Who: Prudence & Ren
What: Pru starts up her Halloween decorations; she's dragging dead bodies stuff from her car to the elevator and up to the second floor.
Where: Lobby to 2nd floor
When: 10/27/10, a few hours after her forum post
Warnings: None that I can think of.

A humming resonated from Pru's white throat as she used one hip to slam closed her hand-me-down VW's door, her hands busy holding a fifth cardboard box of All Hallow's Eve decorations. Ear buds plugged into each side of her head fed her brain dark, soulful, and potentially slightly emo words by Diary of Dreams - the particular song was "Dead Letter", but Pru was a huge fan and knew the lyrics for all of the band's songs. Her lips moved wordlessly, following Adrian's voice with no hesitation, and she started back towards the apartment building in soundless shoes. She was dressed somewhat out there but nothing terribly shocking. Not that anything Prudence ever wore was shocking, not when one had seen her creations. Her keys jingled from the pocket of her jacket, but otherwise the world was drowned out by the synths and dramatic tunes dancing through her head.

The contents of the box, however, were not made by her hand. Instead, it was filled with somewhat cheesy decor - black and orange streamers, dancing skeletons, light-up spiders and plastic bats. Upstairs there were already a myriad of gravestones and spider webs, all sitting in a pile by her brand-new front door, the one with the numbers two-oh-nine stenciled on them so nicely. It wasn't the first time she'd lived away from home, but it was her first apartment, something she was very excited about. While she'd attended school, her mother had insisted on her staying in a dormitory. As though anything she could get up to would be impeded by the RAs (no, it'd just been encouraged as long as it had stayed under the radar). She found that she had thrived in such an environment (the socializing, not the pranks and other things they had gotten up to) and after she moved home once she'd graduated, she'd put down her foot quite firmly that once she found a steady job, she was moving out.

Somewhat to her surprise, her mother had given up little protest, perhaps having grown used to the idea that her only child was an adult. Of course, Mary had insisted on being able to visit, which was something Prudence couldn't begrudge her, though she still dreaded her mother's visits, whenever those were going to occur. But at present she was content to not worry about such a thing, instead focused on decorating the second floor for the last few days of October. It would be strange, living in a hall entirely on her own, but not necessarily unwelcome - she was perfectly fine with being on her own - but she had grown somewhat used to the idea that other people were living and breathing and doing whatever behind each door of her dormitory hallway. It had still seemed a ghost town from time to time, but the silence was always broken by the odd sputter of laughter, shriek, or muted thumping of someone's speakers turned up too loudly.

Pru reached the elevator after walking across the nice lobby of the building, hit the elevator with the knuckles of her right hand and readjusted the box. The stairs were always an option, but she didn't prefer lugging the semi-heavy object up the stairs when an elevator was perfectly usable. Doors slid open soundlessly, at least to Pru, and she stepped inside and hit the 2 until it glowed - the doors started closing, but were unable to complete their job as a hand thrust inwards to push them back open. Suddenly aware that she had completely missed someone asking her to hold the elevator, Pru shifted the box to between the wall and her hip and jabbed the OPEN DOORS button with the thumb of her left hand.

His first words were lost on her, just his mouth moving soundlessly while Adrian crooned, the music still blaring in her ears, though as soon as he was inside the elevator she hit the 2 again and popped one of the earbuds out. The doors dinged arrival and then slid closed again to start the journey upwards.

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear you," she started, swinging the free earbud in a semi-circle to denote the source of her deafness. A wan smile ghosted over her features, there and then gone though her face wasn't impassive nor stoic, simply blank, as she adjusted the box back to in front of her, her knees bent slightly to hold the weight and leaned back against the wall of the car for comfort, eyes watching the newcomer in a friendly sort of stare.

"I'm Prudence, and yeah, moving in today, actually," she gave a nod towards the box to indicate its explanation. Her voice was light, speaking in slow intonations that seemed carefully drawn out, and her overall demeanor was entirely relaxed. "Second floor, so at least the trip's not too bad, but I wasn't about to carry the boxes up the stairs. You live here too? What floor are you on?" She shifted the box to the side again, hand held out to tap the correct button.

Ren hadn't noticed the ear buds in her ears at first. He shook his head. He should have known better. He did that all the time. It was a strategy one did to remain aloof while among a crowd. Of course it completely contradicted his personal goal to be more outgoing with people. He needed to be more social to become a well rounded person, or so TV psychiatrists seemed to say.

