Challenge #112: Kinnetik
Title: The Kinnetik Cookie Author: dottie_jane A/N: These 5 drabbles were inspired by the free cookies I received today at work as part of "Employee Appreciation day." I hope those weren't in lieu of a raise. Condoms: 5 to Blake
Cynthia liked the way Justin entered Kinnetik. It reminded her of the way her older brother would walk through the door of their parents’ home on one of his infrequent, yet triumphant, returns from college. Justin was a tad more loveable though. His looks and demeanor were so incongruous with those of the Kinnetik staff. He would flop down on the sofa across from her desk, say a quick hello, and give her a mischievous look that meant “are there cookies in the conference room?” If there were, Cynthia would raise her eyebrows and look towards the conference room door.
Once Cynthia gave the cookie signal, Justin would sneak off and a few moments later he would return with three cookies carefully wrapped in a napkin. He would gently deposit one cookie on a napkin at Cynthia’s desk. She didn’t have the heart to tell him that her diet was even stricter than Brian’s. After giving her a sweet smile and saying something nice about her clothing, Justin would then let himself into Brian’s office whether or not Brian was inside. If Brian actually ate the third cookie was a great mystery that the Kinnetik staff has yet to solve.
Cynthia also loved when Justin came by when Brian wasn’t around. Brian would come back from some meeting and start barking orders at Cynthia. If she was lucky, Ted would be there to take the brunt of Brian’s bossiness. Just as Brian would pass her desk, he’d notice the cookie and an indecipherable expression would flash across his face. He looked annoyed and pleased at once – an expression only Brian could pull off. Without fail, every time there was a cookie, Brian’s steps would speed up slightly and he would swing his office door open just a little too wide.
Once, during one of Justin and Brian’s many break-ups, there was a cookie on Cynthia’s desk. An intern gave it to her in an attempt to suck up. The look on Brian’s face when he saw that innocent little dessert broke Cynthia’s heart. She tried to surreptitiously hide the cookie with her hand as he asked her about his messages. Her efforts failed and Brian angrily stormed into his office and spent the rest of the afternoon biting everyone’s heads off. Cynthia made sure to be more serious about sticking to her diet, at least, until they got back together.
The next time a cookie appeared on Cynthia’s desk Justin had already been in New York for several months. She knew Brian and Justin were still in touch because Brian would try to wire money to Justin, but within 24 hours Justin would wire the money back to Brian. One day, Brian passed Cynthia’s desk, eyed the cookie, and gave her a look that said “diet, my ass.” Cynthia just lifted up her eyebrows and looked toward his office door. Brian, however, didn’t know the cookie signal and was completely unprepared for the ‘cookie’ waiting for him inside his office.
