Game 129
Who: Everyone
Where: The Arena
When: Day 211, early evening
What:

[The Call to the Arena today is the simple sound of hammer on metal. Rhythmic, tireless it's almost a marching tune to those who happened to hear and follow it.

When you enter the Arena bare land quickly gives way to hot winds and an uphill slope of loose, fine sand. Your upward trudge isn't easy, with sand being the horrible, contrary thing it is when you're intent on getting ANYWHERE.

As you top the dune, you see a giant statue sitting on the thrones, leaning forward on his elbows and with a huge, jovial grin. At his feet, there is a large, spanning lake with a tropical island in the center... between you and the lake though, there are eight paths.]

HA! WARMED UP, KIDDOES?

I have experienced difficulties corresponding with several others of your kind. Why is it that you do not present similar difficulties?

Because you're communicating mentally, and I'm used to doing the same.

*raises one arm, tapping his bracer*

These bracers, in addition to their other functions, ward the wearer against any kind of telepathic effect. That ward prevents the kind of communication you're using. I should mention that one of those other functions is to stabilize the formation of your long-term memories, so taking it off would be a bad idea.

[nerve cords thrash momentarily]

Why, then, does it allow us to communicate?

The defense is voluntary, but total. There are people who aren't used to telepathy, or value the privacy of their mind highly, and can't ensure it without the bracer ward; others of us are used to it and leave theirs down. The former reaction can be inconvenient, but in a lot of cases there are good reasons for it, and they should be respected.

Do you know if you can write?

[The Protoss is still for a moment, considering, before moving out of the water far enough to crouch and trace several pictographs in the sand.]

I believe so.

["This method of communication is inefficient." For a moment there's a slight sense of probing.]

What is your opinion?

*it's neatly deflected, almost automatically*

I don't recognize the system; most other people won't, either. But I can implant the basics of the common one here, if you don't object. At least that way you can communicate with anyone.

[a hint of suspicion comes with this next thought]

We are from opposing units. It would be foolish to agree quickly to allowing you to meddle in my mind.

*this message is mildly dry*

I'll give you my word that I'll only do what I've told you I intend. Your teammates have endorsed the idea, if it helps; they know me.

To my knowledge, you have conducted yourself with honor to this point. If you claim the other members of my unit support this act, then I am more inclined to allow it.

*nods*

I've talked to Rory; we've arranged a trade, so as not to run afoul of some of the rules in place. I can do it now, if you're willing.

I'll transfer the knowledge telepathically; effectively, I'll drop it directly into the part of your mind that processes language.

Is there any risk involved in the procedure?

None in particular.
