Additional preview pages from Amazing Spider-Man #601

From the review: "Not only that, but the writer also gets some great comedic mileage out of the idea that Peter may or may not have had an accidental drunken one-night-stand with his flatmate, Michele Gonzales. Some people might feel that this behaviour is a little out-of-character, but in my opinion it humanises Peter, putting him in a situation that many of his adult readers will be able to relate to, and emphasising his status as the everyman of the Marvel Universe as a result."

Wow this is such an interesting "What if?" that shows us what it would be like if Peter was a 20something slacker that has no bearing on the 616 Spider-man....

I didn't know bad sitcom characters tended to read comic books.

I have to admit, "spiderfail.org" is a pretty funny line. We should make this blog, and review issues of BND on it.

Dear Marvel,

Yes, readers enjoy flawed characters, even deeply flawed characters. Flawed != made of fail.

Kisses!

Why is there a leg severed leg in bed with them? Severed and mangled, actually, since it seems to have an extra joint, as well as being in a position in which it couldn't possibly be connected to either of their bodies. And why is Peter wearing makeup in that first scan? And why does he have fake eyebrows on?

I'll be over in the corner, repeating "If Stan Lee didn't write it, it doesn't count" to myself until the nausea goes away.

You know what? I'm gonna say it.

If it takes Peter getting amnesiac drunk and pulling a possible one-night stand in order for you to RELATE to him BETTER, I JUDGE YOU.

You know what? I'm going to say it. You know the Peter I could relate to? The responsible guy who married the woman he loved and kept trying to be the best human being he could be and kept being a superhero even when most people hated his superhero identity.

You want a terrific example of "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" Marvel? Here's one for ya. How about a Peter Parker who's married to a gorgeous woman who loves him, has a fairly successful job, and is generally doing pretty good at life. And yet he still risks life and limb, night after night, protecting a city that pretty much hates him. Because he has great powers. And it's the responsible thing to do.

A Peter that gets so roaring drunk that he can't remember if he irresponsibly slept with his roommate? Yeah, can't relate to that in the slightest.

The art is odd, but I like it. And the mood of the story too, it's a bit like the awesome Jenkins/Buckingham run (aka BND before BND).
So he lives with Vin's sister, now? Looks like a fun cohabitation.(note to myself: stop reading previews while you still have almost one year of stories to read)

I..I'm sorry, I just threw up a little bit. Pizza just doesn't taste the same coming back up. Now, where was I?

1. Drunken sex where no one remembers what happens isn't something most comic readers relate to. Sure, 20 something frat guys can, but let's be honest. They pick on comic books nerds.

2. Given Peter's strength, if he was so out of control what would have really happened? Booze does tend to fuck up this kind of thing. Which is why I cannot ever remember Peter getting drunk before.

3. If you're going to have sex with someone is is way beyond drunk, like repeating himself and slurring his words badly, why are you surprised and angry that he can't remember it?

"Not only that, but the writer also gets some great comedic mileage out of the idea that Peter may or may not have had an accidental drunken one-night-stand with his flatmate, Michele Gonzales. Some people might feel that this behavior is a little out-of-character, but in my opinion it humanizes Peter, putting him in a situation that many of his adult readers will be able to relate to, and emphasizing his status as the everyman of the Marvel Universe as a result."

Um, no...What this particular scene tells me is following:

1. Peter Parker, as a guy whose whole mantra is "with great power comes greater responsibility" comes off as an IRRESPONSIBLE jack-ass, as well as being out-of-character,
2. The whole "did Peter have a drunken one night stand with his roommate, Michele" has been poorly set-up, given that this is only the THIRD comic where we've seen Peter and Michele Gonzales have any scenes together at all.
3. Out of all the possibilities they could have taken with Peter's new roommate, this was the most uninspired and cliched route they could've taken.
4. It makes Michele Gonzales just as unlikeable as her brother, Vin (which is why I call her "Vin Gonzales with boobs") and obviously makes it seem she was only added to the supporting cast as a contrived plot device instead of a legitimate character in order to achieve an end result--specifically Peter, once again, having to look for a new place to live, and the eventual confrontation with Vin, who already dislikes him, over how his old roommate "took advantage" of his sister.
And 5. It completely distracts from what should be the central focus of the book: "Why, after almost year (Marvel time) since she and Peter "broke up," is Mary Jane back in New York?"

Which is why this development (and notice how it seems to be just causally dismissed by Peter as just another example of "Parker Luck) is what qualifies as nothing but FAIL!
