Who: OPEN
What: Trouble on the home front.
Where: Pax Letale.
When: 9:13 p.m.
Warnings: TBD.
Notes: Feel free to have your characters go with the concierge or make their way down to the lobby of their own volition. The tower-dwelling critter won’t likely be noticed for a while yet. So mix and mingle - there’s more to come!
ETA: Our volunteers have been notified of the effect the demon will have on their characters. Expect strange things to be afoot in coming threads...

There had been nothing whatsoever to indicate something was amiss: no foul weather, no maintenance crews loitering about, no meddling kids or their damnable dogs. Everything had simply worked, and then, in the blinking of an eye, it suddenly did not. In the midst of a crisp, clear summer night, Pax Letale effectively shut down. All electricity ceased, the elevator stopping - as it often had - between floors five and six, lights, power, and emergency backup failing simultaneously. The concierge rummaged for the 30,000 candlepower Maglite stashed beneath the counter, loosely gripping the brushed metal handle with more annoyance than real concern. Slowly he began making his rounds, walking from floor to floor in an attempt to make contact with, and if need be round up, the tenants entrusted for the duration of his shift to his lax, distracted brand of care.

In the darkness of the tower something stirred. On silent steps it padded to the door, slithering through the smallest of cracks on an ozone-scented wisp of smoke. It began its downward progress, forked tongue flicking at the air, seeking out the presences it knew lay just beneath its feet.

"It's not a too-mah," Fee said, the Ah-nold impression an automatic and immediate response to an obvious opening. Even so, the delivery was off and distracted. Fiona didn't know if she should be concerned about Karin smelling this ghost scent, but it definitely didn't feel like nothing. That it was happening just after the power had gone out only made her think that maybe Karin was picking up on something the rest of them were missing.

"I don't know, Kar," she said, giving her a squeeze. "Honestly, maybe I'm missing something. We are having a power outage; maybe some wiring was faulty and they have some kind of super advanced shutdown technology or something."

Fiona frowned. The story seemed implausible enough to her, but she couldn't think of anything better; it wasn't exactly her field of expertise.

"Are you feeling all right at least? No headache or anything?" She squinted a little. Karin was not above self-neglect, despite being just about the most nurturing human being on the planet.

Karin shook her head, disliking intensely the idea that something else might be awry. She latched on to the combined explanations of faulty wiring and her own hurried awakening, telling herself the scent would fade with time; as they entered the lobby she realized no others appeared to smell it, did not sense the underlying wrongness the smell stirred in her. Indeed, they seemed utterly normal, if a bit put out. She sidled a bit closer to her sister, finding her a remarkably centering presence in the midst of these strangers.

"Fine otherwise," she muttered. "I'm sure it's nothing. I hope they get this fixed soon, though. I didn't plan to spend the night playing icebreaker games in the lobby with my neighbors."

"Oh, God, fuck that," Fiona laughed, linking her arm through Karin's and taking her hand, interlacing their fingers and squeezing, like when they were younger. It was weird to see Karin unsettled. While Fiona knew better than to think her sister was unshakable, she also knew her well enough to know that shaking didn't happen easily. Even so, Fee was no Karin, and if she said she was OK, and there was nothing else to indicate she wasn't, she wasn't going to harp at her. Maybe keep a closer eye on her. Yeah, that. But she wasn't going to go all henhouse and start insisting Karin see a doctor or something. Hell, she'd see one on her next shift at work.

Even so, she did squeeze her hand a little tighter.

"If they start playing icebreakers, we're gonna go find the closest, cheapest bar and hang out there till the lights go back on," Fiona declared, looking around the lobby. It looked like a motley enough crew, at least from here in the dark. Fiona didn't recognize anybody, but that was no surprise; she'd moved in fairly recently and hadn't really spent much time wandering around the building since she had.

"This is fuckin' creepy," she said, then laughed. "Christ, Kar, what kind of luxury building is this?"

"The kind with a quick maintenance crew, I hope," she said, muttering darkly. She took up a post on a fairly empty wall, paying closer attention to the other tenants than perhaps was required. The longer she looked, the more appealing Fiona's suggestion struck her; she began to see leaving as not just a relief, but an escape, freeing her from an oppressive and rapidly growing sense of discomfort. But she fought all this down, covering herself in a thin veneer of normalcy if only for her sister's sake.

"Do you know any of these people?" she asked, her voice a stadium whisper. "I met someone running on the beach a while back, but I think he moved out. Now I'm kind of at a loss."

"Totally do not. I've been working pretty much constantly since I got here, and going to LA when I'm not doing that. I haven't even been grocery shopping. My kitchen is like a shitty vending machine with beer in it." Gladly, she stood next to her sister, her arm still through Karin's, paying as much attention to her sister as to the other residents mingling in the lobby. It wouldn't have taken much to convince Fiona to leave; she didn't put much stock in building security or the building itself at this point, and everything just felt creepy as it was.

"You met somebody on the beach?" she asked. "Was he hot?"

It wasn't the most appropriate question, but Karin wasn't usually one to maintain her love life enough to suit Fee's tastes, so it was up to her to bother her about it when possible.

Karin blinked, her lips parting as the question slowly sank in. She knew she should smile, should chuckle at her sister's good-natured needling, but the truth of the matter was Karin could not precisely recall. She had not seen him again after that strange meeting, and what had happened in the course of that supposedly innocuous run had driven out all thought of attraction or lust. He had grabbed her, that much she could remember; he had called her back to shore with a rolling, thick accent whose cadence she could only just recall. But it was the light that came to mind, flooding her memory, blinding her to the face whose details now escaped her. His silhouette was a grey shadow, fading into the blinding brilliance hidden away on an island ever out of reach. Her tongue slipped out, tracing her parted lips - hungry, feral.

