everybody's comin'; leave your body at the door
Who: EVERYONE.
What: The Pax Halloween Party, part one.
Where: Pax Letale apartment complex, rec room.
When: 7 p.m., Oct. 31.
Notes: Hi guys! Sorry this took so long to get up; things have been pretty crazy here. But here is the Halloween event! This is the first part, and should be treated like a regular event; please mark where and when your character can be found throughout the room. Please remember that your character must be wearing their Halloween mask provided to them at the beginning of the month in order to gain admission to the rec room party. This is crucial for the second part of the event. If there are two people in a thread, please ask permission before entering; if you have any questions, please contact the mods! Now on with the show!

Despite the general eeriness of the building at large, those who make their way downstairs to the Halloween party will find it decorated to entertain. The lobby's emptiness will have been filled by a set of bloody sticker footprints from the elevator leading toward the rec room, through the door of which lights and music blare into the hallway. Stephan is waiting outside the entry way, dressed to the nines like a bald Morticia Addams, his red nails clicking on a clipboard as he takes note of who's arrived and who hasn't. Those who aren't dressed appropriately—read: with their Pax-provided masks—will be denied entry until they go and retrieve said item. Upon entry, Stephan will make the remark that attendees are to enjoy themselves, and that a special guest of honor will arrive a few hours later.

Those who make it past the drag queen bouncer will find a rather ghoulishly delightful party inside. Orange and black streamers hang in wound loops from the walls, pinned carefully to the molding near the ceiling. Bats, cartoon cutouts of witches flying over a waning moon, black cats, and pumpkins all cover the walls from top to bottom; carved pumpkins are set on every available table space, lit and flickering in the low light. The doors to the pool area are open, a disco ball shining orange, black and white specks over everything as classic Halloween hits are played from a nearby boombox. The pool itself glows a ghostly green.

Back inside the rec room, a long table opposite the pool table is laden with hot dog finger treats, feet made of meatloaf, speared deviled eggs painted like eyeballs, and every other appropriately-themed Halloween food item an attendee could think of. In the middle of it all, amid black and orange plates and clear, orange-y cups, is a bowl filled generously with store-bought candy. On either side are punch bowls filled with green and red liquid; the former will taste like apple cider, the latter a regular tropical punch. Neither are alcoholic, but attendees are welcome to sneak their own into the party—Stephan's not watching that closely.

Overall, the party seems normal—too normal for some, though no one will find any mislaid bear traps, poisoned candy or razor-blade laden apples anywhere in the vicinity. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts....

Kate/OPEN - 8pm - pool area

The party seemed almost too cartoonish, too casual for Kate's current mood. When the building had changed again, Kate had kept her head down and just been glad it hadn't closed them in completely. But as the days wore on, something changed. The candles in the hallways almost became a comfort, and she imagined the flames grew as she passed. She began to hold her head up high again. She felt...confident. Powerful. More so than she ever had before. And she didn't bother to question it.

Which is why she now wore an exorbitantly expensive dress she had ordered especially to go with her mask, which didn't cover up her vision or her breathing like she had feared it might. The sense of empowerment increased when she had put both on, though the feeling had dimmed at the sight of kindergarten decorations and sound of cheesy Halloween songs as she glided confidently into the Pax rec room.

Instead of making her way to the refreshment table, her usual first stop, she stepped outside by the pool and leaned against the fence, looking up through her mask and losing herself in the stars shining in the distance.

James needed some air.

Also cartoonish was one fucking accurate way to describe this party, and he found that once he'd sampled the radioactive glowing punch (one spiked, one not - at least not since he last checked, someone could have dumped tequila in for all he knew) and the spoooooky finger foods, he was left with little to do. And with Nishka arguing with him about how he worked too much and didn't see her enough (he just got this bloody job, forgive him for wanting to keep it and make a good impression), well, that sort of cemented his need for space and all things outdoors.

He came across someone else, stargazing it seemed, and god's holy trousers - that dress. It was stunning, she was stunning. "I'm not much of an astronomer, but it's nice to be able to see them," he spoke about the stars, coming up beside his neighbour in his period ensemble he was calling a costume - the mask was mostly gold, touched with a light blue. He didn't think they'd met, but now was a good time to make new friends. "Without much city smog interfering for once."

Kate blinked her mind back down to Earth and turned to face the newcomer. She couldn't be sure, since everyone was wearing masks that obscured most of their faces, but this man didn't seem familiar. "Well, it is All Hallows' Eve. The one night of the year the veil between worlds is at its thinnest," she said, sounding quite comfortable with that fact.

She took in his outfit, which screamed pirate, but combined with that delicately filigreed mask..."Oberon?" she asked.

James had no idea this outfit would invoke pirate vibes, so he'd severely miscalculated that one. Then again, perhaps he should just accept he was terrible at picking out costumes - and on that note, accept that if he put the outfit together from pieces found at the thrift shoppe, it might not go as planned.

"Close," he quipped as he also moved to lean against the fence, but actually, Oberon and 'random Jane Austen character' were quite different. "I was sort of going for a general look from the nineteenth century. No one specific, I suppose."

The veil between worlds though, now that was intriguing. "Interesting how All Hallow's Eve became this," he added. "I mean, candy corn and feetloaf. I'm James, by the way. In 205."

Kate nodded. She hadn't dressed as anyone specific, either, after all, just followed an instinct to get the vibe she wanted. Mysterious, powerful, untouchable.

"I'm sure any holiday is the way it is now so someone can profit," she replied, wondering as she spoke where such cynicism was coming from. She shrugged. "Kate, D1. Nice to meet you. Have you been here long?"

