Three Scans From Detective 824
I had thought that all of Zee's appearances from Dini's run on 'Tec had been posted. I was wrong; her first showing was neglected.

Zee's other appearance in 'Tec have already been posted: Detective Comics 833, 834, 843, & 844, Detective Comics 847, and Detective Comics 850.

I can imagine "fap" and "Zee" in the same sentence...in a different context :p

I love the appearances Zee made in Dini's Detective run (and his ret-conning the DCAU childhood friendship of Bruce and Zatanna into DCU continuity). And even though I never saw it before during her appearances in 'Tec I could totally get onto the Bruce/Zee romance boat. They do have history, chemistry and she can lighten him up and since she's out of town a lot it could work as a long-distance thing. Ironically it's because of DIni's push for the ship that I totally never bought it that Zee would suddenly be gung-ho about promoting Selina to go after Bruce in Dini's Heart of Hush storyline. Just a few issues earlier she had wanted him for herself.

It will be interesting to see what Dini does with Zatanna and Batman if he's still on the Batman book when Bruce comes back (the Zatanna on-going he's writing should be out by then as well).

I'm more happy about the way that Dini managed to sweep under the rug the whole 'Bruce hates Zee cause of mindwiping' from Identity Crisis.

As for shipping Zee and Bruce, I think Dini made the best point of why they couldn't be together, even if it's the same reason/excuse for Bats avoiding getting attached to any woman.

Nonetheless, whenever Bruce gets back, maybe he'll lighten up to the point where he won't avoid having relationships with all the ladies in his life.

THAT would be interesting to see though. He is the Goddamn Batman after all, if anyone could pull it off he could. As it is Selina, Talia and Vicki Vale (his 3 historically most prominent love interests) are all back in the Bat-books these days.

I think Talia actively hates Bruce right now, though. So she can slide off the list and get replaced with Diana Zee.

"I think Talia actively hates Bruce right now, though"

Yeah, but I think most of that is mental manipulation, and that maybe can fade with time, maybe?

Besides, she trusted him enough not to force a custody issue when Damien went to live with him. Even now that he's "dead." Unless that's gonna be an issue in a future . . . issue.

It could be an issue in a future... issue.

And as far as I know, the hate does come from Nyssa's manipulations (repeated killing/Lazarus Pit resurrection), so it can theoretically be overcome. Right now she's not a fan of Bruce's, but I think she put the needs of Damian first, which is why she handed him over in the first place. Bruce could teach him things that she would not be able to, and she undoubtedly believed that the boy needs a father, even if it's Bruce.

I know it's a small thing, but I like a Batman could can actually say "You're kidding" and not in a snarky way, but in a real "You're not serious?" way when he's talking to a friend.

The art is excellent, but it must be one of those guys who loves to draw women and neglects the men. Zee is pretty, but I didn't recognize Bruce until I read the tags.

I need a make on a magician. Houdini-style. Not Fate.

Two problems. One, why drop Fate's name when you're talking to Zee? I guess it's ok since Fate doesn't work Vegas. Two, I think it should be either "magician", someone who uses magic spells, or "stage magician", someone who uses sleight of hand and other optical tricks. D&D always got it wrong -- sorcerers, witches, warlocks, wizards are all types of "magician", not "magic-user" or "wizard", although "mage" kind of works in a more informal way. I realize Zee is both, so it's definitely good to qualify, so ... "I need a make on a stage magician." Picky jerk shutting up now.

I believe the resolution to your one issue is in your other. When he says "Houdini-style. Not Fate," that's a single concept... he wants a magician in the style of Houdini, not a magician in the style of Fate. A stage magician, not a magic magician.

Yeah, I got it that Fate is not also a stage magician. Don't mind me, it's just that I've hated the term "magic-user" for too long.

I see. M'apologies.

(In D&D I've always been a fan of "arcanist," which conveniently side-steps the issue of arcane vs divine as well.)

I read that as "not fake," as in someone who actually works to get out of traps and such, and it's not, er, staged. And I'm back to confusing myself.

WHUFF ... fishnets ... boots .... I'm sorry, was I supposed to be paying attention to something plotlike here? Okaay, I'm impressed that Bruce feels he and Zee are close enough for him to greet her on the phone with "It's me." People who do that to me are doomed, doomed to a conversation of confusion.

That's generally how Bruce begins his conversation when he's using the Batvoice. Especially, amusingly enough, when he and the person he's calling haven't been on the closest terms recently (see also: Bruce calling Babs during Fugitive). The Batvoice is supposed to be pretty striking.

Or it's because his ego is just that big that he thinks everybody knows who he means when he sasy 'it's me'.

I have the Death and the City tpb, however it only compiles issues 827-834, so it just misses out on this terrific moment. It does conclude the Ivar Loxias story though.
