do bad things. Wonder Woman trounces the evil people, and:

Stick to your guns, Etta!

Heh, you got Etta. I loves me the heavier ladies.

Sudden realization -- I *am* Etta Candy. That explains everything about my life. Food doesn't argue back or leave you on a Saturday night, it always tastes good.

I just don't want to be too fat to punch bad guys or strangle the bimbo who is trying to hurt my kid brother, that would just disappoint Wonder Woman and I don't want that!

Didja notice that even the slinky Latina is named after a food stuff? Pepitas are pumpkin seeds, particularly yummy when freshly toasted and salted.

"My constitution has lots of room for amendments." That line is way too genius for the golden age.

Excuse me? That line IS the golden age.

I'm afraid I'll have to sentence you to watch Bringing Up Baby (1938), Ball of Fire (1941), and The Lady Eve (1941), plus two Mae West films to be named later.

Perhaps I should have specified "Golden Age Comics", upon which I can now see Wonder Woman was on the top of the heap.

Sounds about right!

Yeah, I knew you meant comics, but my point in naming those films is that they were a big influence on the comics and genre writers of the era. That kind of snappy repartee on the big screen is what they aspired to deliver on the page. (Also, in the prewar era the women characters could banter along with the men and weren't expected to be demure wallflowers, as they were in the postwar years...and this got reflected in the comics as well.)

Is it just me or did anyone think "Archie" when Etta's brother talked about his crappy red jalopy?

I do like that even though they've got the "black weasel" slur, Diana is all "Aphrodite bless you" about Mint and Pepita's relationship afterwards.

I don't think it's a racial slur, actually, just an insult - like 'blackhearted', or something like that. After all, Pepita ISN'T black, and someone of Etta's era would have known plenty of slurs to hurl at a Mexican girl.

You might not be so generous with your praise if [info]mosellegreen had posted any panels of the porter on that train Etta and Di are riding.

Yeah. Actually, when I scanned this, I remember that at first I included him in the scan. I thought, I shouldn't try to hide that Marston & Peters did this. But I just couldn't bring myself to post it.

Oh, I'm not surprised; it's kind of like the Captain America issue with the crazy sea serpent sub-ship, when Golden Age comics *aren't* hideously racist is the exception, thus me noting it.

Mint? Really? They missed such an opportunity. His name should have been Rock.

Etta, I love you dearly, but your fashion sense sucks. Change out of that ghastly cowgirl outfit - it's hurting my eyes somethin' fierce.
