NEW TITANS #101: Dick vs. Roy
I thought I'd post one of the earliest Dick Grayson vs. Roy Harper fights I know of, and send out a request for other "Dick vs. Roy" brawls.

In NEW TITANS #101 (the TEEN had been dropped), Sgt. Steel has contacted Arsenal saying he doesn't want Nightwing in charge of the Titans anymore. Nightwing is still angry over his wedding to Starfire going so wrong and Kori going into a coma.

"Superheroes in Metropolis, Gotham City, Central City, Star City, etc. is one thing. But regular people live in New York!"

How long did Wally have those big white coverings on his eyes? I remember his getting them in FLASH #50 with a more "metallic" costume, but not when he got rid of them.

Pantha had a lot to learn about tact, although she did know that a crazy person shouldn't be in charge. The X-Men learned that about Wolverine ages ago.

Checkmate do something unethical? Nooo.

Well, I'm certain that if Roy explains everything to Dick in a calm and rational way... Ah, who am I kidding?

Dick isn't wearing the disco suit, but it isn't quite sold black with a few blue lines yet either.

The government running superhero teams? Well, we all know *that* could never happen in a mainstream comic book.

So, wait. Roy being a drug addict is why he would "give in" to the government? Of course, during CIVIL WAR Captain America seemed to say that Tony's alcoholism was the reason he was "giving in" to the big bad government.

Violence will solve everything!

So, Dick sees a genuine difference of opinion as treason. He learned a lot from Batman, didn't he? Of course, Batman doesn't have "friends" since they always turn on you.

"Sat up all night while you were detoxing?" I think Marv Wolfman might be playing a little fast and loose with DC History here.

Wait, Dick thinks Bruce was wrong about something? Wow.

Dick leaves, telling Donna "Batman also taught me never to wear out my welcome."

Are there any more Nightwing vs. Arsenal fights out there?

Yuck. Trying to turn the DCU into Marvel. Always a crap idea.

Well, this was 1993, and CIVIL WAR was over ten years away. However, I *think* the Avengers were under the preview of the United Nations at this time.

There was the threat of a Mutant Registration Act in Marvel at this time too. It's still an obvious reference, what with Roy constantly referring to "metagenetics."

The Mutant Registration Act had been around since the mid-80's, to be fair.

Agent Gyrich enforced quotas and limitations upon the Avengers back in the 70s or 80s I think. Distrust of Big Government used to be a healthy staple of popular culture.

Actually it's generally prevelant under people who claim to be for small gov't, but large military where it shows up

Here I thought this might have been Roy's intervention to get Dick to stop wearing the "Disco-wing" costume.

He'd shifted to the fugly post-Titans Hunt one a couple of years early.

First off, everyone is wearing silly pants it seems.

Dick and Roy were never together during his drug story, but I always figure that was mostly because DC didn't want Robin anywhere near a drug story, so I can accept MW retroactively saying that of course his friends supported him and we didn't see it.

Finally, I hope one day Tim and Dick bond over the times they both went kinda crazy when people died during their formative years.

Some retroactive flashbacks about how the Teen Titans and the Justice League reacted to Roy doing heroin would be cool.

Or how about when Bruce died?
Or is that just wishful thinking? The bonding, I mean. Not the dying.

::sigh:: Wishful thinking on the bonding so far, dammit.

IIRC it has now been amended so that Dick did help Roy through his withdrawal.

Yes, I believe Marv Wolfman first had Dick mention helping Roy through heroin withdrawal in the story he wrote about them for Action Comics when DC published it weekly. The story when the two of them chased down Cheshire and Lian. So by this time it was well established.

Mmm. A little Dick and Roy, roughhousing, mano-a-mano. Never a bad thing. That bad Nightwing outfit? Makes it just *that* much better.

I have to admit that I am so glad this era of the Titans is over. (Mostly because of those horrible pants, but the rest of it isn't that good, either)

the entire arc starting when Mirage showed up through the NW/Starfire wedding and beyond was just terrible. Of all the times in their relationship for them to get married...

Remember the Disco suit was replaced by this version by Mirage pretending to be Starfire. At the same time Mirage-as-Starfire cut Dick's hair and gave him the mullet. She mumbled something about being the 90's and needing to look that way. The hair cut was as unforgivable as pretending to be Starfire to sleep with Dick. I was actually going to post the scenes of the hair cut as part of 'Halloween Week' (cause it was THAT scary) but was having scanning difficulties.

There were a couple in Outsiders, I recall. One training scrap where Dick pulled a gun on Roy to see if he was over being shot, and one where they actually fought over Dick being all closed off and mean to everyone

Also, a brief one in Nightwing during that story where Dick pretended to be a bad guy to infiltrate Deathstroke's band of merry men.

Ah yes, Bill Jaaska -- quite possibly the worst Titans artist ever.

He also did some issues of Mike Grell's Sable, back when Marv W was writing it.

(Supposedly Wolfman and Jaaska were pals -- which is about the only logical reason I can think of for Jaaska getting ANY work.)

The Titans were by far my favorite team back when these issues were coming out, but the art from issue #100 and beyond was so eye-bleedingly awful that I dropped the book like a hot rock.

It's really too bad they couldn't have held on Tom Grummett a while longer. Mullets aside, I liked his work on the 'Titans Hunt' storyline and the costume designs he introduced. However, it seemed like he was the only artist who could make all of them work.

To make matters worse, you can practically feel Wolfman running out of ideas as you turn the pages. Wolfman and Perez deserve a great deal of praise for creating the Titans franchise, which for quite some time was DC's most successful comic by a wide margin, but by this time it had become painfully apparent that Marv had stayed too long at the proverbial dance.
