Had no idea.

Brandon too. So, it's a Seattle reunion. We need something stronger than beer. Verily.

I think Brandon being here might be a quiet thing, but my boss knows, so it can't be that secret.

Amanda's with me. She showed up before Brandon did.

Did you ever meet McKendrick? Because he showed up too this week. Definitely need something stronger than beer.

Is this a new boss or have you returned to SHIELD?

That's good to hear. How is she? Might I see her?

I only vaguely recall him from Vegas. Forget the beer then. Let's break out the good stuff. And don't you dare bring me a goblet.

I'm at SHIELD. I don't know for how long, but it was there when I ended up here a few weeks ago, and I figured I would ride it until I figured out what I wanted to do. She's great, the boss. You'd like her.

Aye, you might. You're not getting jeans until she can see you in whatever finery thou art bedecked in.

We fucked. It's complicated. [...] Shit. I was already ordering a goblet on Amazon.

Oh? Is it Hill?

Now I'm saddened that I don't have something for her to don. Though really all I might have had for her was a sword, so perhaps it's for the best I came without all my finery.

You get the goblet. I wish for one of those helmets with alcohol in long straws.

Sharon Carter? She likes beers and burgers. I'm sold.

Well, fuck. I too am saddened.

[True to her word, once Gwen had an address she arrived in a cab and all the finery that she left her previous door in. She wore red and gold, the latter mostly in embroidery, her necklace, and the occasional ring she wore. No crown, alas. Her hair fell past her waist, soft plaits pulling her tresses from her face and allowing the rest to fall down her back in waves. She was quite the spectacle, fabric billowing out with each step from her yellow cab, her fingers picking up her skirts so they wouldn’t completely drag on the concrete.

But it was Halloween. She at least had that in her favor, and a few passersby gawked for a few moments before they ignored her as she ignored them while she made her way to Max’s. Her friend, after all, still had to pay for the drive over. The coin purse Gwen still carried did little to help her here.]

[Max had been checking the window every few minutes, even though she knew cabbies well enough to expect this one to lay on the horn if he needed a fare. But still, she checked, because she was a good bro like that. It was on one of those checks that she saw the long stretch of red fabric on the sidewalk, and only Amanda's sleeping presence up in the loft kept Max from completely losing her shit at the balcony window.

But she pulled it together admirably, and she was waiting at the open door to the apartment in jeans and a faded grey sweatshirt with a Captain America logo on the front. She was holding up a twenty, and her grin was absolutely the definition of shit-eating.]

Do not. [Gwen gave her a look, a smile tugging her lips even as she tried to look menacing. She only half succeeded. Really, she was more glad 'verily' didn't slip from Max's grin.

Plucking the twenty from her friend she graciously handed it to the cabbie waiting outside his car. When he jokingly gave her a bow she tossed him a look and pained chuckle before gathering her skirts and heading towards Max.] At least wait until we're inside. [There was the slightest lilt, the barest hint of an accent but little more than that.]

[Max just chortled when Gwen told her not to do something that she was probably going to do anyway. She whistled - no catcalled, as Gwen turned and went back outside in that red and gold, and she was still grinning when Gwen returned with the edict that they at least wait until they were inside.]

Verily. [Yep. Had to. She closed the door behind her friend, and she didn't immediately motion to the jeans and shirt she'd set out for her. No, this was just too good.] Worry not. I'll keep our love confined to the apartment-eth.

[Hey, after the week she'd had, Gwen was like water to a parched man.]

[She scoffed at that β€˜verily’ but the grin was still warm when she turned to Max.] I should hope so. I look quite good in this bodice. I’d hate to ruin it while you ravish me like the rake that you are. [Lifting her arms and heavy sleeves up, she let Max get a good look at her getup, her gilded belt tinkling with the movement.] Let's hear it.

We should save that. It might come in handy if you're into roleplaying during sex. [She whistled again when Gwen lifted her arms, and she reached forward and tugged on the other woman's hip until she twirled in that fabric that went forever.] I want the belt. Might be kinky. [She grinned, and she walked to the kitchen and poured out two glasses - not goblets - of wine.] Clothes on the couch, and then you can tell me how shitty you had it.

Always sex. [This was nothing new with Max and Gwen was pleased at least that some good things never changed.] The novelty of lady and rogue is a touch worn for me. You can borrow the belt. I should have at least one shiny souvenir. Try not to stain it. [She waggled her brow before walking to the couch, gingerly lifting up the clothes as if she hadn’t seen jeans and a shirt in years.] It could’ve been worse, all things considered. The first few weeks were right shit, but I managed not to get my throat slit in my sleep or murdered by a passing bloodmage or monster. [Laying the clothes on her arm, she looked for a room to change.] How was everything here? Is Amanda here, before I start ruining this outfit.

Small pleasures. [She waggled a brow in indication that the double-entendre was completely intentional. She held a hand out for the belt, which she cinched around her hips, and then she watched with a smile on her face as Gwen held up the jeans like they were some foreign thing.] A bloodmage or monster. Alright, I need a full account of your time away. Change, and meet me out on the balcony with that wine. [When Gwen asked about Amanda, Max motioned toward the stairs to the loft.] She's sleeping. She'll just make you put it on again later. [Everything here, well, that earned Gwen a shrug.] I've been gone too. I just got back a few weeks ago.

[That got a mock pout.] Must they be small? [Two could play this entendre game. The belt slipped off easily and in Max’s hands it was heavy and sturdy. Not all actual gold, that would be too soft and but it was gilded nicely, an ornate present that Gwen rather liked.] She would, wouldn’t she? [Well at least Gwen was accustomed to dressing this outfit, and she sauntered to the other room to put on her new clothes. When she reemerged a few minutes later, the gown was left behind for a glass of wine instead. The start of silvered scar peeked out from under her right short sleeve but other than that, the hair, and a handful of years weathering her eyes and laugh lines, she looked much the same.] You first. Explaining the world and what a blood mage is would take a little longer. Where did you pop off to? [She awaited answers eagerly with a long sip of her wine.]

