Challenge #197: Weddings and Funerals
Title: Grace Period
Author: britin1729
Condoms: 2 to Weddings
Gus is only six, but he's already lost patience with the world.
"They are too!" he screams, because he's right and Aiden W. is wrong, and if he yells loud enough maybe Aiden will stop being stupid.
"Miss Allen! Gus says he's got two moms that are married!"
Gus is going to kick some gravel from the playground at Aiden, but Miss Allen is coming over now so he decides not to.
"Two girls can't be married," says Aiden stubbornly.
"Aiden, you know there are many kinds of families..." Miss Allen begins.
"No, they're not!" Aiden yells before stomping off.
~
"Mommy? Are you and Mama married for real?"
The question surprises me, but then...it doesn't. I've known this day was coming since he started Kindergarten. Knew that eventually it would get around that Gus had two mommies. Knew he would question it.
"Yes," I answer simply.
"Aiden W. says two girls can't be married."
I'm not ready to have this talk, about fear and hatred and all the ugliness in the world. "Sometimes people don't get that two girls or two boys can love each other, the same way a boy and a girl can love each other," I say.
"But in this family, we know that it's okay for that to happen. We all love each other, and that's what's important."
He thinks this over and eats his pancakes.
"My friend Danny says boys can only have crushes on girls," he says after a moment.
"They can, sometimes. But boys can like other boys, too."
"Like Daddy and Justin?"
"Yeah, like Daddy and Justin."
"Okay," he says, and just like that, the subject is dropped. I let out a sigh of relief.
When Mel gets home, I kiss her softly and tell her that our grace period is over.
