Wow. Wowie wow.

So it wasn't just some weird one-off thing that made Reggie's work on Black Panter suck and suck alone? I think some of the BND storylines have been a bit tosh, but this takes the cake. Confrontation for confrontation's sake, I think.

I mean, I understand that the New Avengers were a bit of a ragtag group formed on the fly following the breakout on the Raft, but I didn't think they were this dickish. Also, despite the fact he's butted heads with Scott over Jean (although this seems much more like something amplified by the movies to make up a love triangle and given Famke Janssen something other to do than wig out and go Phoenixy), I don't think Logan is immature enough to look like he's hitting on someone's wife, and then stab said someone and give that 'shit happens during team play' excuse.

But then, this is Hudlin, and if the Black Panther happened to turn up here, then we'd inevitably see the NA bow down to T'Challa's overwhelming wisdom and superior intelligence.

*Mandatory posting of 'Spidey casually tossing Wolverine out a window' scene*

I like Luke's reaction here. Tony's lame 'He was too slippery to hold. Yeaaah....' is pretty good too.

Ask and ye shall receive.

That was totally Tony's inner geek acting up and letting Peter go at the "You're a nerd who finally got a hot girl" line.

Know what needs to be posted (if it hasn't already been)? The conversation between Peter and Invincible over while 'Vince isn't surprised Peter is married to someone like Mary Jane.

you know this is great. I totally now want to see a series of these two living as roommates...

"One's a radioactive, wise-cracking, young hero with spider-powers (who never dies! The other's an angry, short Canadian with pointy metal things coming out of his hands (who never dies)! Can these two manage to live and function together in a day to day life?"

They'd be the next Odd-Couple!

Thing is, we don't even see Wolverine hitting on MJ. All of it is speculation from Pete, and more than a little fueled by the Jarvis/Aunt May romance obviously brewing.

Doesn't mean Logan's not a dick though.

MJ doesn't deny it. Notice she asks if Peter thought she'd be attracted to Wolvie. Never does she say that he wasn't hitting on her.

In fact her asking the question seems to imply that he was.

Rather a different outcome than the newspaper strip, where Peter as Spidey suggests Wolvie go see Mary Jane's play. After the play Logan breaks into the backstage by threatening the guards, then hits on Mary Jane in the dressing room. Peter walks in and invites Logan out to dinner with them because he's such a lonely little hobo in the city.

Okay their are so many things wrong in these few pannel.

1. Why is Pete getting all angsty about Aunt May and Jarvis in the same room? He's too mature( he does mature doesn't he, not just repeating the Great Power speech over and over after he does something boneheaded, right) to think Jarvis can replace Uncle Ben in her life.
2. The shot with MJ and Logan looks abit weird. Sure it makes Wolv looks like he's eying her, but from that perspective, he looks like he's thinking her neck, ear, and cheek are the sexist things about her.
3. Why the heck is Wolverine so short? Peter is looking down at him, and that's plain unbelievable.
4. "Cool Down? Look Hedgehog". What kind of insult is that? Hedgehog? Was it because Logan's hair is blue?
5. Did Logan meant to stab Pete on accident or on purpose to shut him up?
5. Logan crying like a wuss while getting pummel on Spider-Man.... yeah, that doesn't work. Considering that guy manages to walk off deadly crashes, fatal bullet shots, and even explosions.
6. Blood makes you slippery? I'm pretty sure blood is the kind of liquid thats thick and gets sticky over time.
7. Did Peter's wound instantly healed? It disappeared. Or is it the color of he's suit?
8. Why is everyone on Wolverine's case, Spider-Man seems to have the anger problems in this.

Wolverine IS short; he is -- or pre-Jackman, was -- 5'2" to Peter's 5'10". That's one of the few things that's right here.

1. I believe it's that he didn't notice until it's kind of right in his face, and needs a little time to process. In the meantime, he's making with the "la, la, la, can't hear you" jokes because MJ knows full well not to take them too seriously.
2. Yeah, perspective there is weird. It kind of looks like he's staring at her right shoulder. You'd think he'd either be looking up toward her eyes or down toward, well...
3. He's short. It's canon. Hugh Jackman is the only taller Wolverine version I know of. Peter is not terribly tall, but he's generally not portrayed as all that short.
4. Unknown. His hair is pointy?
5. *shrugs* Dunno.
6. Note the line by Wolverine shortly before this, referring to "nerd who finally got a hot chick". Tony is arguably a nerd. He may take offense to the remark. The slippery line is just him bullshitting an explanation.
7. Meh? His shirt is red. If it's small but bleeding heavily, it might not be super visible from all angles. That being said, you'd think it would be easier to see anyways.
8. They both seem to be having anger issues at the moment. However, Spidey is the one who was bleeding all over.

For some reason, it is really bothering me that in the cover art, Wolverine is taller than MJ, but in the actual book he's shorter than MJ.

Tony's "Blood made him slippery" excuse is still hilarious to me.

I confess that I bought this trade, simply because I love the WTFery of Wolverine hitting on MJ.

