Wednesday Comics #1
Warning: As those of you who've picked up an issue of Wednesday Comics know, these pages are HUGE. Those with slower connections should keep that in mind.

First panel of the third row on the Metal Man page, does anyone recognize the guy in gray with a brimmed hat? He looks way too conspicuous to just be a background extra.

I would like WW so much more if the text were easier to read. But I think it's really, really pretty.

I think my favorites were The Flash and Metamorpho.

Agreed. The flowery text is just needless.

Yeah, that was a very bad choice of typeface. Disappointing.

And I agree on Flash...it was awesome.

I can read trhe text. It's the psychadelic colouring that's giving me problems.

The awesome and the pretty is killing me. Can't wait until this gets published around here.
Also, I'm rebooting my personal canon to include thw Wonder Woman sequence.
Rebooting in 3, 2, 1...

Pure fun and delightfulness! This was so worth the hype!

The first issue anyway. I'm pleasantly surprised that it hasn't flopped so far, as I feared it would. Still, here's hoping everyone checks it out!

Huh, I figured pages from it'd be against the rules since each have a different creators.

I still like the art for the Wonder Woman one though I wish they'd given him an inker or something because I really didn't like how incomplete the color on pencils(at least it looks like that) feels and how hard it was to read in some parts on the page.

The Supergirl one is quite cute.

One of the best "gimmicks" either of the big comapanies have come up wth in years. These are for the true fans of the comic medium. :) :)

on Metal Men -

I so don't even begin to give a crap about the Metal Men and never have, but I could stare at Garcia-Lopez art forever, so aces in my book.

on Wondy -

The newsprint medium is doing Caldwell's art no favors. The samples from his blog were a lot cleaner and easier to parse - it's coming across here like, half as gorgeous as it actually is. Also, nits to pick: "Last of the Amazons" is kind of a weird and ill-fitting title, but perhaps it will be explained further. "I've never talked to animals before" excises one of her few relatively unique and thematic powers, but perhaps she just means "in a human language." We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

That said, mmm, tasty mythology. ^_^ The "not a superhero" conversation is a nice touch, too. And "collect the Seven Stars" already sounds epic. Looks good, as far as first pages go, oh my yes.

on Supergirl -

I miss my dogs. That is all.

I see your scanner must be bigger than mine, though you did pick at least one of the ones I was going to post (it is really fascinating to see Didio actually doing something tangible).
I've been showing my copy to everyone I know, this is the comic that has me most excited this summer.

I actually just bought this today and I loved it, the only thing I didn't like was the Wonder Woman page. It was too crowded and the art was sketchy, and I'm pretty sure one could have been avoided by stopping the other.

Also, Mercury is totally rocking that afro.

I love Amanda Conner's art on the Supergirl story. With the return of the classic costume and Kara approaching Peej-esque proportions (not to mention a super-powered Streaky), I wonder if this is meant to be pre-Crisis Kara or (even better IMO), a grown-up future Kara.

The colors on the Wondy strip are to die for, but I can't really call myself a fan of the art because it's so unfinished looking.

And I have no idea how I feel about the content. There's the calling Themyscira "Paradise Island" which always earns a reflexive twitch, there's the apparent unfamiliarity with her powers--even her powers of flight, and for some reason the term mortals world, while technically more accurate, sits unwell with me.

That said, from what little there is to go on it looks like this could be a good chance for Diana to go and do epic things like she does best, and for Diana to just be Diana without any of the crap we've got going on in canon right now. Of course, since this will apparently be her first time off island, there's going to be a little more naivety than I would like, but I can deal with that.

I dunno, I guess only time will tell.

Spot the Batman Returns reference, win a prize.

And holy moley, someone managed to scan this monster. First thing I said to myself, picking it up in the store, was "I don't care how good anything in this is, I can't scan a page."

I finally got around to reading this last night and I thought it was terrific. I love the retro look and feel of the packaging and, for the most part, the artwork and the stories.

My favorites were The Flash (but Iris knew he was the Flash at this point, no?), Supergirl and Metal Men. Least liked Teen Titans (did not like anything there ), Adam Strange (liked the over the top dialog, not the artwork) and Wonder Woman (the artwork seemed very "Disney" to me -- maybe it's those eyes on Diana).

The one thing I did not like was the price. I think if DC was really smart they should have diverted some of their marketing dollars from the "After Watchman" promotion to support a reduced price. Selling this at $2.99 or, more aggressively $2.50, would do more to get new folks into LCS especially in combination with the huge amount of PR they are doing on this. They could have tied into ongoing books and the "Johnny DC" line and picked up new readers. But then maybe they are just betting that there are enough suckers like me that will shell out $3.99 a week for this.

All right, in order:

An interesting take on Wonder Woman - the artwork is eye-catching, and the colors are (it turns out) appropriately dreamy. Also, I like the idea of Diana flying by 'swimming' through the air - I've had dreams where I could do that. But there are way, way too many itsy-bitsy little panels for my taste - very, very crowded.

The Supergirl one is extremely cute - I love how the puppies are all 'Yay! Our hero!' when Krypto passes by, and how the dog on the sidewalk reacts to Streaky and Krypto, respectively. Great background details. (I wonder why this is set in Gotham instead of Metropolis, though?)

*Ahem* MEEEEEETAL MEEEEEEEN! I love the Metal Men! I'm not quite sure why this seems to be set in the '70's (although that may just be Doc Magnus's idea of current fashion), but the characterization is spot-on, and I like the artwork. I'm-a lookin' forward to more a' dis one.
