Originally, she’d only planned to build one brace for him and had considered asking him to chip in for it too. Yet, seeing the condition he was actually in and knowing that part of his employment and benefits had been terminated she just couldn’t bring herself to ask, or really even consider asking. It was a shit position to be in. It was shit like this that made for desperate times and desperate people. It was shit like this that made good people do bad things just to get by. Dante had seen it plenty of times back in Brooklyn and many other parts of New York and The Capital. That was why she’d just make the braces and eat the cost. It wasn’t like she hadn’t been collecting various pieces of scrap metals and computer chips out of broken phones, cars and electronics for years anyway. Hell, after emptying out the storage unit where she’d kept all her working materials she’d fully equipped and decked out the entire workshop in the basement of her house. Years of picking up random materials paid off sometimes. For the last week, her life had been filled almost nothing outside of work. Dante had set the shop hours from 7am-7pm and then once everything was picked up and largely closed for the night she’d easily spend another three hours on Atticus’ car. With the complex build and constant reconsiderations to stability and furthering safety additions while still being mindful of style and color restoration it was hard to do much else. Now, that didn’t mean she wasn’t doing other things at the same time - data and research constantly ran through the back of her head, like a computer in a data processing warehouse, her brain was always pulling information from the internet and organizing and analyzing what it got - because there was still the matter of the job Inferno and Artemis had agreed to as well, and Dante wasn’t going into that mission without assuring the highest level of safety for them both that she could. It was a… Weird trick. One she’d figured out years ago that allowed her technopathy to soft jack-in to the internet and constantly stream information directly into the back of her mind that she could pick through later. Then with her memory? It made sense why Dante was probably capable of testing for multiple degrees and certifications in multiple science and mathematics fields. Hell, if her life had been different it was entirely possible she’d have multiple master’s degrees in chemistry, physics, biology, calculus, engineering, computer science, art history and whatever the fuck else by now. But life wasn’t different. This was the one she had. That was why after work, after Atticus car, after letting her brain run simulations and statistics and variables and problems, she’d set to working on Holly’s brace each night around 11pm. Being up at 5am to get ready and out to work meant she could only spare a couple hours a night on each brace. Thankfully, she’d had the design schematics in her head already from her own considerations around braces from years ago and the knowledge she’d gained over time, it was just drawing and building everything out. Two braces would be wrapped up and tucked into individual duffle bags. The first had been the cage she spoke to him about with its hydraulics that would support the movement and take pressure and weight off of the knee. She’d built in dials and elastics and tech to help read pressure applied to the knee, would inflate or deflate to add more stability to the knee structure itself and help hold the small bits of knee in place , and timers for notifications on when he needed to do stretches and any other piece of functionality or secondary support or reminders she could possibly think of that he could need. It wasn’t as smooth and slick as she generally liked her inventions to be, but it was highly - some might argue too much - functional and supportive of what he’d need. This brace would help to get him up and moving with the additional tech putting almost all of the pressure of his body weight on his high upper thigh and calf. He’d have some killer muscles on this side of his body by the time he’d be done with this brace. The second brace? It was built in a manner that it could be used with the cage - it looked much like a knee compression sleeve - by simply being worn underneath. However, when the second brace was turned on a small digital display would spring to life. Through compression materials, inflatable bladders, automation to the bladders to inflate and deflate, built in warmer function, timers, and whatever other bells and whistles she could manage to shove in while keeping the brace compact as possible. The best thing about the modern age was microchip technology on this front though and the thinner, slimmer brace? It was packed full of tech to do everything she could think of that he might need. There was even a simplistic AI system that would learn Holly’s movement habits - bad and good - and would attempt to adjust pressure, inflation and temperature to the brace automatically throughout the day after the initial learning phases the system would go through. Admittedly, the second brace was intended for use in conjunction with the first initially - needed to get the data in the system so that it could auto-adjust and support Holly moving forward - and then for solo use after Holly could easily and comfortably walk without the support of the larger cage. Here was hoping everything worked right. It should, she’d run the numbers time after time after time but… Who the fuck knew. That was why Dante would show up a week after their initial chat- around 8pm at night - carrying two duffel bags to Holly’s place ready to check if her work would pay off. |