They must. [It was said with exaggerated propriety; Max was shit at propriety, and she nearly laughed when she said it. She swished largely non-existent hips (she'd always been thin and flat as a board), and she made the belt jangle).] I'll wear this next time I want to seduce someone. It's probably better at it than I am.

[Max waited for Gwen to return, and she took a sip of her own wine as Gwen asked her question. Before answering, she motioned to the balcony, bottle in hand, and she led her friend out into the cool New York night. She closed the balcony door behind her, in case a certain precocious seven-year-old was listening from the top of the stairs, which Max didn't put past her daughter at all. She sat heavily in one of the two lawn chairs, and she took a sip of her own generous glass of wine. The bottle was set on the floor between them, waiting.] I was here for five years. Dhaka, in prison, and then home. Back to New York for nearly two, and I have the crow's feet to prove it. [She motioned with the drink.] Now, you. Use spy terminology, and we'll be good. I'll get it.

Like you need help. [Gwen laughed and swatted the belt, adding an extra jingle to Max’s movements. Okay, it was a nice belt. But soon they were going outside and there were chairs and wine and she gracefully slid into one before snatching up the bottle and pouring more into her cup.] I was barely a spy and a terrible one, I’m sure. Namely thus, blood mages: mages who practice forbidden magic. The world wasn’t very kind to those born with magic so they were tightly controlled. On occasion you could meet a mage who wasn’t in their sanctioned homes. Or you would meet someone who was practicing unsanctioned magic. Sometimes both. Killing anyone who might know your secret is the easiest of solutions and I tended to… I started out having to run with the less than respectable crowds, shall we say. Stumbling on someone who might be in the midst of forbidden magic was relatively high. [She took a long sip and refilled before setting the bottle down.] Monsters were just that. Think some kind of mix between a zombie and a demon, except the zombies weren’t always human to begin with, so you had undead monsters who sometimes did magic. All very inconvenient. [A sip and a handwave.] At least some of the men were chivalrous. That was nice. [Another sip.] I’m sorry about Dhaka.

Namely thus. [It wasn't mocking this time; it was repetition. Max had known Gwen for a really long fucking time, and this was an entirely new way of talking, and she thought it was interesting, adorable, and kind of funny. She jingled her belt, and she took a drink from her glass, and she listened to the fantastic story that she almost couldn't get her head around.] I should've paid more attention when McKendrick was playing his video games. [It was offhand, but true. McKendrick loved that shit, and wherever Dailey had been stuck, she was fairly sure he was familiar. She waved off Dhaka. There was nothing to do but wave off Dhaka.] Are we traumatized? [Probably too blunt.] Darman? Brandon?

[She gave Max a look but it wasn't cutting. She knew she sounded odd. Every word from Max reminded her how she should sound, the rhythm that was the modern tongue, but it was still fresh to her ears. It would take a while and Gwen imagined there would be all these sly smiles at her words. She let it go.] It was hardly necessary to know the world. Granted, I made a small fortune by knowing it, but it wasn't as if I ran into the characters I was familiar with. [Another sip.] Traumatized? Perhaps early on but I've weathered it enough. [The city was proving louder than she recalled but she didn't look wary. She had also grown accustomed to not showing too many tells. She blamed the assassins.] I probably won't be letting go of my daggers anytime soon, though. Old habit, you know. I miss my bow already. [The two names garnered a shrug.] Roger is surprising but... well, I'm not unhappy seeing he's here. We didn't leave on terrible terms. Merely... Well, there were barely any terms laid out when we parted. Thomas is always a welcome face. [She smiled a little. She at least got along with the man though she knew Max and him were not always on such easy terms.] Though he hasn't yet given me a sign, so I don't believe I'm expected to have an opinion on his presence just yet.

So you knew this place? That helps. [She took another sip of her wine, and she considered Gwen's statement that she was traumatized at first.] Did it feel real? I have trouble with any of this feeling real. [She motioned at the very normal looking world outside her balcony.] I can't imagine being somewhere based on a video game. Did it still look like this? [She grinned at the mention of a bow.] You could be like that Hawkeye guy in the Avengers. I always thought the bow was impractical as a weapon. [She shrugged a shoulder, unapologetic. She liked guns.] Darman. It's been years. [She didn't ask how things ended, because Gwen's response made it pretty clear that 'not well' would apply here. Shit that faded out was something Max didn't have a whole lot of experience with, but it didn't sound like much fun.] Brandon's- I saw him a week ago, back in Vegas. Now, he's here, and he says he's been here for years. [She took another sip of wine. Brandon was different, and she'd let Dailey figure that out for herself.] So, plans?

I did. I knew more than what had already happened. I suspect that's why I managed to survive for so long. [Well, that was her being modest but it had helped.] It certainly felt real, and looked real enough. You know me. I barely go camping. Then suddenly I'm braving cold winters and sleeping hidden near bushes and traveling on horse for days on end. The reality can set in quite quick. It's better to, at least. You shed your worries faster. [She took a sip, and her smile barely hid behind the glass.] Crossbow for you. They were quite effective. [She nodded along. There wasn't much to do about Roger or Thomas, not yet.] Home. Clothes, though I might keep the hair. Shower. [A wry smile.] Then reacquaint myself with my computer. Possibly call upon Thomas. I did so once, I can find him again. Should I be turning my attention to anything in particular?