OOC 1: Wolvie rarely stabs people accidentally, and hasn't been a character who would drag out a fight more if it did happen since the early X-Men days when everyone was pissy.
OOC 2: why are the rest of the Avengers standing around letting the two duke it out when one is injured?

gah. Hudlin does throw in a few good lines and I think he can be a good writer at times, but he really doesn't get the characters he's writing, especially X-Men.

In the first bit their heads are huuuuuge! And MJ's got weird inverted thumbs on her "everybody calm down" panel.

Pete's definitely the one with the anger issues here (which is weird when Logan's the one that it ISN'T). Also with you guys on the dumb "Owwie, Peter. Stop with the elbow attack!" Seriously?

Yeah, there's a lot of problems with the art here as far as body size and head size goes. In general I don't find the style here appealing period, such as the first face shot of MJ. Her facial features just don't look right.

I wouldn't say Spider-man has anger issues on this. He just got stabbed several inches into his chest, and about 5 inches away from his heart. If we're talking about the whole getting into Logan's face earlier, yeah that's pretty OOC. When they've teamed up they usually work out their problems and respect each other by the end.

After the ORIGIN limited series, one can assume Wolverine has a red-head fetish. Of course, the only red-heads he can genuinely say he loved were Heather Hudson (she's the reason he left Alpha Flight) and Jean Grey.

"Can Scott Summers confirm that for me?" A cute line, and certainly Peter knows Cyclops' real name. But would Peter have any idea Logan was in love with Jean Grey?

While they've never been shown gossiping (and if they did somebody'd bring up the time Spider-man smooched Jean), there are canon scenes where Spider-man goes, "Hey, there's Scott and Jean!" then swings down to say hello. Peter's generally been shown comfy with the original team and the New Mutants but a little leery of the second generation.

the time Spider-man smooched Jean

Really? Would you happen to know the issue number?

Seems like Spidey's macked on all the original lady members of famous superteams. He dated Sue Storm once, had an extended team-up with the Wasp which included a lot of flirting, and now he's smooched Jean Grey. And IIRC he was kinda flirty with Wonder Woman during a DC/Marvel crossover, until MJ showed up to remind him he's married.

I've been googling for awhile, and its amazingly difficult to find. So many cartoons clogging the infonet! I remember some of the story, Spider-man was collapsed due to an attack by Morbius, the team was the original X-men and Xavier. At the end of the book Spiderman insists on expressing his gratitude, leaps over the boy X-men (who protest), pulls up the bottom of his mask and smooches Jean. He leaps away, while the boys grumble and Jean giggles.

I believe it was while Peter was at ESU and the art was good, either Romita senior or Byrne.

Gah, everything about this is bad. The whole thing stinks of plot over characterization, as in the plot points are predetermined and the writer fails to build to them organically and so everyone's actions seem way off-kilter. Just one example, everyone reacts to Wolverine's "you're the nerd who got a hot chick, congratulations, doesn't mean everyone's after her" line as if it were unbelievably offensive when it's just not. The writer's idea was Wolverine say something that sends Spider-Man beserk and swings the team's opinion against him to the point they root for Spidey (and Iron Man lets him go), but he couldn't write dialogue well enough to make the words and the reactions mesh.

All through this it's the same. There are a couple of good lines in here (probably thought of while he was coming up with the outline of the plot), but by and large it's just bad. The man just can't write well. Normally "badly written" is used to decry poor characterization or flaws in plotting or just plain bad or inappropriate ideas, but this goes beyond that to just plain poor writing. The man literally cannot craft words well enough to convey his own ideas.

Man alive, we are SO lucky that Hudlin didn't have a stint on Spidey or the X-Men (he didn't did he?), because oy yoy yoy, the stuff he gets wrong here. I'm going to go over it one by one:

1: Peter is NOT that prickly over his wife. Sure, he loves her, and is therefore protective of her, but they've been married for years at this point - I'm pretty sure he's more secure than that.

2: Neither is Petey that insecure regarding Aunt May. I mean, it looks to me her and Jarvis were just having a pleasant chat - what's he so up in arms about? 'You're TALKING to my AUNT? How DARE you? Get out, you masher!'

3: Peter KNOWS Logan - he's known him for years. It's not like they're best buds, but I'd always thought that they had a fairly congenial relationship - I'm pretty sure he wouldn't react that way if he saw him talking to his wife.

4: Logan is nowhere near as psycho as he's portrayed here. He's actually more or less in the right during the first few scans - it's Spidey who's being the jerk - but the 'nobody mouths off to me like that' line and the 'take it like a man' attitude he assumes having just SPIKED SPIDEY IN THE GUT HARD ENOUGH FOR HIM TO PASS OUT FROM BLOOD LOSS, are just plain and simply out of character - not to mention how EAGER he is to fight Spidey in the first place, or the 'you're a nerd who got lucky' line. The man's a professional; he wouldn't be acting as petty as this.

5: He isn't a wimp, either - he wouldn't be whining about how much Spidey's punches are hurting him. The man has had his HEART RIPPED FROM HIS BODY, for cryin' out loud - he's gone up against the Hulk, the Juggernaut, Magneto. He is NOT the type to whimper about Spidey not fighting by the Marquess of Queensbury rules.

6: This is actually an art comment, but I don't care for this version of Aunt May.
