Return of Mr. J in comics
Words cannot express my love for these two pages.

Upcoming Gotham City Sirens preview can be found here: http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2009/09/25/will-the-joker-cross-paths-with-the-gotham-city-sirens/

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

I'm LOL'ing at the juxtaposition of his melodramatic tantrum and the sheer amount of pictures he has of Harley that he has to destroy. Also the fact that he has a Harley doll.

But I think this solves the mystery of how Mr. J is coming back in comics. (Wearing the ol' zoot suit, and not a new costume. Coughcoughcough) EDITED To add: I LOL'd over this. Alley-catting means gang banging. HAHAAHAHA. That's hilarious.

If this isn't some sort of imposter, I'll be greatly peeved at Dini pulling off his usual "I STILL WRITE FOR THE DCAU" bullshit. It's like the man has the mental equivalent of his fingers in his ears, and it's just juvenile. This is just as bad as Ultimate Pyro being written as an evil rapist in Ultimates 3.

I'm not about to start the "Morrison's Joker Is Better/Worse" debate...it's just, you know. Continuity should be continuity. Just up-and-reintroducing the Joker like this, without any explanation as to how he got his scars fixed or why he hasn't been in direct competition with Black Mask or Two-Face or reacting to Batman's death or the emergence of a new Batman and a new Red Hood or why he hasn't been doing, you know, anything notable lately - that's either very stupid, very lazy, very arrogant, or some horrifying combination of all three.

Poor show, Dini. But then again, that's not very surprising.

It's, and I hesitate to make two such comparisons twice in one discussion...but it's what I would have expected to see in Rulk. "Looky Here, Everybody! My Nice Little Pet Mary-Sue Gets To meet Her Big Daddy-Sue! Lolz!"

I hope you're not calling HQ a Mary-Sue. :-/

...OK. Except that Zatanna isn't Dini's creation, first of all.

And what? OK. So my basic understanding of a Mary-Sue is that it's a character that can do no wrong, everyone loves her, etc., etc. And you're equating Harley Quinn to that? Is that what I'm getting?

....Ooookay. Except that she has some major, major flaws. And isn't exactly liked by everyone.

Additionally, that feeling emerges from attempting to apply logic to Dini's fragmented idea of plotting.

More likely from the entirety of his run on Detective, Countdown, and what we've seen of him in this pathetic replacement for BoP and that pathetic replacement for Gotham City Central. Oh, and that horrible cheesecake series of his I flipped through once whose name I could never remember.

I'm glad I live near a Library and didn't have to pay for his stuff.

Yeah, I have to admit this confused me a bit.

The Joker freaking out about Harley? He should either be in a depression caused by Batman's death or attempting to hunt down Batman's killer. (Who is already dead, obviously, but I doubt the Joker knows the exact details of his death.) When it comes to obsession, Batman trumps Harley any day in his mind.

This does not work. At all. (And that said, I actually really love Dini's work in general and resent the insult against him. He can be an excellent writer when writing Batman, Zatanna, the DCAU, etc.)

Yeah, well, it's always possible that this topic will be mentioned, but its lack of mention in the preview makes me suspect that it's not likely to have a major part in the issue as a whole. And it would take a prominent part to satisfy me. I'm just picky like that.
Doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the issue otherwise, though.

Don't take this as a personal insult, but you know how classic comics used to have slogans such as "Do Not Miss This One!" or "Find Out What Happens!", etc.? Basically the entirety of Dini's work could easily have an equivalent on the lines of "Nothing Important Will Happen".

At least now we are certain of who was to blame for the gigantic disregard to basic continuity during Countdown To Final Crisis.

Frankly, I don't give a damn about whether or not something important happens in a story; I just care about if the story interests me. In fact, I prefer stories that don't claim to be the "greatest, biggest story of all" because those get really, really old. I don't want to see the world changed, I just want to be amused for ten minutes.

Which probably explains why I like him and you don't.

I think we're using wildly different interpretations of the word 'important', and admittedly I'm using a rather wide definition. I don't always want a story to be huge and big and the greatest; but it should at least impress me in some way, be original or new, for me to think it worth spending my money on - and often, for it to be entertaining.

This isn't impressive, original or new. It's a rerun. It's the same old endless Joker-Harley story, and it is dull, dull, dull - and to add insult to injury, it obstinately pushes aside the continuity of other books to go "No, This Is What I'M Doing".

Never mind that Dini is one of the most sexist writers in DC.

This I do agree with to an extent, but I think that extent is me not being a fan of Joker and Harley. I know there are lots of people who are very excited about this story, whether it's a bit old or not. In general, I would say that I trust him to bring something new to the story, but I haven't been too impressed with his run on Gotham City Sirens, so this could very well suck.

All comic book writers do that everytime a retconn happens. For example, Morrison completely through Countdown to FC out the window while writing FC. Yes, Countdown sucked, but it was still a rude thing to do. So while Dini's neglect to address Joker's feelings about Batman's death really bothers me, I don't think it makes him evil.

Never mind that Dini is one of the most sexist writers in DC.
Scans or it didn't happen. I've never noted anything particularly sexist in any of the books I've read by him. (The word "particularly" was used, because comic books in general tend to be a little sexist.) If you're going to throw that accusation out there, you're going to have to prove it to me.

Where are you getting THAT from? Maybe you should give some sources before throwing out the accusations, esp. one like that.

And especially since Dini has written some very amazing women and created some; in part giving us Renee Montoya as well.