"It's alright. Don't worry about it." He watched at the earbud swung in her grasp, and then shook his head and blinked as he broke himself from getting stuck staring. Getting hypnotized in the elevator was probably not the best idea.

Ren tilted his head at her as she spoke. Was it him or did it seem like she was moving and speaking through molasses? A little slow and deliberate. As if she needed to make sure of what she said before she said it.

"Oh yeah. I moved in a little while ago. I live on the fourth floor." He pointed upward and then slid his hand into his hair, scratching the back of his head. The thought of moving in and using the stairwell reminded him of what Mirza, his neighbor, had done, and in heels no less. "The elevator makes it much easier. There is a dolly in the lobby if you need one. I can show you were it is."

"You must really like this holiday," He leaned over to peek inside the box. "Are you going to the Halloween party then? I'll be there dressed as a samurai. Not very original am I?" He smiled a little embarrassed at his admission. "At least I'm not going as a ninja though."

"Second floor for me. I think I'm completely alone there..." Not that she minded, and she hit the fourth floor button for him. She would enjoy the silence for as long as she had it, but when someone moved in she certainly wouldn't be miffed. It wasn't as though she owned the entire hallway...well, right now she did, what with all the decorations she was planning on putting up. She gave another smile at his offer of the dolly.

"That would've been smart, but this is the last box," she responded after her comment, as though it were an after thought, a note of apology in her voice. "Thanks for the offer. I haven't seen many people around, not even maintenance workers, so I've just been doing everything one box at a time." Which was her approach to most things, and it helped. A lot. "And Halloween is my favorite holiday. I mean, if you're going to put up decorations, might as well go all out, right?"

Her voice started picking up tempo a little, one side of her mouth quirked. Halloween was one of her favorite topics, and when she got excited, she got a little talkative. "Oh, I'm so excited for the party! If you want any help with creative twists for your costume, I'd be more than happy to help. I mean, I work as a prop designer...it's just freelance, right now, but I love doing costumes and all sorts of things. I'm going to be a zombie, at least, that'll be the starting point. There are just too many themes for zombies. Not to mention you can zombify any other costume...

"But there's nothing wrong with playing to your strengths," she finished, coming back again to the original topic. "Are you just going to swing by Spirit or are you making the costume yourself?"

"Alone? That's not good. Perhaps you'll get some neighbors soon? There always seems to be people moving in this building rather quickly." He slipped his hands inside of his pockets and smiled at her. "I have one neighbor myself. He's a pretty interesting guy. Hardly looks like a guy, really."

Ren smiled slightly at the mention of decorations and shook his head. "Nah, I don't think I'll put anything up. I like Halloween and all, but I'm kinda sick of room decor after what happened early in the month. This place is a little wacky. Somehow the whole place got done up. Each floor was different. There were a couple of floors that turned into forests, one that looked like a temple from Greece or Rome, a Japanese looking temple, and one that looked Egyptian..." He stopped and blushed a little as he looked at her again. "I would show you pictures, but they got messed up somehow on my iPod. I'm not crazy, and I wasn't the only person who saw it."

He sighed a little but looked a little heartened by the fact that she picked up tempo went talking to him about costume making. He was always impressed by people who talented enough to create things like that. He had good hands, but little patience when it came to mending or sewing.

"I already have my costume. I didn't make it. I'm not really good at things like that. I actually bought it on one of my last trips to Japan."

The topic of the building's metamorphosis intrigued her - at her college dorm, sure, they'd thrown up some decor on each floor, a few different themes, but not what it sounded like had been done here. And if Ren's reaction was anything to go by, well, everyone was a little taken aback by it.

But she jumped topics to him and Japan. "Wow, really? Are you from Japan? I mean, born there, not just that...yeah," she tongue twisted for a moment, trying to stay PC and not knowing if he would be insulted. Why would he? Why not? she mentally shot back at herself, and readjusted the box on her hip. "I've never been out of the country, myself. That's really neat that you're so...cultured," she added in, a smile breaking over her face on the last word. She had no idea if he was, but it seemed like an appropriate word. Weren't people who went to Europe and other countries supposed to be cultured? And then she switched topics again, to cover up any blunders she might have made. She was usually so much better at this social stuff.

"I believe you, about the floors. I heard a few rumors after I signed my lease - do you think it was some sort of stunt for Halloween?"

