Deb can’t understand what keeps them coming in. It can’t be the food, which tastes like bacon grease, or the decor, which Vic sarcastically calls “shabby shit.” It’s been four weeks since she began working at the Liberty Diner, and Deb is fascinated by the assortment of men, mostly boys really, who come every day. She’s memorized all of the regulars’ names and favorite dishes, and some answered her nosy questions.
The jangle of the bell and the sound of Michael and Brian’s laughter interrupts her thoughts. “You boys want some lemon bars?”
“Nah, we just wanted to see you.” |

Justin attempted to clear his mind. What a joke. His brain was not hardwired to empty its thoughts. He tried instead to concentrate on some mundane fact – like the birthdates of all major Renaissance painters. Still no use. No matter how hard he tried, Justin couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that Brian was going to visit him tomorrow in New York for the first time. |

“I think the sun reflects off the sand or maybe the umbrella isn’t completely opaque.”
Brian reached over and grabbed Justin’s beer taking a swig.
“Do you want to go back inside?”
Justin eyed Brian’s arms and chest and smiled.

Streaks of color, bold and wide, appeared in front of him. Shapes formed stroke by stroke, drip by drip. Without moving his hand, he was able to control the contours and angles of some glorious invisible brush. It was a dream, he knew, but it was magical, and it was genius. He tried to wake himself and feed the overwhelming need to put this vision on a canvas. He knew it had to happen now before the images slipped away. He shook his head and squeezed his hands, but the colors and shapes only faded leaving Justin in total darkness. |