"Indeed. Commercialism at its finest," James concurred. He recalled that in Dublin, many of the shoppes were decked out in red and white and Christmas themes in early November, with no Thanksgiving celebration to put off invoking the whole 'holiday' vibe (and the 'buy this gift' vibe). Even the churches were becoming dependent on tourism in the area. "St. Patrick's Day is the worst." It was actually almost disgusting to him, the way Irish culture was commercialised - he might have to go into a hidey hole this year and not come out until April.

And obviously he was talking to a classy lady who wouldn't drink green beer or wear shamrock shorts - and for that he was grateful. D1 too, that was some fancy shite. "A pleasure, Kate," he smiled warmly at her. "Not long at all. Just about two months or so. I moved across the country and just started a job as a psychiatrist, at the county hospital. So moving here's been a whirlwind." Not to mention their building was bonkershits. "And yourself?"

Kate raised an eyebrow when James mentioned St. Patrick's Day as the worst. It wasn't the first holiday she would have criticized, but as she thought more about it, she realized that it probably had originally been a religious holiday that was now so far removed from its founding she didn't even recognize it as an important day. Even Christmas still popularly held its religious significance underneath all the advertising.

She shook her head before she spiraled down that rabbit hole of thought too much further. "I've been here since the complex opened at the beginning of the year," she answered. "You've probably seen for yourself already, but the building can be...strange."

Strange, yes, strange was a way to put it. James felt like he'd lived here for eons, but it was merely weeks - perhaps having his body taken over by the Norse goddess which seemed to possess him just made time pass all the more quickly to him, or wore him down. Either one.

"Aye," he spoke on an exhale, agreeing with the fair lady's sentiment. Even behind the mask, the wariness of this party, the concierge, the whole aura of the building could be seen flickering in glacial eyes. "There's so much I don't understand, but I've got the feeling we're not supposed to be able to. At least not yet."

Or ever. Were they all simply experiments or something? He shuddered to think who was having a laugh over all this nonsense that had occurred as of late.

Kate could drink to that sentiment. "I keep wondering why I haven't just moved out. I suppose, deep down, I want to understand, despite the dangers." And despite the heartache her particular...gift..had caused her. If the recent confidence was at all connected to the building, she was willing to wait for an explanation. Thin veil, indeed.

"Shall we see what spooky food is on offer?" she asked, changing the subject abruptly and slowly starting toward the door to the rec room to see if James would follow. "You said you moved across the country. Was it the job that attracted you here?"

James related to the sentiment - he was a man of science himself, he needed to have explanations and facts. If he did not, and the answers were wide open (especially when it concerned his own well being, for fuck's sakes), then that sort of got him a bit prickly. "Well, I'm glad you stayed long enough for me to come across you, at least," he noted, following Kate's lead and pushing off the fence to head back into the rec room. He'd sampled a bit of the feetloaf, and the deviled eggs, but had yet to try anything sweet - maybe some candy would do him good.

"Ah, sort of - me moving here's a long story," he added, holding the door for her. Ladies first. "In general, I was looking to start over. A fresh start, I should say, after a period of when things were all topsy turvy. What about you? What do you do, Kate?" She appeared very quiet and calm. He might be a little surprised if she said she was a burlesque dancer (impressed, but surprised).

"Thank you," Kate said, stepping through the door James held open and making her way to the refreshment table. "I'm a law librarian at my family's firm. Other than a couple trips to Argentina, I haven't been anywhere else." She shrugged. "I guess I've just been content where I am."

She winced at the feetloaf and almost sent James an expression to say "Seriously?" before realizing he wouldn't be able to distinguish it behind her full face mask. Shaking her head instead, she placed several small items on her plate, skipping the feetloaf.

A wise decision, to skip the feetloaf. James poured himself another beverage, green again - she could probably smell the alcohol in the red concoction but he thought it fit to warn her anyway. "It's spiked," he nodded toward the bowl of petrol resembling punch. "Not sure with what though. But for something not laden with booze, the green stuff isn't bad."

In addition to that he stocked up on candy, just a couple of pieces, and also some of the hot dog things - hot dogs were something of a mystery to this Irish boy. "Argentina, hm - why there? Hablas Español?"

His Spanish accent was actually decent, considering he'd grown up speaking the language - Dublin was a multicultural sort of city, and he missed it quite a bit sometimes.

"Thanks for the warning." She placed her plate on a nearby table and poured herself some of the green liquid. "I'll save that one for after I've lined my stomach," she said, nodding to the spiked drink.

As she took a seat at the table, Kate smiled for the first time that night. "Un poquito," she said in response to his question. "Just enough to get around. It was offered as a study abroad program in undergrad, and since I hadn't been anywhere else before, Argentina was as good a place as any." Her smile widened as memories played across her thoughts. "I made great friends, and ate even better food."

James sat at the table too, settling in for a moment with his party snacks and drink refills. "Aye, the food's fantastic," he agreed. "I've never been to Argentina itself but there were a few great Argentinian restaurants in Dublin. Empanadas, lomitos, alfajores..." He was a big sucker for anything dulce de leche. And for South American fare in general.

This was actually the type of time he'd been expecting to have at the party tonight - low key and relaxed, just sitting around chatting and getting to know his neighbours (it was also that James wasn't the type who was big on wild get-togethers anyway). So he'd enjoy it while it lasted, because the uneasy feeling that had settled in his stomach dissipated, yet didn't go away entirely. Surely there was more to come.

[ooc: it could begin wrapping, maybe? unless you wanted to keep going!]
