I forget who, but someone asked for scans of when Spidey owned the entire X-Men team, so here you go. The cover and three pages from issue three of the Secret Wars crossover.

Then, one issue later in scans I ain't got, Wasp hands them (and Magneto) a similarly embarrassing short fight (Wolverine, I think, even calls it such) when she escapes from Magneto's base (before spending the rest of the crossover being comically inept or dead). One almost gets the impression Shooter doesn't like them much.

Yeah, one can clearly see who was more popular at the time :P

I mean, as evilish as Xavier was back then, why not just switch Spidey's brain off?

This is 1985. Xavier honestly wasn't that bad at that point in time. More than a little paternalistic and completely unable to relate to Storm or Cyclops as equals, sure, but he wasn't a bad guy.

Yeah, mine too. It's funny, in retrospect he comes across in Secret wars as being a bit like 80es Guy Gardner at his worst. Which to be fair is pretty much the personality that Wolverine started out with. Although by around this time Claremont was starting to give the guy some real depth.

Seeing this fight always just made me want to see Spidey to get the everloving crap kicked out of him.

Sometimes I think that Spider-Man is one of the most powerful heroes on Marvel Earth, and he's just never realized it. Or maybe he does, but doesn't care.

Sure, there's plenty of guys stronger than him, but most of them aren't as fast. There's plenty who're faster, but most of them aren't as strong. He's certainly the strongest out of the street level heroes, at least.

Shooter saw Spider-Man as one of the company's flagship characters and it really showed through all of Secret Wars. I mean, other scenes include him one-shotting Piledriver of the Wrecking Crew and whaling the living daylights out of Titania and then tossing her away while she can't lay a hand on him.

Really, the way his speed and spider-sense were presented back in the day, this is the way things should often go if he's not distracted; he's just not going to get hit unless his foe is *really* good and fast, or has some gimmick he's not expecting. It's just that more recently many writers have conveniently forgotten the speed, the spider-sense, or both, whenever it's more convenient to the story for him to lose because... well, just because. So now he at least periodically looks like a wimp, fails to dodge objects *thrown* by Bullseye when he can easily dodge bullets, and so on

Part of Spidey's strength is that people forget who strong and tough he is because he's such a jokester.

But he dial out some serious beatdowns.

Yeah, certainly someone like Wolverine shouldn't really present much of a challenge to Spiderman. (Though I did love their fight in Jim Owsley/Christopher Priest's original Spiderman versus Wolverin oneshot..)

But yeah, I mean didn't Wolvie get his ass handed to him by that pre-cog fighter in his own title. (The one that took down Taskmaster, and as Wolverine noted at the time that shouldn't really be an easy feat..)

With that in mind then, The Spider sense should be an ENORMOUS advantage to someone who already had heightened speed, agility, leaping abilities and Strength, so when you add those to his webbing and his ability to fight you standing on any surface, it isn't too much of a stretch to see most of the X-men having problems with him.

Hmm...it's funny though, seeing these pages again sometimes makes me wish to go on some of the comic battle board forums with Spidey's humiliating one panal utter disregard for Wolverine as a signature pic. Just to see how many of the more excitable fanboys get riled up by it. Though I admit that probably would be a bit too much of a trollish behaviour...But the temptation's there! ;)
