Zatanna Highlights from Detective Comics
As per request, Zatanna as done by Dini. From issues 833, 834, 843, and 844.

Bruce and Zee have a long history. In fact, she appears to be one of the only two childhood friends he's ever had. She's a much better friend than Hush, however.

They're investigating the murder of one of Zatanna's former employees, who died while performing in one of Loxias's shows.

When they find Loxias, he reveals that he is not, in fact, who they think he is. He's the Joker. He manages to get the upper hand on Zee and Bruce at first, but Bruce breaks the stage chair he was tied to in order to free Zatanna from the tank Joker put her in. Unfortunately, the Joker escapes.

They go hunting for Batman's arch-enemy and eventually manage to find him, still using the Loxias identity, planning to kill the crowd of his fans. Luckily, Zee is awesome.

Batman runs into Zatanna again about ten issues later. This time she's in town on her own business. But she's not too sad about seeing Bruce again.

They dash off to discover that it's the new ventriloquist, Peyton, who causing the disturbance. During the ensuing fracas, Bruce is kidnapped by Peyton. She does the usual for villains, acts a little crazy, tells Bruce her life story, leaves a ticking bomb on his chest... And that's where Zee comes back in.

Peyton ends up getting pulled into the water.

And thus goes Zee's gueststar appearances during Dini's Detective Comics, with the exception of a few already posted excerpts from DC #847 and DC #850.

I wish Dini would come back and write more stories about his wife and Batman.

I love the way Paul Dini writes Zatanna and I love how Dustin Nguyen (apparently pronounced "When") draws her.

I just love that she's in the 1% of DC characters who doesn't angst but simply moves on after something, and doesn't fall into the typical pratfalls that some superheroines do.

My favourite part is the "Well it's here and it's wearing a top hat"

Dustin Nguyen (apparently pronounced "When")

I've learned it as "Ngwin", with the "ng" sound almost silent (like "penguin" with the "pe" and half of the "n" sawed off)... though apparently different families pronounce it in their own way.

Hm, Zatanna seems a bit violent during the Joker part, with the rant about wanting him dead and the whole vampire bat thing. This stands out to me cuz in the Trick or Treat story, Scarecrow notes that Zatanna's more vengeful then she seems; I couldn't quite follow the story, but I think the ending implied that she caused this guy to OD.
Seems like Dini is trying to bring out a more violent side of Zatanna?

I thought the ending was Zatanna feeding the fear gas to Scarecrow.

At any rate, you're right about the amount of violence.

Gotta say, I loved the panels with Z in the lumpy sweatsuit. Cracked me up. Did she/does she have her own series? Worth checking out? Anyone?

She had a cancelled one I think, but I know Paul Dini is writing a Zatanna/Black Canary hardcover soon.

She had a 1993 mini that was horribly boring, with a neat cover design and guest appearance by Constantine. She had a 2003 one-shot by Dini and Rick Mays that was kickass and awesome and selling for 30$ with a 6$ cover price, so you might want to 'borrow' that. Her 2005 mini with Grant Morrison took her in a bit of a weird direction, playing her up as a kind of jaded stage magician, but it was still pretty good and had absolutely lovely art.

The Paul Dini Zatanna/Black Canary graphic novel is sort of "in development" in the sense that it may eventually happen.

From a recent interview with Didio on Newsarama, a Zatanna ongoing written by Dini is already well underway and they are just letting the SECRET ARTIST get enough issues under his/her belt in order to keep it coming out regularly. Sort of like Batwoman-turned-Detective Comics.

Mm. Reading about Bruce and Zatanna talking their trust issues over (and over, and over) was mildly interesting. But what I enjoyed most from these scans was how she so expertly turned the tables on the Joker by driving him even more delusional than usual. The Joker knows his chemistry, toxicology and psychological manipulation, but he doesn't know jack from magic. Well done Zee!

The art from Nguyen is fantastic, but I really preferred the 7 Soldiers of Victory Zatanna. I dunno, from these stories she doesn't seem like she has the equivalent power in her world as Dr.Strange in his...more like merely a magician who can also do some real magic, and occasionally teams up with Batman and discusses their relationship.

Being part of yet another 'generic Joker story' doesn't help, espceially when drawn by that guy, whatsisface. Something doesn't feel right about his art, I get a similar feeling when I look at it to when I look at that of Greg Land.

Well, that's part of the inevitable problem of Batman, a street-level character, hanging out with JLA types, who are frequently pretty cosmic. Zee's power fluctuates a lot - sometimes she's really epic and dire, like "planet-warping League-level threat if she ever went bad" kind of thing, usually she's more middling, like Red Tornado-scale "could flatten a city if she wanted but it'd take her ten minutes" ... and when it's just her and Batman, she's "could feasably defeat as many as ten bad guys at once." Because how else does Bruce even begin to contribute?

If you think about it, Zatanna and Bruce would make a very good couple. She's one of the few women he knows - intimately, I mean - that doesn't have any psychological hang-ups or weird obsessions. There's Catwoman, but she's got her own problems, and her criminal past is a bit of a problem; there's Silver St. Cloud, but her learning that he's Batman kinda shattered that relationship (which is a pity, she's awesome), there's, eh, whatsername, Lew Moxon's daughter, but she's a crook, etc., etc. Zee is one of the few women out there who could really deal with his being Batman - she's calm and collected, she's perfectly capable of holding her own against him if he gets into one of his I'm-a-scary-bat mindsets, she's known him as both Bruce and the Dark Knight, she's a superhero herself, so she can understand and empathize with that side of him, and last but not least, she has a flourishing career of her own, so whenever he's getting a little too hard to handle, she can simply go on a road tour and give him a chance to calm down. Also, having a magician in a relationship with an ultra-rationalist like Bats, who only believes in magic because he kinda has to, given how much of it he's seen, would be very interesting.
Also, 9-year-old Zee is a real cutiepie. She seems like the sort of kid who it would be fun to hang out with, if you were her age, or babysit if you weren't.

It really does amuse me that Batman and John Constantine share a girlfriend/friend.

Though John and Zatanna dated when she was in college, while, as shown above, Bruce has known her for roughly twenty years or something.

Y'know, I sort of like Zatanna, but then I read her saying things like "I'd like to know if I have to apologize again for the worst mistake in my life" and that makes me be angry at her for the rest of the arc. You mindraped one of your friends, and then you failed for years to fix it. No matter how many times Bruce makes you apologize for it, you'll still be in the wrong.

Other than that, I do like the way Dini writes her. "Well, it's there and it's wearing a top hat" is awesome, though I don't think they'd make a good couple at all, among others for the reasons Zee mentions.

Wasn't there talk of Dini writing a series about her, or is it the Black Canary/Zatanna team-up?

I liked that when the Joker slit her throat and locked her in a water filled cabinet to drown, she realised she only had a chance to cast one spell (by writing the words with her blood on the inside of the cabinet). She could have broken the cabinet but would have still been bleeding to death. Instead she chose to heal her throat and trusted Batman to rescue her, because she had utter confidence that he would.

Thanks so much for putting this up!! I love both of these arcs (and Heart of Hush) and think more people need to be familiar with them!

It's this that makes me want Zatanna to be a semi-regular character in Streets of Gotham. Even though we won't get any chemistry with Bruce, I love when she's creatively depicted as an almost street-level fighter, which is what we see from this and the Halloween one-shot.

On the other hand, she could easily fit in as a guest character in Gotham City Sirens because her relationship with Selina is so interesting, between Heart of Hush and the stuff I've seen of her in Catwoman (which I'd still like to see again, as I don't have those issues).

It's no coincidence that both of those new titles are going to be written by Dini.
