“Miss it?”
My eyes scoured the streets, images of times passed flittered through my mind.
I looked at Ben. My present, my future.
Memories of the past would always stay with me, be important to who I had become but the memories of now, the ones we make together were what I held on to because I never knew how many I would have.
“Have I told you lately that I love you?”
“Yes, but it’s always worth repeating.”
I kissed him, adding another memory to the vault I kept in my head. |

Michael cradled the dove to his chest. He had found it lying on Liberty Avenue.
The dove made a painful coo. Michael dropped his head, peering at it with sad, brown eyes. “Hang in there little fella’.”
Ben came out of their apartment. “Michael…? What’s wrong?”
Michael looked up. “The dove, Ben, its hurt.”
Ben glanced at the bird in Michael’s arms then back at him. “Michael…”
“Ben! What’re we going to do?”
Ben shook his head. Michael was too damn caring for his own good. He looked down again at the dove lying in his arms.

Liberty Avenue Farewell
Justin let out a quiet gasp as the limo turned onto Liberty Avenue, causing the others to gaze out their windows.
Hundreds of twinks, bears, leather daddies, and drag queens lined the street, decked out in their best and brightest. Some held hands, some wept openly as the cortège passed. Music roared out as the hearse passed the diner and the mourners turned into revelers.
“What are they doing?” Carl asked.
“Celebrating her life,” Brian replied.
“Look at all those guys,” Michael said. “A bit much, don’t you think, Brian?”
“This wasn’t my doing, Mikey. It’s Deb’s boys saying goodbye.”

Hunter watched the car cruise past and then speed up, disappearing from sight.
He sat down on the cold pavement. Another quiet night.
He wasn’t sure why he had chosen Liberty Avenue tonight, but something had drawn him here.
He stood as a car slowed, then stopped. He casually walked towards it, not waiting to appear too eager, but hoping he would be offered a warm bed and enough cash for a meal tomorrow.
He hesitated before jumping into the car, his eyes looking upwards, locking with blue ones staring back at him from an open window.

It was after four am. Babylon was closed and Justin was tired.
“Go home. I’ve got a couple of things to do. I’ll see you there.”
Justin nodded, slipped on his jacket and left. He was mostly sober by now, and as the cool air forced his hands into his pockets he smiled contentedly at the thought of burrowing under the duvet and sleeping until at least noon tomorrow.
A tall man bumping into him pulled him out of his reverie.
“Sorry” he murmured as he sidestepped to continue his route.
The man didn’t let him pass. “Not so fast.”

JR held tightly to Ben and Michael’s hands as they walked down Liberty Avenue.
Lights twinkled around them. Christmas decorations adorned the store windows.
“Daddy…Daddy.....look!!”
Michael scooped her into his arms.
“What honeybun?”
“Santa!”
“Where?”
“There Daddy!….Can’t you see him”
She grabbed hold of Michael’s hair, yanking his head around in her excitement.
“No”
“Dadddddddddddy…look!”
“Oh. I wonder why he is here.”
“Daddy you are so silly. Can I go and see him….please?”
“Why?”
“So I can tell him allllllllllllll the things I want for Christmas”
Ben grinned at Michael.
“I think it’s going to be a expensive Christmas baby” |
