Michael cradled the dove to his chest. He had found it lying on Liberty Avenue.

The dove made a painful coo. Michael dropped his head, peering at it with sad, brown eyes. “Hang in there little fella’.”

Ben came out of their apartment. “Michael…? What’s wrong?”

Michael looked up. “The dove, Ben, its hurt.”

Ben glanced at the bird in Michael’s arms then back at him. “Michael…”

“Ben! What’re we going to do?”

Ben shook his head. Michael was too damn caring for his own good. He looked down again at the dove lying in his arms.

“I’m sorry baby.”