"He was interesting," she said. Her tone was flat, distracted, a flimsy attempt to appease her sister into considering the topic exhausted. She quirked a weak smile, her glassy gaze flicking back to Fee's. "Maybe more interesting than any of these people, anyway," she smirked, one slender hand lifting to indicate the entirety of the lobby. "But why are you so curious?" She arched a brow, her smirk softening a bit. "I don't have his number to give you, so you're shit out of luck."

The initial silence that greeted her question had Fee watching Karin carefully, wondering now about why this place was so weird that meeting some guy on the beach had her sister looking...

Well, she didn't know what. Predatory? Not really. Maybe? But something. Whatever it was, it was past unusual into the territory of "weird," and Fiona was suddenly overtaken by a strange sense of foreboding.

Even so, when Karin finally replied, Fee's laugh was like the rest of her personality - unexpectedly large coming from someone so slight. She was unabashed about it, and reached out to push her sister lightly by the shoulder.

"Not for me, dumbass," she said as her laugh subsided into a chuckle. "For you. I haven't even seen you look at a dude since that cowboy back in East HolyFuckWhereAmI, Texas."

She sobered just as quickly, though, sliding her arm once again through her sister's sand asking, "C'mon now, though. What the hell is the deal here? You just looked like you were about to go all Inception on me or something. Is there something I oughta know about?"

Karin blushed, the bright stain of embarrassment flooding her cheeks at the mention of that long and deliberately forgotten memory. Her walk of shame had faded only with difficulty, pushed into oblivion by slow and careful degrees, recalled only in rare moments of perfect solitude and silence. Hers was a lonely road, she had long ago determined; she would not allow herself the luxury of self pitying nostalgia. She tried to focus on her sister's questions, fabricating an answer that would hopefully satisfy her curiosity.

"I don't know," she said. It was frustrating: Her breath failed her, the words passing her lips on a weak gust of air. "Something happened that day, like today. It's just..." She raked a hand through her hair, tangled locks catching on her thin fingers. "Strange. I feel like I know this place, but I know I shouldn't. That I don't. But that island. Fee..." She looked back to her sister, doing her best to hide the earnest concern lurking there. "There's something there, and I need to find out. Shae wouldn't go with me or I'd have found out then. But I feel like it's important, and I can't let it go."

She laughed, letting her hands fall easily to her sides once more, forcing some semblance of normalcy to her posture. "Nevermind," she said. "Don't worry about me. I just woke up weird, is all. It's probably just residual dreams or something."

Despite her sister's assurances, Fee knew better. An almost overwhelming sense of foreboding washed over her at Karin's words, her gestures, the awy she pulled her hand through her hair. The mention of the island seemed weird; the encounter with this mystery guy seemed weird. The whole thing stank of bigtime fucked up, and Fee had never been good at sticking to the bright side, even if it'd make someone feel better.

"Don't worry about you my ass. Checking out this island seems like a bad plan," she said. "Sounds creepy as shit."

Despite her baldly stated opinion, she slung her arm through her sister's once again. "But if I know you, you're probably not gonna be able to get shit done until you've checked it twice, so if you want, I'll go with you. There's gotta be boat rentals around here somewhere, right?"

As though to take the edge off her harshness, Fee threw her arms around Karin, squeezing her tight. "You and me, sis! We'll check it out. Maybe there'll be a haunted house run by a creepy old pedo, like on Scooby Doo!"

Again she waved off her sister's concern, this time with a literal gesture of her hand. She wished more than before she had not mentioned this, had not brought up even in passing the thing that now haunted her so.

Karin chuckled at that, something a bit more herself in the sound. "One who at least has the decency to monologue for fifteen minutes before actually attacking someone, I hope." She drew a deep breath, exhaling on a sigh. She stopped short at a wall a comforting distance from their neighbors, leaning against its cool, dark plane. She didn't speak again until she was certain no-one was listening, though some small, quiet voice of reason told her there was no need for such caution. "I already looked into renting a boat. Jetski. Anything, really." The arch in her brow indicated quite clearly what she thought of that. "As it turns out, the island is off limits. The Coast Guard is very diligent about picking up trespassers." She laughed again, giving her sister's arm a rushed little squeeze. "Not that that would deter you, of course."

Fee laughed at the image of a real Scooby Doo villain, the kind that believed in full disclosure, but followed Karin as she walked. She moved in close, sensing her sister's discomfort with the scene. Fiona's lips drew into a line as Karin revealed what she'd discovered. Just talking about it was giving her a bad feeling, and the fact that whoever owned that island had enough clout to have the Coast Guard busting people just made things all the more suspicious. Even so, at Karin's laugh and touch, Fee quirked a little grin and nodded firmly.

"Hell no it wouldn't," she said. "In fact, I say let's get the fuck over there and figure out what the hell is so shady. I mean hey, if it's just a private residence with filthy stinking rich douchebags doing douchebag things, that's fine. But then if it's just that, at least you'll get to see the show and have peace of mind at the same time, right?"

Karin gave a sad little smile, a shadow of its usual self. All the same, she put on a brave face, determined to hold a stoic line so long as her sister could see. It was easier to do so knowing the decision had been made, that this unknown island and its inexplicable pull would soon be explored - and, she hoped, put at last to rest. "If it's only that," she said, "I plan to enjoy their private beaches before heading home. Maybe see what's in one of those pool houses that's bigger than Mom and Dad's entire house."

She shifted her weight, her gaze darting restlessly about the still-filling room. "I'll email you my shift schedule. You'll let me know when you can go?"
