Gus is only six, but he's already lost patience with the world. "They are too!" he screams, because he's right and Aiden W. is wrong, and if he yells loud enough maybe Aiden will stop being stupid. "Miss Allen! Gus says he's got two moms that are married!" Gus is going to kick some gravel from the playground at Aiden, but Miss Allen is coming over now so he decides not to. "Two girls can't be married," says Aiden stubbornly. "Aiden, you know there are many kinds of families..." Miss Allen begins. "No, they're not!" Aiden yells before stomping off.

When the deed's done, I go and pull him into my arms. The fish had only lasted a few weeks, but it had been long enough for Gus to get attached to him. "I miss Swimmy!" "I know, sweetie." I kiss his forehead gently. "But Swimmy's in a big ocean now, full of other fish like him." "He'll have friends?" "Lots of friends. But he'll always love you." |

“You're living there now?” I was sure someone would have at least mentioned Brian moving but no one had. I'd spoke to Gus after he visited Brian last week. I was sure that he said he stayed overnight at the loft.
Brian remolded the house and then he sold it!
“No,” he said, pulling me against him.
“Why not?”
He whispered into my ear, “'Cause it was your wedding gift.”
