An SD1.0 repost and a genuine "Grail Piece" acqusition!! :)
Chances are that if you owned ANY DC licensed merchandise in the late 70's or early 80's it either featured art by, or based on, work done by Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez and Dick Giordano, two stalwarts of the organisation, who produced acres of top notch, lovely licensing art.

The art would be used from notepads to action figures, from t-shirts to underoos, and so had to be both simple and stylish, easily reproduced and instantly recognisable. They could hardly have asked for better!

The attached pics are scanned as best I can, and hopefully might bring a little happiness to your desktop should you wish to tweak them that way.

First the gentlemen... (Note that despite being out on his own for years by the time this was used, poor Dick still get's the batlogo behind his name. Of course, few people would be paying much attention to his LOGO)

And the ladies too of course, with Bab's up first supplying some equal opportunities hot ass (I may not be interested, but I can appreciate the aesthetics). I LOVE the Catwoman logo for some reason. It would never do as a comic headline, but it would work on a T-shirt, which is where this one appeared I think.

Here we see the old secret identity switcheroo.... Though Bruce... a BROWN dinner jacket? ICK! Rest assured Alfred will be taking a flamethrower to it first chance he gets, if you're lucky he'll let you take it off first.

And the bad guys get a look in too of course

A couple of heroic clashes. I love the Riddler one here, the butterfly net for BATMAN rather than him is an inspired touch.

And a couple of images of the Happy Couple... I'm sorry, I mean the Dynamic Duo (Yeah Dick you swing in there crotch first, there's not a bad guy would put up a fight!)

The artists did more, MANY more, for a wider variety of heroes than the Batfamily of course. We got Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash to name but a few

These, however, are the largest colour images I have, taken from a calendar issued in the UK a couple of years ago.

And the real reason for this repost is that I have finally obtained a genuinely classic "Grail Piece", the ORIGINAL art for the Robin turnaround...

Click on the pic below to be taken to my comicartfans gallery, where my new prize acquisition is smugly sitting! :)

Man, Dick is such a cutie pie. I love him as Nightwing, but there is always a place in my heart for him as Robin.

'cause of, you know, the short pants.

wow, such GORGEOUS work from the days of yesteryear. Really takes me back when these were the images that introduced me to these characters, and that I fell in love with.

As much as I dig Tim's Robin costumes, there's a simplicity to Dick's original costume that just works so damn well, even by today's standards.

Dick is clearly enjoying the catwalk more than Bruce.

LOL.

I love it when characterization comes through so clearly in art.
Go Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez and Dick Giordano!

You really did do very well, Icon!

Lovely stuff. Will defiantly will use for reference with sketching or pixeling.

P.S. The fifth picture doesn't enlarge.

Should enlarge now, thanks for spotting that.

And as reference materials go, the 1980's DC Style Guide is GOLD!

these are wonderful, thank you for posting them. Clinically speaking,(ok and speaking as one attracted to the male form) not only is the anatomy wonderful, but especially for Robin, the posture and carriage. I mean the muscles and the tendons and the ... never mind babbling... thanks again for this !!!!

Babble away, t's what we're here for! Completely agreed too, the anatomy in all of these is wonderful, and another reason I could never get excited about so many of the 90's Image artists (and their ilk). With the likes of Garcia-Lopez, Newton, Perez, Novick, Dillon and Swan (to name but a few) steadily putting out their work, a innate awareness of actual human anatomy was taken as a given, not as something we should get excited about. Even then though, there were those who were excpetional at it, and Garcia-Lopez remains one of the masters.

Some NICE stuff here. The Joker one would be perfect if he weren't wearing a yellow hat. (Seriously, when has he EVER worn a yellow hat? What is he, Dick Tracy?) Also, that Riddler one is very clever - the question mark turning into the cursive logo is an inspired touch.

Perhaps he took it off Dick Tracy.... Now that would be a comic to read... (Actually, I think it's just a colouring error)

Yeah, it's probably just an error - shame, though; a Dick Tracy/Batman teamup would be something to read.

I can see them facing off against each other across a table, eac trying to outdo the other with their deformed villain

"Penguin"

"The Brow!"

"Two Face!"

"Flat Top!"

"Clayface!"

"Prunceface"

"The JOKER!"

"....No shit, really?"

Considering that just about all the Dick Tracy villains you mentioned are dead - Tracy takes care of his bad guys real permanent-like - such a scene might have to take place in the context of the movie version, where they're all part of the same mob.
Come to think of it, if Batman was also the movie version - by which, of course, I mean the original Tim Burton movie - that might actually make for a REALLY interesting team-up. The two movies are actually very similar, in a way - they both feature spectacular artificial worlds dominated by mob-related crime, and watched over by a lone crimefighter with a distinctive outfit. Tracy's nameless city is almost a technicolor mirror version of Gotham, minus the more gothic aspects. I can picture Tracy having a 'where does he get those wonderful toys?' moment, too - given his fondness for the two-way wrist radio, he would probably be severely jealous of Batman's arsenal of gadgets. Come on, tell me you can't see this working - the black-rubber body-armored version of Bats alongside Dick Tracy in his yellow trenchcoat, the Joker and Big Boy trying to out-ham one another (THAT would be a sight), Tess Trueheart and Vicki Vale bonding over cups of coffee - it's a natural!
(The only thing that WOULDN'T be able to happen, unfortunately, would be a Kid/Robin rivalry, because Robin isn't in the Burton films. Oh, well - you can't have everything.)

Yay, thanks for these. :) Your collection is admirable.

I would lament that Selina's not also in a turnaround, but it's not like we don't get 100 chances to see her booty for each chance to see Bruce's. That logo of hers is nice and out of the ordinary. But let's lose the whiskers, I'm not a fan of facial hair, especially for women.

For that matter, the term "turnaround" is always followed by "Stick it out!" in my head.

Yeah, Bruce's brown suit is very 70s. Completely fails with a red cummerbund and bow tie - is it supposed to be a tux or not? Maybe as a three piece business suit, brown since Clark monopolized navy blue.

Fredric Wertham was right! The Batman and Batgirl are quite nearly naked, all but for colouring. That is also one well defined Robin. I do like how his costume has a little more heft to it, in the vest and shirt.

Yes, he's drawing it as a tunic over a T-shirt and as such it SHOULD be a slightly bulkier looking costume that the single layer spandex of Batman and Batgirl.