He nearly stepped back from her enthusiasm about his Japanese heritage. Growing it up in the American suburbs, it had hindered more often than not and had caused others to make assumptions about him that were probably fully based on stereotypes. Ren went to Japan a few times to visit his family that still lived there, but he hadn't really fit in that country's society either. His cousins thought he was kind of weird, but were happy to send their American (even though he didn't look American by their standards) cousin manga, DVDs, and hard to find toys.

"N-no." He held up his hands in a sort of defensive pose. "I was born in America. My parents are from Japan though. I'm actually from the Midwest. Not really all that cultured." He smiled a little to reassure her that her high opinion of him was completely wrong. Wait, isn't that what his father would do? Tell people to think less of him? That was the last thing he wanted to be, his father.

"I don't know what happened to the pictures though...unless the whole building was high on some sort of mass drug intake." He shook his head. He had used before, but he had never seen anything like what had been on every floor of the building. He remembered smells and the tastes of what had been as if it had been burned into his memory. If everything hadn't changed back, he would almost think he had fallen down the rabbit hole.

Her smile didn't dissipate at his explanation, instead choosing to take a friendlier route. Hey, at least he hadn't been rude about it, and that was all that Pru cared. He seemed a little nervous about discussing it, though, perhaps out of embarrassment or shyness she couldn't tell. No matter, though, as she continued on with the topic about the mutating floors.

"So you're saying I've moved into a building where the management routinely drugs people? Do they switch them around inside their lives for scientific study as well?" Her quip came from the movie Dark City, in the hopes of bringing him out of his shell a little. She could remember her own shyness, though he was ten times better than she'd been, and so far their stumbling conversation was getting along fairly well.

"If they do, I hope they make me a movie star. But they'd better get rid of my stage fright, first."

"I don't know." He shrugged and smiled back at her. He was just naturally awkward really, and any time he discussed himself it was a weird topic. He just figured he might be a better listener than sharer.

"If they do, it hardly seems legal. I know we have a cop in the building so that probably wouldn't go over well." He laughed a little at the movie reference. "It does kind of sound more like a Hollywood movie plot that anything that would actually happen in real life."

He smiled at her. "Is that why your here? To become a movie star?" There seemed to be so many people in the building with such a variety, but perhaps that was just how every place was. Everyone seemed to have some sort of dream whether they were working toward it or not.

"I don't really care about becoming a star. That would just be strange. I just want to make cartoons. So as long as the management doesn't screw that dream over with their experiments and whatever, I'm fine with it."

He nodded at her decorations. "Do you need help hanging those things?" Ren wasn't the tallest man, but he was still nearly six foot.

Prudence shook her head, implying negative.

"Hah, me, a movie star? No, that's all right." She shifted the box again, the weight feeling comfortable once more.

"Um, no, I mean, I work on movie sets, but not in front of the camera. I'm special effects," she replied, albeit it was more like explaining. The doors of the elevator opened with a ding, showing the second floor, and Pru stepped out with a smile at his question.

"Actually, that'd be great. I'm going to decorate the whole hallway, I think I've got enough for it," with that she walked down the hall to where she had at least five other boxes stacked up, along with a few bags of webbing and some headstones. Setting the box she was carrying with its brothers, she opened it in order to start unpacking the decorations but continued talking. "What kind of cartoons? Kids, adults, funny, political..."

"You work on movie sets but you don't want to be a movie star. Doesn't that kind of make you a minority among your peers?" Maybe Ren just assumed that most people who moved to California to work in Hollywood had dreams of stardom. He did. That's why he moved here. And now he works on one of the lowest rungs for Disney.

That was a depressing thought.

"Special effects? Like explosives." Whenever he thought of special effects in movies, he obviously had an idea based on action flicks. Though he was sure she did more than just explosives, but explosives are cool. Or if she worked on scifi movies, that would be even better. Ren was a total geek about those things.

"Have you worked on any recent movies that I might have heard about?"

He followed her out of the elevator on to the second floor. The last time he was here it had looked completely different, like a whole other world. He shook his head lightly to expel the image and to focus on helping Prudence out. He squatted down and helped her unpack the box and grinned at the stuff he found in there. "Any fake blood in here?"

He sighed a little bit at her question. "Ah, well...there's the problem. At this point I would probably do anything. Makes me feel like a sell out, but I've been working at Disney Land ever since I moved here. Personally I like comic book style work, but if Disney gave me a better job as a character designer then I would draw as many woodland creatures or unicorns as they wanted." He glanced up and smiled a little awkwardly at her.

"Where do you want the spiderwebs?"
