It's okay, Babs, I think the flying monkeys are scary, too!

(Actually, the Wicked Witch always scared me the most because she wanted to hurt poor little Toto!)

And to tie in with the couple of neat Frankenstein posts from the last little while, Kate Beaton on the Shelleys:

D:

Another Kate Beaton one:

Oh, Rex Murphy. XD

Okay, also this:

The Byron & Shelleys comic is one of my favorites.

Mine too! Mary Shelley had a pretty messed up young life, I'm told.

Which is a shame, because her parents were apparently modern (by our standards) and nice apparently.

It's probably my favorite of all Kate Beaton's done so far. Though they're all exceedingly awesome.

Oh, Kate Beaton. Oh, Lord Byron.

Thanks for the post. Nice.

Also, yes. Toto.

Hey, she left out the part where Byron and Percy suddenly go off on a sailing trip with their new boytoy and crash and die.

Or so Wikipedia told me once.

What's hilarious is that Mary wrote Frankenstein as a part of a deal that they'd all write ghost stories, but when it came to actually write them, the guys all went outside to play or something. But she stayed in and wrote the book, and they never finished theirs.

Didn't Bram Stroke write Dracula on the same trip?

Those flying monkeys made me cry as a kid. True story. I don't blame Babs for being scared here! Although, looking closer at that scan, it actually looks like they took a picture of Dick and put Babs' head and boobs on it! You can see the collar and I think the weird way her butt sticks out is just his blacked-out tunic-tails. If that's true, that's hilarious. Dick really doe code female!

Also, now I really want to make a motivational poster with that picture that says: "SPAGHETTI: Ollie sucks at eating it."

Those flying monkeys still terrify my mother like nothing else. The hilarious thing is that my mother was a drill sergeant in the Army for the greater part of my life; she's pretty hardcore. But those monkeys terrify her.

This has always baffled me completely, as I always thought the flying monkeys were really cool instead of scary.

I'm glad SOMEONE else thinks that - I'm reading all these 'EEK! Flying monkeys!' posts, and I'm going 'what is WRONG with you people? They're the best PART!' I mean, granted, I'm going by the book version, not the movie's, but... I mean... they're MONKEYS! That FLY! How can any situation not be improved by the addition of flying monkeys? (Plus, if you go by the illustrations, they're green. GREEN flying monkeys! Oh, my cup done runneth over.)

Randomly, the most O_o aspect of the second Beaton comic is...there is at least one (fake...I think) picture of Suzuki semi-nude out on the internet, and the CBC put it there!

I remember that! And I don't think it's fake! It was years ago, the cover of Star Week (the Toronto Star's TV guide), and it had David Suzuki wearing nothing but a leaf over his crotch, and he was really fit and muscular.

The Byron/Shelley comic is only more interesting because I read the first Invisibles trade last week. I never quite grasped their relevance in that comic, beyond the way their discussions might relate to the overall theme. Maybe it's clearer in later issues.
Kate Beaton puts much less stock in the slow-burn than Grant Morrison, though. She gives with the jokes immediately, and I love her for it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Invisibles...does it have to do with Frankenstein or is it gothic/horror/sci-fi or something?

Well, the bald guy getting interrupted is Peter Mansbridge, and he's the 10 o'clock news and important-things anchor. He's generally smart and nice, but you will never see him break out into a full smile ever.

The guy interrupting him is David Suzuki, who's a scientist/environmentalist and for years has had an educational science show called The Nature of Things.

The guy at the end is Rex Murphy, who has an occasional segment on the 10 o'clock news.

Really, you get all the CBC personalities together for an election or something, it's like a drunken family reunion.
