I have so many things to be grateful for this year. I never thought I would see a time that's so open minded about people and lifestyle choices. I am grateful to live in this world, even if it took me away from mine.

So here it is.

I'm gay.

And I'm an alien.

I don't care who knows it anymore.

Supposedly I have a fiancee out there somewhere who can probably tell me more. I've never met her though.

I really hope my parents don't show up here. I miss them, I do. I shouldn't but I do.

Sometimes we get used to something, and no matter how bad it is, we still miss it when it's gone. I would say it's a human quality, but I think I'm gonna have to reassess the way I think about human nature.

Where are you from that you didn't know what aliens were?

Well, if I'm understanding all this correctly, then apparently I'm from the future. Earth's future. I live in a nation called Panem, which is pretty much what you call the United States now. Except, civilization as it exists now is a lot more advanced in a lot of ways than in the future, believe it or not.

The Capitol controls our lives. It controls what we do, what we eat, what we learn and what we know. History lessons in school date back only as far as the cataclysmic event that flooded the world and destroyed modern civilization as you know it. Eventually, Panem formed from the survivors, but apart from that not much is known about our past or what sort of knowledge we had about anything outside of our world. We only know what the Capitol tells us. Which is basically that we, the Districts, suck because we rebelled against the Capitol. It's why the Hunger Games were instilled.

Whoa. That's like majorly uncool. What are the Hunger Games?

A boy and a girl from all twelve districts are picked every year to fight each other to the death. There's only one winner. Or at least there used to be, until last year.

What? They make kids fight to the death?

That's exactly it. It's the most important event of the year, and everyone back home has to watch.

Me too. I mean, this place isn't as bad as the Capitol, right? I've heard some stories.
