Karin shook her head, disliking intensely the idea that something else might be awry. She latched on to the combined explanations of faulty wiring and her own hurried awakening, telling herself the scent would fade with time; as they entered the lobby she realized no others appeared to smell it, did not sense the underlying wrongness the smell stirred in her. Indeed, they seemed utterly normal, if a bit put out. She sidled a bit closer to her sister, finding her a remarkably centering presence in the midst of these strangers.

"Fine otherwise," she muttered. "I'm sure it's nothing. I hope they get this fixed soon, though. I didn't plan to spend the night playing icebreaker games in the lobby with my neighbors."
